Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Anatomy Tutoring review by John in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student and I covered two major topics in these sessions. The first of which involved quantum theory and quantum numbers, including scenarios in which what series of quantum numbers were valid and which were not. The next session, we applied the knowledge of quantum theory towards determining electron configurations for elements. This also led into discussion of periodic trends for elements in terms of atomic radii, ionization energy, and electron affinity. I think with a bit of practice that he will understand this trends based on the location of the elements on the periodic table in terms of periods and groups.

The student's test is tomorrow so we spent this session working through a study guide that her teacher had posted. Though the test covers a lot of material, she found out that the main focus is on immunology, the nervous system and endocrinology. She is definitely getting better at these topics, but she still needs to put in some work. She seemed familiar with everything we talked about, but wasn't able to answer most of the questions without looking up the answers either in her notes or in her book. I encouraged her to make tables in the style of her study guide so that she would have a tool to keep everything straight. The book made a table for hormones, and I suggested she make one for the cell types involved in immunology. I think she will do well on the test as long as she continues to focus on these more challenging chapters.

The student and I continued to study for her upcoming test in Developmental Biology. We focused on mRNA regulation and movement during Drosophila embryo development. We discussed the phenotypes of different knockouts and how those types of questions may be presented on the test. I gave her a study tactic to make a chronological chart of the lecture material, starting at fertilization and going through embryo development and the formation of different planes. I also helped her see what sort of questions the teacher will likely ask so that she can write her own questions to quiz herself.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Timothy in Raleigh-Durham, NC
Usually the student and I work on Calculus, but today was a nice change. We worked on Physics to help her prepare for a test focusing on momentum and kinetic energy and impulse. Sometimes it just took a little help to get her started on the problem, and once she started the rest was easy, especially the math. Physics is just an application of mathematics. Some of the equations used are new to her still but once she knows which one to use, the rest is effortless for her. For Calculus, we talked about critical points and how they can be used to know when a function is increasing or decreasing. Today was a good session, she worked hard and had plenty of questions ready.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Efrem in Raleigh-Durham, NC
We reviewed recent notes on redox equations and reviewed this week's homework, using the text and class notes. The student grasps the concepts quickly and translated the concepts to solving the homework questions. She received her most recent quiz, scoring 9/10 for an improved grade. Also, her 3Q grade was B-, so her improvement, since starting tutoring, is substantial. She will check the homework before submission to ensure that it reflects the most recent experiments and notes.

Anatomy Tutoring review by Frank in Raleigh-Durham, NC
The student needed help with Newton's Laws, and understanding the related concepts and equations pertaining to mass, weight, acceleration, and force. We went through the material on an exam he needed to re-take, many of the questions being of a conceptual concern and others pertained to using the formula F=ma, or finding an average acceleration from a given velocity and the time it took to achieve it. We also covered another algebra quiz which was more of manipulating the equations of lines into the form Ax+By=C, y=mx+b; also covered were finding points that are on a given line, by plugging 0 into the equation for x or y and solving for the remaining variable. Then that exam and the algebra quiz were both completed with passing scores.
