Recent CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I met for our first session. We reviewed his diagnostic test, which was a 17. We went over all of the English and Science, and we will do math and reading next session. I asked him to redo/review the Reading section for homework. He did well on figuring out the questions he had missed on the English. He is competent with grammar and usage, and he did well on the rhetoric questions. He did well on the review of the science section, but I will need to teach him strategies for approaching the different types of questions on the science test. Based on his level of math education, I believe he will do well on the math section. We will meet again on Friday of this week for our second session.
Session was very successful. Went over practice problems he didn't understand for his upcoming SSAT on July 25th. In addition went over some helpful strategies that could be useful while taking the math section including elimination, chart, diagram figures, and underline key words that are continuously used throughout the math word problems.
The student reviewed her English test that she took during our last session. She was required to, without a time limit, tell me why she got the ones wrong that she did. She did VERY well at this.
We began reading practice primarily to use the practice on the reading test to better her test in the science portion. She started testing passages using the CAPS strategy for fiction. We will practice more next session.
We went over the homework I had assigned to the student. He did very well on many of the sections. I was particularly impressed by his improvement in the essay section. I also had him do some practice verbal sections--having him take both a critical reading section and a writing section.
Today, the student and I spent most of the session going over the results of his first timed math section. We first looked over the two reading passages that I assigned him. These were also completed under time constraints. The main challenge is looking for the answer to the exact question. Reading the entire question is key and paying attention to the details- exactly what it is asking- is critical in finding the correct answer. Lots of the possible answer choices in the Reading portion, as well as the Math, are examples of close (but not correct responses). In the Math section, he performed strongly on the first 40-50 problems. He needs to review trigonometry and geometry. Overall, he is making good progress.
Today was the second session I spent with the student going through grammar rules for the SAT writing after first spending time going through his missed questions from 3 practice sections. The student is very focused on learning the grammar rules, because they are more concrete and easy to memorize than the Reading techniques. Again, the questions in the practice assignments that he missed were 80% vocabulary based- Word in Context, Tone/Mood questions, and of course the Sentence Completions. However, he did improve on his second Writing section after our last meeting.
