What can Memphis SSAT prep help my student review?
The SSAT is a standardized exam used to measure the basic verbal, math, and reading skills students need to succeed in private and independent schools. The test gives an equitable means to assess and compare applicants, and your student will complete one of three separate levels of the test depending on his or her age. These levels are Elementary, Middle, and Upper. Students will not be permitted a calculator for the Quantitative section throughout any level of the exam. Students taking the Elementary Level exam are encouraged to guess, but students taking the Upper and Middle Level SSAT will receive a point for each correct answer and lose one-quarter of a point for an incorrect answer. However, there is no penalty for unanswered questions. Also, The Experimental and Writing Sample sections are unscored across all levels of the SSAT. Here we will take a more in-depth look at each level of the SSAT to give you a better idea of what your student will need to prepare for before test day.
The Upper Level is intended for students between eighth and 11th grade seeking admission to an independent high school the following year. The test includes a Writing Sample that asks students to provide a written response to one of two prompts. Next, the two Quantitative sections will cover topics such as algebra, data analysis and probability, coordinate and plane geometry, and number operations. After this section is the 40 question Reading portion of the test where they will be asked to read texts in order to identify main ideas, make inferences and predictions, determine the author's purpose, and evaluate opinions and arguments. Finally, the Verbal section is made up of 60 questions that will measure their fluency in English by testing them on concepts such as synonyms, analogies, word roots, and determining meaning from context.
The Middle Level SSAT is designed for students finishing fifth, sixth, or seventh grade and looking to attend an independent middle school the following school year. Students can expect to complete a Writing Sample that asks them to write a story based on one of two creative prompts provided to them. Next, they will encounter two Quantitative sections. These sections combine for a total of 50 questions and test them on subjects such as arithmetic, elementary algebra, and geometry. After that, students will complete a Reading section that measures their ability to interpret meaning from narrative and argumentative passages. Finally, the 60 question Verbal portion of the exam will measure their fluency in English as it pertains to synonyms, analogies, and parts of speech, among other things.
The Elementary Level SSAT is designed for third and fourth-grade students looking to apply to independent or private schools for the following year. In this level, your child will complete the Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, and Writing Sample sections mentioned above, but they will be designed to correspond with their age range and education level. This test is composed of 89 questions and must be completed within one hour and 50 minutes. Students taking the Elementary Level SSAT are encouraged to guess as wrong answers do not count against their total score.
How can Memphis SSAT prep help my student prepare?
Varsity Tutors recognizes that students learn in different ways and at different speeds. To provide maximum flexibility and accommodate student needs, we offer both online courses and private tutoring. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of each option.
Enrolling in a Memphis SSAT prep class is an excellent step toward diversifying a student's test review. Our online platform is intuitive and user-friendly. Students will be placed in a virtual classroom that they share with other peers, allowing them to strategize, troubleshoot, and work together in real time. All classes are led by a qualified instructor that has been thoroughly vetted by Varsity Tutors. This option also permits students to schedule one-on-one time with their instructor to work through tricky concepts or areas of opportunity that may require more individualized instruction. With new two- and four-week classes beginning weekly, students can jump in whenever their schedule permits.
Getting matched with a Memphis SSAT tutor provides students with personalized lessons tailored specifically to their academic needs. Working with a private mentor means that students don't have to wait for their needs to align with a classroom curriculum. Tutors can work to develop a study plan that focuses on a student's strengths, goals, and areas of opportunity. In order to accommodate scheduling conflicts, private mentors can meet either online or in-person to provide maximum flexibility.
How do I get my student connected to qualified Memphis SSAT prep?
While your student may have to take the SSAT on their own, there is no need for them to study alone. Whether they are just beginning their studies or beginning to feel fatigued, Memphis SSAT prep can help to invigorate their studies. Contact Varsity Tutors today to speak with an educational consultant who can help you determine which type of test prep will fit your student's needs.
