I had about 12 years teaching experience in middle school and college. One thing that I learned is that teach at student's level, not at my level. People easily forget how they learned when they were young, which cause the gap between a student and a tutor. For me, the most important thing of tutoring is to understand student's issue deeply and lead the student out of his/her mistaken perception of the course and himself/herself.

Recent GRE Subject Test in Mathematics Tutoring Session Notes
This session mostly focused on reviewing the work that the student did for homework. This consisted of three sections. First, we worked through questions from the sentence equivalent section, focusing on some vocabulary building techniques. Following this, we reviewed issues she had on absolute values and inequalities. These were minor on the whole and where they were repetitive, we were able to address the root problem very quickly. Finally, we had to spend some extra time on percentages, which I then reassigned. She really just needed a little reinforcement. I believe that things will progress better in this regard for our session on Friday.
We finished all of the math for the exam, specifically probability and normal distribution in this lesson. Then, we covered Reading Comprehension passages. We went over the different question types, how to spot wrong answers, and did a whole lot of practice.
The student and I had our first session of GRE tutoring. In this session, we covered the basic format of the tests. We then spent much of the session going over a variety of practice problems. He needs a lot of help going over the fundamentals of GRE math, though he seems very willing to learn. If he can apply that energy to preparing for the test, he will do well.
The student and I discussed a practice test she had taken and I pointed out some things she could do to raise her score. We then looked at a few practice questions to review our previous session. We spent most of the remainder of the session going over the geometry that is tested on the GRE, and looking at practice questions. Topics covered included circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, inscribed shapes, lines and angles, shaded regions, oddly shaped shapes, and the general strategy for all geometry questions (1. drawing any relevant figures that are either provided or described, 2. labeling all given information as well as information you can get using geometry rules and formulas, and 3. writing down and using useful formulas). I gave her some tips on how to practice what we were going over and also on how to study vocabulary effectively.
Covered several reading comprehension strategies and approaches to tone and supporting answer choices.
Reviewed in-depth figures and angles, especially triangles and special triangles.
Reviewed essay outlining and thesis development in providing essay structure.
Student was active and attentive, and performance was much improved from last session.
We began by surveying the analytical writing analytical writing section of the exam, focusing in useful structures around which the student could write his response. After using a couple sample questions we moved forward into the handful of verbal material he needed to cover before tomorrow, most of which was just rehashing text completion exercises from before. Once he got the hang of it he was doing great. We then spent the rest of our time discussing how to convert word problems into equations, so that he could answer them correctly. In our last moments, we covered very quickly the two or three topics we hadn't had time for beforehand that he felt he need to touch on before our session ended.
