If you feel that you or your student could benefit from taking an Oklahoma City SSAT prep course, Varsity Tutors offers connections to a course worthy of your consideration. The SSAT is a standardized exam taken by students in grades 3-11 who plan to enroll in an independent or public school for the next school year. It would be silly for a third-grader and eleventh-grader to take the same test, so the SSAT is divided into Elementary (grades 3-4), Middle (5-7), and Upper (8-11) Levels to provide an appropriate challenge to all test-takers.
Few schools make admission decisions solely based on standardized test scores, but taking test prep seriously can still be the first step toward pursuing your academic goals. If you take an Oklahoma City SSAT class, you get a comprehensive breakdown of everything you need to know for the exam plus insight into test-taking strategies you can use on test day. Keep reading to learn more about how we may be able to help you.
What topics are generally covered in an Oklahoma City SSAT course?
All levels of the SSAT have the same five sections: Writing, Quantitative (or Math at the Elementary Level), Reading, Verbal, and Experimental. The Experimental section appears at the end of the exam and allows the SSAT to test out future questions. It's unscored, so there is no reason to worry about it during test prep. Here is a complete breakdown of the remaining sections.
The SSAT's Writing section assesses a test-taker's written communication skills, including spelling, grammar, organization, and punctuation. The Elementary Level SSAT gives children 15 minutes to compose a story about a picture that should include a beginning, middle, and end. The Middle Level SSAT allows 25 minutes to compose a response to one of the two creative writing prompts provided. Finally, the Upper Level SSAT also allows 25 minutes but presents a choice between a creative prompt and a more traditional essay. The SSAT essay is not scored, but instead submitted with a student's application to private or independent schools as a writing sample.
In the Quantitative section, Elementary Level test-takers have 30 minutes to answer 30 multiple-choice questions about topics such as subtraction, division, shapes, numbers, and fractions on this section of the SSAT. Older students take the Quantitative section in two separate parts, each containing 25 multiple-choice items that must be completed in half an hour. The questions center on grade-appropriate geometry, algebra, data analysis, and probability on the Middle and Upper Level exams. Calculators are strictly prohibited on all levels of the test.
In Reading, students taking the Elementary Level SSAT have 30 minutes to answer 28 passage-based questions, while the Middle and Upper Level SSATs contain 40 Reading questions over a testing session lasting 40 minutes. Students at all levels are expected to be able to identify the main idea, use context to define unfamiliar vocabulary words, and determine whether a given word is being used literally or figuratively. Older test-takers are also asked to infer information beyond what is directly stated and assess the merits of an argument.
Verbal
Young students taking the Elementary Level SSAT have 20 minutes to answer 30 multiple-choice items on this section, while older test-takers have half an hour to answer 60 items. Synonyms and analogies are the most common question types at all levels of the exam, and a working knowledge of roots, suffixes, and prefixes can help students guess what a word might mean if they don't know it.
What are some advantages of taking an Oklahoma City SSAT course?
Every Oklahoma City SSAT class we can link you to is taught by a knowledgeable instructor who understands how to share information with a class of students. If your student could express themselves more effectively in writing, they might review how to compose an effective outline to make it easier to organize their thoughts. Similarly, your student's instructor can teach valuable test-taking strategies that may help improve a student's self-confidence on the exam. For instance, there is no penalty for guessing on the Elementary Level SSAT, so children should respond to every question. However, both the Middle and Upper Level SSAT penalize students a point for every incorrect response, making a blank answer box preferable to answering incorrectly. As a result, guessing only makes sense if the chance of proving correct is worth the risk of potentially losing a point.
Each Oklahoma City SSAT class also takes place on a convenient online platform that affords students the ability to study from anywhere while still interacting with their instructor and peers in real time. You might not want your student to share their classroom with others, but doing so can be a good thing. If somebody comes up with a great test-taking tip such as reading the questions before the corresponding passage so that you know what you're looking for, everyone can benefit. Likewise, completing group assignments can encourage students to consider ideas that they never would have come up with on their own. Students can also explain concepts to each other to reinforce everybody's understanding of SSAT concepts.
Learning with multiple students means you also split the bill, making standardized test prep more affordable than many people realize. If your student could benefit from personalized attention to master a challenging concept, you can also arrange private study time with the teacher on an as-needed basis.
We also try to make attending courses as easy as we can. For example, there are both two-week and four-week courses to make it easier to find a fit for even the busiest student's schedule. We also launch new courses every week, so we're ready to get started whenever you are.

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a teacher. I believe that teaching is more than a job, more than a career; it is a calling. Making a difference in the lives of others is important to me. I can't think of another job that offers that opportunity as much as teaching. ... The first session would begin with me getting to know my student. I want to know what they enjoy doing, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and find something that we have in common. The commonality will give us something from which to build a relationship. After these things are accomplished, it will be time to get down to the business at hand - learning!
