This section contains 40 questions that you will have 35 minutes to complete.

The English section of the exam asks you to demonstrate your understanding of the structure, rules, and conventions of the English language. You must understand grammar, usage, punctuation, style, and the organization of ideas. Your ability to answer the questions in this section will demonstrate your knowledge of reading, writing, and understanding English. There are 75 questions in this section, and you will have 45 minutes to answer them.

During the Science section of the ACT, you must interpret, analyze, reason effectively, and solve problems. You will encounter questions that come from the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, and more. You will work with data that is presented in a number of different formats. You must understand the scientific method, scientific procedures, and how to design experiments. You will have 35 minutes to answer the 40 questions in this section.

The Writing section takes 40 minutes to complete, during which time you will respond to one writing prompt. In this section, you will read three pieces that address a particular topic or issue. You must write a piece of your own that states your perspective while engaging with the ideas in at least one of the other pieces. You will display your ability to organize your thoughts, compare and analyze other the work of other writers, and effective argumentation.
