Varsity Tutors can help you reach for your language learning goals with convenient and comprehensive Denver Chinese lessons. Maybe you are a student at an area school, such as Cherry Creek High School, working through a second language course as part of your general education requirements or you are an undergraduate student seeking a bachelor's degree at the Colorado School of Mines. Perhaps you are seeking to learn Chinese to advance in your career or you simply love the language. Whatever your reason or current proficiency level, Denver Chinese lessons can offer you an effective way to practice and build your fluency.
Chinese is the most popular language in the world with over one billion native speakers. There are several different dialects in the Chinese language, including Mandarin (the most popular), Wu, Gan, and Xiang. There is no Chinese alphabet. Instead, written Chinese is made up of over 50,000 characters, with each symbol representing one syllable. These symbols give no indication of how the word is pronounced, so each must be memorized individually. While it may seem daunting to learn this language, there are benefits both in and outside of the professional sphere. Not only can a strong understanding of Chinese provide you with an advantage if you were to work in a business with international connections, but should you choose to travel for pleasure, you would have the ability to use your second language skills.
Whether you are starting out in your first class at George Washington High School or you are looking to challenge yourself with a minor in Chinese at the University of Denver, we can help by setting you up with two different types of Chinese lessons. Group classes and private tutoring each have their own unique benefits and you may even find that a combination of both is the best fit for your needs. Whichever option you choose, you can be sure that you will learn from a highly qualified and patient instructor.
What language skills could be reviewed during Denver Chinese lessons?
Chinese is considered to be one of the hardest languages to learn, and with the many different dialects and rules for this language, it is easy to see why. One of the first things to keep in mind while practicing this language is that it is a tonal language. Your tone changes the meaning of a word. There are four tones in Mandarin and up to nine in the other dialects. The four tones in Mandarin include flat, rising, falling then rising, and falling.
There are no articles, verb inflections, or plurals in Chinese. Whether a noun is singular or plural, it still retains the same form, which is very different from the English language, in which an -s is added to the end of plural nouns. Another tricky concept is the gendered pronouns that sound the same but have a different pronunciation. There are also alike sounding verbs, differentiating verbs, and learning pinyin, which is the system for translating Chinese characters to letters in the English alphabet based on their pronunciation.
A lack of practice is one of the biggest obstacles to learning a second language. When you enroll in Denver Chinese lessons, you have extra opportunities throughout your week to practice speaking, writing, and reading Chinese in a collaborative group setting. From a well-rounded and comprehensive lesson plan to group activities, discussions, and feedback from your experienced Chinese language instructor, these group classes are set up to give you multiple language learning benefits. Depending on the class proficiency level, your instructor may even choose to incorporate immersion teaching and lead the entire session in Chinese.
If you are looking to focus more on certain concepts of the language that you find challenging, maybe the custom lesson plans of a Denver Chinese tutor would be the better fit for you. The one-on-one attention from your instructor could allow them to learn your strengths and challenges and design a study session around your learning style. This individualized method is very beneficial to students that prefer to move at their own pace and try different techniques to remember new language skills.
How do the two types of Denver Chinese lesson options work?
It may seem overwhelming to make time for the effort that learning a second language can take, especially if you are already going to school or working full time, managing family life, or involved in extracurricular activities. However, we make it easy to fit a Denver Chinese lesson into any schedule, whether you are looking for evening lessons, weekend lessons, or even one to work into your lunch hour. New group sessions start monthly and they are offered at a variety of times. The group lessons are completely virtual, meaning you don't need to fit an extra commute into your busy day. In these interactive lessons, you will have the ability to take part in conversational practice and ask questions. If you would like some one-on-one time with your instructor, you can reserve time to go over any concepts you would like more clarification on.
If independent sessions with a Denver Chinese tutor are more what you are looking for, we can get you connected with an experienced private instructor. When you choose personal language sessions, you have the option between meeting your instructor online or in person. Online tutoring offers the convenience of setting up sessions wherever you are and when you have time. If you choose to work with your instructor online, you will meet them on our Live Learning Platform to use video chat and a virtual whiteboard to take part in your individualized sessions. If you would rather meet in person, you can arrange for your language learning sessions to be held at your home, at the library, or at another favorite study spot.
How do I get set up with Denver Chinese lessons?
Whether you would prefer group sessions, private instruction, or if you are unsure as to which would be the right fit for you, Varsity Tutors is happy to help. We can get you set up with a tutor quickly or get you enrolled in the group class that works best for your schedule and needs. Reach out to our educational consultants today for more information.

Throughout college and my two years as a math teacher, I found that there isn't one best teaching method. Instead, each student is unique and this reflects in their learning style. A good teacher will be able to change strategies to accommodate for differences in learning styles. I hope to be the best teacher that I can be by listening to my students and adjust my style of teaching to fit the student's needs.... I believe in teaching that is catered towards the individual. Tutoring on a one-to-one level allows the teacher to incorporate strategies that are best suited to the student's learning style.
