The SAT is one of the largest college admissions tests in the country. Students at local high schools such as Fairview High School and Peak to Peak Charter School typically take it in their junior year so that they can take it again before high school graduation if they are not satisfied with their grade. Many students get test anxiety when thinking about such an important exam, but the right test prep can increase your self-confidence heading into the exam.

What subject areas can I review in Boulder SAT prep sessions?

There are three mandatory sections on the SAT: Mathematics, Reading, and Writing/Language. The Mathematics section is scored on a scale from 200-800, while the Reading and Writing/Language sections are combined into a single "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing" score on the same scale. These two numbers are then added together to produce a composite score from 400-1600. All of the sections that contribute to the composite score utilize a multiple-choice format.

In addition, the SAT has an optional Essay section scored on a scale from 6-24. This score is always reported separately from a test-taker's composite score. In all, the SAT lasts three hours without the Essay and three hours, 50 minutes with it. Here is a closer look at the types of material covered by each section:

Mathematics

The SAT's Mathematics section measures your problem-solving, analytical thinking, algebraic understanding, and knowledge of working with mathematical expressions. It is divided into two subsections, one of which allows the use of an approved calculator. The non-calculator section contains 15 multiple-choice questions and five grid-ins over a session lasting 25 minutes, and the calculator section contains 30 multiple-choice questions and eight grid-ins over 55 minutes. This brings the total testing time to 80 minutes to answer 58 questions.

Reading

The SAT's Reading section measures a test-taker's reading comprehension and reasoning skills. You will have 65 minutes to answer 52 questions about reading passages drawn from a variety of sources, including one literary passage (contemporary or classic), 1-2 passages from the United States of America's Founding documents or related materials, one passage about the social sciences (economics, sociology, psychology, etc.) and 2-3 passages about scientific topics such as biology, Earth science, chemistry, or physics. You may see charts, graphs, or other graphics on this section, but no math is required.

Writing and Language

The SAT's Writing and Language section concentrates on grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and other standard English language conventions. You are also expected to use context to figure out what unfamiliar words mean, ascertain relevance, and identify how to improve another author's claims. You have to answer 44 questions in 35 minutes on this section.

Essay

The SAT's Essay question requires an interpretation of another author's argument. How did they use evidence (facts and data), reasoning, and stylistic choices to make their case? You are scored on your analysis, grammar, organization, style, tone, and cohesion, among other considerations.

What are the benefits of each of the Boulder SAT prep options available to me?

As noted above, we can help you find a Boulder SAT prep class or a one-on-one instructor to help you pursue your academic potential. If you opt for a class, you'll study on a live virtual platform with an expert teacher and a handful of other students studying for the SAT. Varsity Tutors vets every instructor we work with, so your teacher will be a great communicator with a strong understanding of the SAT. Our online platform also facilitates real-time interactions, making it seem as though you are all in the same classroom when you could be miles apart!

You may scoff at the notion of sharing your instructor with other students, but many people find it advantageous. First of all, you can split the cost and get premium instruction for a fraction of the price of footing the entire bill yourself. You can also work with your classmates to create a collaborative learning environment that can help everyone develop a more comprehensive understanding of the material. For example, you might discuss how an author approached their argument for your written assignment as a group, and then create individual outlines. You can then share those outlines with the rest of the class and receive constructive feedback. You also have the right to book private study time with your teacher if you feel you could use some extra help.

Alternatively, working with a private Boulder SAT tutor allows you to learn at your own pace in an exclusive learning environment. Your private instructor will never leave a topic behind without your permission, allowing you to spend as much or as little time on each topic as you need to. Your private educator can also design sessions around your preferred learning style to improve your study efficiency.

Most importantly, we make both products as convenient for you as possible. We offer two and four-week class sessions, making it easier to find a fit for your schedule. We also launch new classes every week, so it's always a good time to start studying. Similarly, our proprietary Live Learning Platform allows you to meet with your private instructor anywhere with a solid internet connection for maximal convenience. You are also in complete control of when every session takes place to mitigate any scheduling conflicts.
