Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Devin in Hartford, CT
The student and I read two articles from a few days apart concerning a serious current event. The articles were about the same subject and it made the session more cohesive to have some repeat vocabulary as concept review. He is becoming better at recognizing certain grammar structures when he sees them to help his word for word translation, but because of limited practice time his vocabulary is still a struggle. However, for now we are accomplishing our primary goal of regular maintenance to stop the deterioration of his language skills.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Jessica in Hartford, CT
Today the student and I discussed the essay assignment that her teacher had given the class. We went through the various essay questions that her teacher had provided and she addressed a few that she thought she might like to write about. We brainstormed ideas for each of them and finally decided which one would probably be the best to write about. Because this essay prompt asks the student to choose three characters and compare their treatment by society based on gender roles, she decided on the characters that she would discuss in her essay and what she would address with each of them. We discussed the grading rubric that her teacher had provided and went over some stylistic elements to keep in mind for the essay. We also addressed how to "talk about the author more than the characters," as her teacher had instructed her class to do in their essays. We talked about next steps for the essay, which included gathering quotes to support her analysis of each character. Finally, I asked her to work on a draft of her essay for us to review together for our session on Thursday.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Adam in Hartford, CT
We covered general essay writing strategies and tips, including avoiding redundancy, utilizing the tools available in Microsoft Word advantageously (remember the synonym tool), sentence structure (including comma placement and quotation structure), and methods to bring down the word count to conform to assignment guidelines. We also worked on diction and word choice on a case by case basis (think gush of wind vs. gust of wind). Lastly we briefly examined the structure of the course and the resources that the student's teacher has made available. The student had a perfect attitude toward the material, remaining engaged and positive throughout the entire process. She asked questions when she needed to and made her own suggestions towards improving her own work. In our next lesson I will provide her with exercises designed to shed light on the specific grammatical errors that she tends to repeat. These exercises will deal primarily with comma placement/necessity, quotation structure, and sentence structure. Brief rundown of specific information acquired: Remember to keep an eye out for redundancy between sentences and to use the synonym tool where applicable. Remember to avoid editing issues like the inclusion of a space after the first quotation mark. Remember to use the internet to your advantage by google searching sentences and words that feel awkward. Remember the little test to determine whether it should be "and I" or "and me". She did an excellent job in our tutoring session and should be very happy with the Personal Essay that we worked on for her class.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Cheryl in Hartford, CT
During this session, the student worked on a summary of a reading passage, which was an Internet article. She identified new vocabulary and took notes. This was a part of a homework assignment. Afterwards, we practiced more with reading strategies, and she read a sample email passage from an AP practice book and wrote a response. This was also part of the homework.

We also talked about which verbs are irregular in each tense, when to use imperfect vs. preterite, when to use future vs. conditional, and when to use future perfect vs. conditional perfect.
