How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test, or HSPT, is an assessment that is given by Catholic private schools twice a year, in the spring and fall. It measures students' skills in topics such as reading, math, and language. The results are used by the private schools to help make admissions decisions. If you are trying to get your child into a top Catholic private school, they will need to do well on this exam. Los Angeles, California, HSPT tutoring can assist your child in studying for the test. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with these skilled HSPT tutors.

The HSPT is given to students in eighth grade, and each question is worth one point; there is no penalty for incorrect answers. There are several versions of the exam in use. There are five main sections of the exam and several optional sections, including science, mechanical aptitude, and Catholic religion. Each extra section adds additional time. The main sections of the exam include language, which is 60 questions; math, which contains 64 questions, quantitative skills; which includes 52 questions; reading, which is 62 questions; and verbal skills, which consists of 60 questions. All of the questions in each section are in multiple-choice format. Each school can create their own custom section to the exam as well. Los Angeles HSPT tutoring can help your child prepare for all sections of this exam.

HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in Los Angeles, CA
We reviewed what we talked about last time. We went through the questions on the reading section and talked about strategies such as going back to the text to find the answers. Then we practiced on a few excerpts. We also talked about several math concepts (circumference, percentage, dividing fractions), which we touched on briefly when we went over the questions on the math portion. She remembered how to do most of them from that first walk through.

The student and I focused mainly on the Verbal Skills section, with particular attention on the logic skills problems. We practiced diagramming the first two statements so that she could better evaluate whether the third statement was true, false or uncertain. We also explored some traps to avoid with odd word out questions.

Since Reading Comprehension was the student's highest score, we spent this session on test-taking skills for that section. He did very well on the quizzes and drills I gave him, and should be able to get a high score on the actual test for that section.
