What can Charlotte SSAT prep cover?

The SSAT is a comprehensive assessment of the key skills your student should have in order to meet the expectations of a private or independent elementary, middle, or high school. There are three levels of this exam. The Experimental section for this exam is unscored. It is merely used to test potential questions for the future. Let's explore the differences between each level of the SSAT.

The Elementary Level SSAT is administered to third and fourth-grade students. It consists of the following sections: Quantitative/Math, Verbal, Reading, Writing Sample, and Experimental. In all, there are 89 questions your student must solve within an hour and 50 minutes. The Quantitative section has 30 questions with 30 minutes on the clock. It covers concepts such as addition, place value, measurements, division, and graph interpretation. The Verbal section focuses on your student's understanding of language and age-appropriate words. There are seven passages with a set of four questions on the Reading section of this test. Your student will need to read these carefully and identify parts of the passage such as the main idea, know the definition of certain words in context, and other information. Finally, the Writing sample tasks your student with writing a story based on a picture in 15 minutes. This allows your student to demonstrate their communication skills to potential schools.

The Middle and Upper Levels of the SSAT share a similar format with one another. These tests allow your student two hours and 50 minutes to complete six sections: the Writing Sample, Quantitative 1 and 2, Reading, Verbal, and Experimental. However, the content each one covers is different.

Let's explore the Middle Level SSAT first. This test is presented to students from 6th to 8th grade. The Writing prompt is timed at 25 minutes long. The test presents two creative prompts for your student, and they must pick one to base a story on. The two Quantitative sections are each 30 minutes long with 25 questions apiece. There are a variety of math skills it assesses, such as data analysis, probability, geometric shapes, and other concepts. The Reading section consists of 40 questions with a 40-minute timer. There will be several passages for your student to read. They will need to be able to evaluate arguments and opinions, identify the author's purpose, and otherwise interpret the narrative. Lastly, your student will face the Verbal section. There are 60 questions and your student has 30 minutes to solve them. This portion focuses on synonyms and analogies.

The Upper Level SSAT is a more advanced form of this exam, focusing on skills and concepts that your student has built upon as they progressed through their educational career. It is offered to students in 9th to 11th grade.
