What can a Milwaukee GRE class help me review?
The GRE is a wide-ranging exam that will measure the various skills and knowledge you've accrued throughout your academic career by testing you in three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. You may also encounter one of two unscored sections, Experimental or Research. The Experimental section, if present, will be embedded in either the Verbal or Quantitative Reasoning sections. The optional Research section would appear at the end of the GRE. On average, the test takes approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete. Let's break down the different sections of the exam to give you a better idea of what to expect.
The Verbal Reasoning section assesses your skills in understanding the meaning of individual words and sentences, summarizing passages, analyzing texts and drawing conclusions, evaluating arguments, and your ability to interpret meaning from context, among other things. You will answer three different types of question, including reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence. These questions might ask you to use incomplete information in a single sentence to choose the best answers for how it should be completed, decide the best answer for blank sections of short passages, and demonstrate your understanding of complex passages.
The Quantitative Reasoning portion of the GRE will assess your basic mathematical skills, understanding of elementary mathematical concepts, and your ability to reason quantitatively by modeling and solving problems using different quantitative methods. The questions in this section draw on high school mathematics and statistics. You will be tasked with answering questions posed in real-life settings, transposing word problems into mathematical models, and answering purely mathematical questions. For some of you, high school may have been a long time ago, meaning that it's important to brush up on your arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis skills in order to answer questions involving coordinate geometry, exponents, standard deviation, and functions.
The Analytical Writing section of the exam measures your ability to analyze textual passages by asking you to separately evaluate an argument and an issue. To succeed in this section you must express your ideas clearly, organize your supporting claims, present direct evidence to back up your stance, and logically organize the key elements of your essay to form a cogent response. Brushing up on your vocabulary and grammar can help lend decisive style and tone to your essay, and avoiding choppy or run-on sentences can help ensure that your writing flows naturally from point to point.
