The student is reading a new book for class, so we went over the list of reading comprehension questions. He did a great job making inferences about what would come next (although sometimes he speculates really far ahead, with his great imagination taking over from the clues in the book!). We then did a worksheet on inferring what happens next, and seemed to tighten his focus by the end of it. I ended by letting him read from his book aloud for a few chapters.

We continued with imagery in Macbeth. We finished entering quotes and analyses for Acts 1 and 2. We edited the Google doc for formatting. For each quote, we talked about paraphrasing and imagery, and the student completed the entries in the imagery log. We did a bit of rewriting on some of her entries, but not much was needed. She shows good insight into the story. We talked about ways to locate images in the text consistently. Her work is due Friday, and between now and then she is going to finish finding and entering imagery from Acts 3 and 4. She is going to email me if she's having difficulty with a quote. She is also going to remember to put her name on the work she does!

The student learned study skills and time management techniques. The student was optimistic and prepared. The entire session we went over different techniques for note-taking, study skills, and pacing during studying. The student was assigned to practice the Cornell Note System to improve class notes; also to review study packet (where, when, for how long to study). One win is his eagerness to practice pacing during his study time.

We first went over the format of memos, especially in business, and walked through the process of crafting one. The student, I believe, is getting faster in his word retrieval. For the next session, I asked him to write a couple paragraphs for me -- one written in present and future tense, and the other in the past tense. From these we can evaluate his grammar and correct whatever areas need work.

Today, after our usual warm ups, the student tackled the section about point of view in narratives. This is something she is already familiar with, and the language used in the book was a bit below her level. I had a talk with her about how she will sometimes skip the instructions and jump to the last part of her writing assignments, and I hope it sticks with her. I assigned her week's homework and had her finish the questions I wrote for her re: A Tale of Two Cities. Hopefully she'll be done with The Prince and the Pauper by this Friday!
