AP Chinese Tutoring FAQ

Enrolling in AP Chinese Language and Culture gives high school students the chance to undertake a challenging, fast-paced curriculum that is typically meant to parallel the experience of an introductory college-level course in Chinese. In addition, it allows students to gain valuable insight into China's rich and long cultural history, while learning the ins and outs of the language.

While Chinese is widely regarded as one of the toughest languages for English speakers to learn, a number of professional and academic opportunities could arise if you achieve proficiency in the language. Passing the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam with a great score will also allow you to earn college credits for introductory Chinese classes. This means that you could earn college credits before you even set foot on a university campus.

It requires a lot of time and dedication to become proficient in Chinese. Because of the language's difficult nature, AP Chinese can quickly take you from a seemingly manageable scenario to throwing you into a completely overwhelming situation. This is especially true in the midst of a busy junior or senior year schedule that takes away from your studying time.

One of the best ways that you can stay on top of your Chinese studies is to get help with your classwork by working with a private AP Chinese tutor. Varsity Tutors can help you find a dedicated and professional tutor who is skilled at teaching AP Chinese. By connecting with these tutors and engaging in one-on-one lessons, you will notice that AP Chinese tutoring can help you master both the course and the exam in a structured, stress-free manner. Many AP Chinese tutors are previous AP students themselves, and all of them have the linguistic knowledge and teaching acumen necessary to help you improve your understanding of the courses material.

We understand you are a unique student, and that the concepts and vocabulary that you find difficult are not necessarily the same as what other students find challenging. That is why our educational directors work carefully to help you select a tutor who is best suited to your particular academic profile, based on your goals in the class, your previous knowledge of Chinese, the aspects of the course that you have already mastered, and the content with which you struggle. Your individually selected tutor can then use this information to create a customized learning curriculum for you to follow during your AP Chinese tutoring sessions. Having a hard time remembering all those Chinese characters? Your tutor can share tried-and-true studying techniques to help you not just memorize new characters and vocabulary, but incorporate them into your work successfully.

If you find yourself to be confused by certain aspects of Chinese culture, especially if you are struggling to understand something covered in previous lessons, your tutor can help you develop a deeper understanding of concepts by associating them with topics and concepts that are familiar to you.

Wondering how to begin studying for the AP exam, and in what manner? Your tutor can help you organize and review your knowledge in an effective and efficient way, reducing your stress. He or she can even share test-taking strategies that are specific to each section of the AP Chinese exam, as well as provide you with practice material so you can know what you will be facing on test day. If the pace or rigor of your AP Chinese class feels overwhelming or the AP Chinese exam has you feeling apprehensive, call your local Varsity Tutors office now and ask for help finding a private tutor! You can choose to study together over the internet, or have your tutor meet you at any location that is convenient for you in person, or even face-to-face online through the Varsity Tutors live learning platform. Experienced AP Chinese tutors are available nationwide, and they are eager to help you achieve your best potential both in the classroom and on test day.

We practiced his Mandarin tone recognition, as it was a component of his quizzes that he was having difficulty with. He has shown tremendous improvement from when we first started working together, and is able to recognize the tones. However, he has a little trouble separating out the character pronunciations, and that leads to difficulty figuring out the correct tone mark. We will continue to work on this during our next session.

This week like always, we reviewed all the materials like always. The student has gotten so much better with pinyin and numbers. She can say them really fast now. The student has no accent with numbers and pinyin. I taught her more conversational Chinese. She's been doing very well!!

Student 1 and I reviewed his colors and action words; he has started to retain some vocabulary, and he can recognize it, though he has trouble recalling it on his own. Student 2 and I ran through his action routine, and then I had him do a short Q&A game using an imaginary fish (I also did this with student 1). In Mandarin, I asked him what the fish was doing, and then I had him respond in Mandarin as well. I also reviewed the terms for water and ice with both boys. Student 3 and I orally reviewed the "I like" construction and we went over the body parts and how to say "(body part) hurts."

Online AP Chinese Tutoring review by Edwin
Today, I briefly introduced myself to the student and discussed with him his goals in Mandarin, what he would like to achieve. Next, I briefly assessed his level in reading, speaking, and listening. I found the student to have a good foundation in Chinese though he admitted he has gone rusty as he had not practiced Mandarin in a while. We decided to start him on late-elementary, early middle school level material. I had him read through a few simple reading comprehension passages to work on his reading while teaching new vocabulary and pronunciation. I had him jot down words and phrases I thought would be useful. I had him summarize the passage in his own words in Mandarin using new vocabulary from the passage as often as possible. Finally, I showed him a short video to work on his reading. I gave him a reading passage with questions for homework and I will meet him tomorrow.

We started learning animals in Chinese in the topic of the Chinese zodiac (this is also an alternative way to tell age in Chinese culture by saying the animal). We covered 6 animal vocabulary words in this session, which enabled students to tell their own and close family's zodiac animals. We played a matching game to strengthen the new vocabulary. Apart from the animal content, 3 other colors were introduced today (also to practice "like/not like"). They also practice the new color vocabulary by one student saying a color while others picked the color accordingly (speaking and listening). I left a checklist of 4 major language points we covered in the recent sessions to encourage the students to think upon what had been learned (as a self-practice/evaluation) occasionally before the next session.
