Session Summaries by Organic Chemistry Tutors

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Sundeep in Portland, OR
We followed up today with her new material after her exam. She exclaimed she got a 100 on her exam which was a great accomplishment. Today we covered some basic chemical principles such as finding moles and atoms. Also we went over some laws of chemistry such as law of multiple proportions and what they mean. Once again she is very intelligent and seemed very interested in things beyond her current class level.

The student is preparing to take her Honors Chemistry final tomorrow. We reviewed the concepts and problems that she had trouble with on her last exam and worked through practice problems. We covered stoichiometry, limiting reagent problems, percent composition, and acid-base reactions in depth. At the end of the session, she had a strong grasp on these concepts.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Houtaneh in Portland, OR
Today we did problems dealing with alkenes and alkynes--their synthesis and their use in reactions. She did much better than she thought she was. She knows all the pieces; now it's just about putting them together.

Organic Chemistry Tutoring review by Kevin in Portland, OR
Today's session focused on chapter 27, on pericyclic reactions, in preparation for the student's upcoming test. We focused on the concepts behind molecular orbital theory. He worked with determining the stereochemistry of the products of these reactions based on the mechanisms. He also worked on accurately modeling them to help him "see" how the various types of orbital rotation would effect the 3D geometry of the products.

The student and I had our last session--he will be taking his final exam in the morning. We worked on some more aldol condensation reactions, protecting group questions, oxidation/reduction reactions--filling in the 'holes' of the material we didn't quite cover this week. We went through a final exam that we found online that we worked through as well. He was a great student to have, we had a lot of fun together and it was great to see him improve dramatically in organic chemistry! I hope he ends up getting the B he wants and deserves! Best of luck to him for the rest of the semester!
