If your student is getting ready to take the SSAT and you believe they would benefit from additional help, Varsity Tutors can help them get started with a Madison SSAT class that offers more review than they'd get on their own. The SSAT is a test offered to students who are applying to independent or private schools to test their Reading, Math, and Verbal skills. If your student is switching schools and seeking admission somewhere new, this test can make a difference in their acceptance depending on their score.
If you're concerned about your student getting nervous on test day or you want to know what the layout of the test looks like, a Madison SSAT prep course can provide the right solution. Students who choose this option get to work in an online environment with fellow classmates led by an expert instructor. SSAT courses from Varsity Tutors can help your student feel more confident in knowing what to expect come test day.
Your student's score on the SSAT can affect which school they get into. Private and independent schools can have serious competition, so knowing how to help them reach their full potential is important. The SSAT is offered at the elementary level from third to fifth grade, the middle level from fifth to seventh grade, and the upper level to eighth and eleventh grade. Although there's some difference between all the levels for students, there are common topics to review that can help them do their best toward achieving success.
What could a Madison SSAT class help my student review?
The test for the SSAT covers the following areas for Upper Level and Middle Level students: Writing, Quantitative 1, Reading, Verbal, Quantitative 2, and an Experimental section. The Elementary exam has Quantitative/Math, Verbal, Reading, Writing, and an Experimental section. A calculator is not allowed for the Quantitative section at any level. Students at the Elementary Level should guess if they are unsure of an answer since there are no penalties for guessing. All other students lose one-quarter of a point for incorrect answers.
Students at the Upper and Middle Level begin with the Writing portion, where they'll compose an essay that's either traditional or creative. This is not scored, but it is used by schools to determine their grasp of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and how they support their statements. They have 25 minutes to complete this section.
The Quantitative section has two parts for both levels. These include topics such as elementary algebra, geometry, probability, numbers, and operations, to name a few. Other topics Upper Level students deal with include properties of triangles and graphing problems. There are 25 questions for each section and 30 minutes to handle the separate sections.
Next is the Reading section, giving students 40 questions to answer in 40 minutes. Students will understand an author's tone and purpose, know how words are used, understand the importance of arguments and how opinions are evaluated in contrast, and figure out the difference between narration and argumentative purposes.
The last part is the Verbal section, which is 60 questions to answer in 30 minutes. Upper Level students are quizzed on synonyms and analogies, including antonyms and the roots of words. Middle Level students look at how to relate ideas to words and how to determine their meaning or part of a speech.
Elementary school students have a slightly different version of the test. There is a Quantitative/Math section, Verbal, Reading, a Writing sample, and Experimental questions.
The Quantitative section covers basic math, including geometry and algebra. It consists of 30 questions to be answered in 30 minutes.
The Verbal portion is 30 questions to answer in 30 minutes. Students need to know about vocabulary from various disciplines such as social science and technology, along with synonyms and relationships between words.
The Reading section is next, with 28 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. There are 7 passages that have four questions each. Here, it's important for students to demonstrate their ability to identify words in context, know meanings of words, and main ideas.
Writing comes last, giving students 15 minutes to answer one prompt. They should demonstrate proper spelling and grammar, along with writing a short story after seeing a picture prompt. The story should include a beginning, middle, and end.
How do Madison SSAT courses help my student prepare?
SSAT courses are offered in an online setting, allowing students to learn at home with the help of a qualified instructor. New Madison SSAT classes start on a weekly basis, allowing your student the option to choose two-week or four-week classes. If they have a busy schedule with school and outside activities, this arrangement can help you plan better.
After signing your student up for the Madison SSAT class, they will work in a live environment with their instructor and fellow students, just like an in-person classroom. This can give them the chance to talk about how to tackle the Verbal portion of the exam or how to organize their essay in a way that is quick yet effective for the Writing portion. If they need additional help, the instructor can provide one-on-one assistance. No matter if your student is struggling with a concept or just wants extra practice, every aspect of the SSAT course is focused on helping them do their best.

I find joy in helping students meet their educational needs and helping them succeed wherever their learning takes them. As Albert Einstein indicated, "Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think." To think about your thinking is the key to education and represents my goal as a tutor. You see, critical-thinking is the pathway to engaged learning.

If you choose me to be your tutor then you will definitely ace your test. I'm a great math tutor because I understand the material thoroughly, am patient, and know how to explain things. I attended Stuyvesant High School and the University of Chicago; I am currently studying Data Science with Johns Hopkins.... If you don't get it then I'm explaining it wrong.... Before the first session, I'd have them do a bunch of practice problems on the subject they want to be tutored in, and I'd look over their answers to see what they need help with. I'd also ask them which problems they guessed on or weren't totally sure of. We could start from there.
