The SAT is broken into three sections: Writing and Language, Math, and Reading. There is also an optional SAT Essay that you can complete. You will have three hours to complete the mandatory sections of the exam, with an extra 50 minutes allotted for the optional essay. The material covered by the SAT is wide-ranging, meaning that it is important to approach the exam with well developed subject knowledge and refined test-taking skills. In addition, knowing how to approach multiple-choice questions by isolating potential answers can help you work more efficiently during the duration of the exam. Here we will break down the different sections of the test to give you a better idea of the different topics you will face.

In the Math section, you will have 80 minutes to complete 58 questions that assess your algebraic skills, problem-solving and analytical skills, and your ability to understand and solve mathematical expressions. This portion of the exam is broken into two sections, one of which allows a calculator. You will be tasked with solving problems involving linear equations, using math skills to understand data and solve problems, and rewriting mathematical expressions by analyzing and manipulating the given expressions, among other things.

In the Writing and Language section, you will have 35 minutes to answer 44 multiple-choice questions based on written passages. Some passages presented will include tables, graphs, and charts, forcing you to be adaptable and fluent in different models of comprehension. This section will task you with critiquing evidence provided in arguments, analyzing words in context by assessing syntax, style or tone, and making editorial decisions to improve the provided passages, among other things. Strong fluency in written English communications will help you succeed in this portion of the test.

The Reading section will assess your command of analyzing evidence, your ability to evaluate meaning in passages, and your aptitude for utilizing context clues to understand words or phrases. You will be allowed 65 minutes to complete 52 questions. Text passages will come from a variety of sources, including the United States founding documents, world or contemporary literature, the social sciences, and the physical sciences. Your ability to understand the meaning of the passage provided, as well as drawing inferences and conclusions, will be integral to your success in this section.

The SAT Essay will ask you to read a passage and consider the author's use of evidence to support claims, the stylistic and persuasive elements employed, and the reasoning used to develop ideas and connect the claims and evidence. Your essay will assess the author's argument in a critical manner. You will have 50 minutes to complete your essay.
