If you're looking for an Ann Arbor SSAT course for your student, Varsity Tutors can help you get enrolled in the best SSAT course available. The SSAT, also known as a Secondary School Admissions Test, is a standardized test used by admissions offices of various private institutions and independent schools to assess the abilities and knowledge of prospective students. Although it is not the only consideration taken into account when looking at a student application, it does provide a fair way to assess and compare different applicants. With this in mind, it makes sense for your student to take advantage of every resource possible when preparing for this test so he or she can stand apart from the crowd. An Ann Arbor SSAT course can support your student with guided practice opportunities and help increase his or her confidence on test day. If you'd like to know more about how an SSAT course can benefit your student, please continue reading.
What skills and topics can be covered in an Ann Arbor SSAT course to help my student prepare for the SSAT?
The SSAT consists of three different sections: a Quantitative assessment, a Reading assessment, and a Verbal assessment. Additionally, your student will need to complete an experimental section and a writing sample; neither of these sections will receive a score. However, your student's writing sample will be sent to any school that receives the SSAT scores. Students of different ages and grade levels will be required to take a different level SSAT. The Elementary level SSAT is for third-grade and fourth-grade students applying to fourth grade or fifth grade at an independent or private school. The Middle-Level SSAT is for students finishing fifth through seventh grade who are trying to attend an independent school for the next school year. The Upper-Level SSAT is for students in the eighth through 11th grade who are looking to apply to an independent high school for the following school year. Each level assesses age-appropriate skills. Let's take a closer look at the skills your student should review for each SSAT level.
The Elementary-Level SSAT takes just under two hours and consists of 89 questions. The Quantitative section of this exam evaluates your child's knowledge of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Your student will also need to have mastered the concepts of place value and number order. The Verbal section will measure your student's concept of different types of analogies as well as age-appropriate vocabulary from different areas of study. The Reading section will present your child with seven passages in which your student must be able to identify the main idea and other information. The Writing sample at this level simply requires your student to write a story that is based on a provided picture and contains a beginning, middle, and end.
The Middle-Level SSAT takes almost 3 hours and has a total of 167 questions. There are two Quantitative sections at this level that assess your child's students ability to perform operations using variables as well as demonstrating knowledge of ratio and proportion. The Reading section requires your child to demonstrate his or her capacity to interpret meaning from narrative or argumentative passages. The Verbal section requires your students to showcase the ability to relate ideas and words to each other using logic as well as being able to determine the meaning of parts of speech from the context of a passage. For this level of the SSAT, your student will have 25 minutes to look at two different creative writing prompts and choose one for the basis of a story. Your student will be evaluated on their ability to organize a written piece with proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
The Upper-Level SSAT also takes just under three hours and has a total of 167 questions. At this level, there are two Quantitative sections that cover algebra, data analysis, and probability, coordinate and plane geometry, as well as number operations. The Reading section requires your student to make inferences and predictions based on a text as well as being able to understand and evaluate opinions and arguments. The Verbal section will assess your student's knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, Greek, and Latin prefixes and suffixes as well as word roots. Your student will also want to brush up on synonyms and analogies. At this level, the Writing sample provides you with two prompts, one creative and one traditional, and students must select one on which to base their essay. This is an assessment of persuasive writing techniques and being able to support a statement with examples.
Calculators are not allowed to be used during the Quantitative section at any level. At the Elementary level, there is no penalty for an incorrect answer so students should take a guess at every question. Students taking the Upper or Middle-Level SSAT will lose one-quarter of a point for incorrect answers and should only take educated guesses.
An Ann Arbor SSAT course can help your student review all of these skills and more in order to prepare to do his or her best on the SSAT.

Hi! I'm a writer and a visual artist born in South Africa and raised around the world. For the past year, I've taught and tutored students in SAT, ACT, and reading and writing enrichment in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I love reading, learning new things, and climbing rocks, and I travel whenever possible. The most important thing to me is movement: as long as I stay active, I'm happy.... Less is more. As a teacher, I aspire to let my students carry the weight of their instruction. The less I lecture, the more my students are figuring things out for themselves; and in the long run, that kind of information is more likely to stick.

I am a board-certified, licensed naturopathic doctor. Before becoming a doctor I spent several years tutoring and teaching. I have worked with students of all ages, from 3 year olds learning phonics to graduate students studying histology and physiology. I specialize in general sciences, medical sciences, reading comprehension, literary analysis, and composition. I love working with students of all ages and I love to teach.... I love teaching and I love working with kids. I understand that a good teacher needs to combine perception, patience, persistence, and respect. A gifted teacher discerns the uniqueness in each learner, and then tailors their lesson to that learner. I am able to recognize my students' learning needs, and I shape my language in a way that makes information more accessible and digestible. I believe passionately that education elevates both the student and the community, and I approach teaching with the seriousness and devotion that every learner deserves.
