Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Phoebe in Madison, WI
We focused on the math section today, using the math flashcards to practice a variety of skills that will show up on the test. The student has strong basic algebra skills and was able to calculate percentages easily since our practice a few days ago. She struggled a bit with more complicated algebraic expressions since she hasn't been exposed to them much at school, but was able to complete most problems with guidance. She was able to solve fraction problems independently, and she learned how to calculate the volume of various shapes. If she has time before the next session, she should focus on the reading practice test as we will look at that section tomorrow.

HSPT Tutoring review by Michael in Madison, WI
I found that the student had read two out of three of the literary selections I had left him with him during the previous session, and was working on the third. I pulled up a few definitions for unfamiliar vocabulary and made note of literary devices used by the author to make the text more convincing. I asked him to make a prediction based upon hints within the text. I shared with him my draft of an essay comparing and contrasting the various similarities and differences of the three texts, noting that he would soon be asked to do similar analyses and synthesis of multiple sources on a related topic. We spent the second hour practicing reading comprehension activities in his study guide. The only error was based upon failing to recognize an overarching generality as the main idea. He did well.

We worked on tutor-supplied placement exam practice test 2. The student had taken the test independently and scored it at 90%. We reviewed his errors and discussed problem solving and technical elements needed to answer the remaining questions correctly. He had written an admissions essay which we reviewed and discussed so that he could refine it for our next meeting.

HSPT Tutoring review by Naama in Madison, WI
Today we're continuing with math, after asking the student to look over some of the concepts in the textbook for refreshers. We focused today on the problem-solving section of mathematics, wherein a lot of the strategies are very helpful. It is both more straightforward and more time consuming than the quantitative section, so he performed quite well on it after covering the other session.

HSPT Tutoring review by Gabriella in Madison, WI
We finished reviewing math for the assessment exam. I covered Algebra, word problems, and Geometry. The student will do the practice problems for Geometry for Friday. He will also complete the practice exams, and we will review the Math answers together on Friday. We will also cover the diagnostic exam. He is weaker in the Math portion of the exam, so that is what we will focus on during our final session.

We continued working with the website to practice skills in reading comprehension, language, and vocabulary. We also took a few practice tests that the student received from another program he is participating in. This is to better prepare him for high school placement tests.
