The student and I read a short story about blind men and an elephant. He answered some comprehension questions about the story. We talked about story structure, beginning, middle, and end. Then we discussed and began summarizing the beginning, middle, and end of the story. His fluency is fine but his comprehension from reading and listening needs improvement to reach grade level. He has a great eagerness to learn. I suggested that his parents read bedtime stories together with him and talk about the stories to build comprehension.

The student and I read 20 pages of Interpreter of Maladies today. We continued to practice note taking and prediction strategies. These 20 pages brought us to the end of one short story and into the beginning of another. He wrote a summary of the short story we finished and said he would complete a 10-minute free write about it before our next session.

The student made good progress. We reviewed silent e with "a" words and moved on to other vowels and silent e. He seems to be understanding that a vowel says its name if there is a silent e at the end.

We worked on another one of the student's college entrance essays. His content is good, especially regarding specific points that he wants to make, but his organization suffers some. He is going to do free writing to generate a story for his next essay. He appears to be happy with the changes that we make.

I interviewed the student to become aware of his interests and attitude towards reading. Some of the things he finds difficult are "big" words. He did express his preference for reading to himself versus reading aloud. We worked on contractions (you'd) and also the use of prefixes (-un). We read a piece from a kumon worksheet as well as a few pages from the Diary of A Wimpy Kid. New vocabulary words: frolicking, unfortunately. He is very attentive and focused. Next session will include making flashcards for contractions and reviewing their meaning.

We started off by rereading a chapter of Give Me Liberty that the student was unsure about when reading on her own. After we summarized each page of that chapter to better understand, we continued reading a few more chapters. She also continued to work on her writing assignment for science. Next time she will finish the writing and continue reading Give Me Liberty and start her writing assignment for that.
