Varsity Tutors can connect you with a Detroit ACT prep course that can assist high school students such as you with preparation for the ACT. The ACT is one of two standardized college admissions tests that are recognized on a national level. Most students, like the ones at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy or another high school, choose the ACT as their admissions test when applying for college. When you begin to apply for college, you will realize the ACT is an important test that you want to score well on. Your scores could impact your admission to the college of your choice. This is a high priority exam you are frequently required to take in order to further your education at a nationally accredited college or university.

Are the materials that are reviewed in my Detroit ACT course similar to what is on the ACT?

Yes. The five sections covered on the ACT are titled Math, Science, English, Reading, and an optional Writing section. The testing time for the required sections, minus the breaks, lasts just under three hours. If you choose to take the writing portion, you will have an additional 40 minutes. The questions are presented in essay and multiple-choice formats within each section. To further help you understand what is included on the ACT, your Detroit ACT course will break down each section, question type, and the materials covered within all five parts of the ACT.

Let's take a quick overview of the Math section of the ACT. You may only use approved calculators and supplies during the ACT. It would be wise to review all acceptable materials before your test date. There are 60 math-related questions in which you will have one hour to respond. The questions will test the math skills you have accumulated since beginning school and the level of difficulty ranges from basic math to more advanced equations and fractions. Use your time management skills to ensure you will have enough time to respond to all questions within this section of the exam.

As you delve into the Science portion of the ACT, you will be measured on your evaluation, reasoning, interpretive, and problem-solving skills. Some of the science subjects that you should review are biology, physics, chemistry, and Earth sciences. The time allotment for this section of the exam is 35 minutes for 40 questions. You might be asked to manipulate scientific data or display your knowledge of scientific experimentation and investigation.

When you begin the English section of the ACT, you will encounter multiple choice and passage-based questions. These questions were asked to specifically test the comprehension of your language skills and your writing abilities. Some concepts you should review are topic development, the standard conventions of English, and the cohesiveness within the written text. You will be given 45 minutes to answer 75 questions.

The Reading portion of the exam lasts 40 minutes and you will be responding to 40 questions that will test your reading comprehension skills. You will be asked to reply to multiple choice and passage-based question types that test skills that are common within first-year college curriculums. You must showcase your abilities to differentiate between fact and opinion, make relevant connections using multiple texts, and display a strong understanding of the word and phrase meanings.

As mentioned before, the ACT has an optional Writing section for those who choose to display their writing skills. If you choose to be tested in writing, you will be given one essay question in which you need to respond. As you are planning your reply, you will be asked to choose one of three provided responses and make a written connection between your response and the one you chose. This section of the exam will allow you to display your writing skills, your ability to organize your thoughts and showcase your critical reading skills.
