The ISEE consists of a Primary Level, Lower Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level. At each level, the exam is suited to the capacities of students at a particular age. The Primary Level features three exams (2, 3, and 4) which correspond to the grade the student is about to enter. The Lower Level is for students in 5th or 6th-grade. Those at the Middle Level will enter 7th or 8th-grade. The Upper Level of the ISEE is for students entering 9th grade or older.

What content can my student review during Albuquerque ISEE prep?

There are three main sections to the Primary Level. These sections are Reading, Math, and a Writing Sample. The three Primary Level ISEE exams test skills that are foundational throughout a person's life. The three highest-level exams have five sections that share time constraints, number of questions, and format across the exams. The five sections are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and the Essay section. Aside from the Essay section, all the sections of the exam are in multiple-choice format. Let's take a moment to look at the specifics of the sections in the three highest ISEE levels.

The Verbal Reasoning section gives students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of English grammar and usage conventions, and sentence construction. At all levels, students need to know appropriate vocabulary for their age and be able to use context to figure out the meaning of a word or phrase. At the Middle and Upper Level, students also need to have a working understanding of the parts of speech, word roots, and the parts of a word like prefixes and suffixes. There are 40 questions in this section, and students have 20 minutes to complete them.

During the Quantitative Reasoning section, students will 35 minutes to complete 37 questions related to mathematical reasoning. This section requires that students use some mathematical operations, but the focus of the section is more on effective mathematical reasoning and thinking. Students need to understand algebra and geometry at an appropriate level for their age, analyze data, and solve problems. Students will work with concepts such as the characteristics of geometric objects, probability, and finding the mean, mode, median, and range of a data set.

In the Reading Comprehension section of the ISEE, there are 36 questions and there are 35 minutes allocated to complete them. This section tests a student's ability to understand the content of passages that appear on the exam. The exam asks students to identify the main idea of a passage, evaluate the author's intent and tone, and understand the organization and structure of the piece. This section requires skills such as inference, comparing and contrasting, and finding information in written passages.

The Math Achievement section is focused on correctly using suitable mathematical operations to solve problems. During the 47 questions in this section, students must estimate, find the area and perimeter of 2-D and 3-D objects, and solve equations. This section tests a student's understanding of algebra, geometry, and probability. This section takes 40 minutes to complete.

The Essay is a half hour section of the ISEE in which the student responds to a prompt with a written response. Students must write clearly, organize and structure their writing effectively, and follow English grammar and usage conventions. This section will examine a student's ability to use details and share a bit about themselves as a person.
