The three highest levels of the ISEE consist of five sections which are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and the Essay. All sections except for the Essay section are in multiple-choice format. The Primary Level contains three levels (2, 3, and 4) and each level contains a Reading section, a Math section, and a Writing Sample. Level 2 also contains an Auditory Comprehension section. Let's do an overview of the sections of the ISEE. We will focus on the higher-level exams because the Primary Level exams involve more basic reading, math, and writing skills.

Students must possess age-appropriate vocabulary and be able to use context to infer information. At the Middle and Upper Levels, students must also have knowledge of Anglo-Saxon, Greek, and Latin word roots and knowledge of the parts of speech.

The Quantitative Reasoning section is focused on mathematical reasoning and understanding. This section deals less with mathematical operations, and more with mathematical thinking. Students at all levels must be able to estimate and display their ability to use numerical logic. Students will need to understand geometry, probability, and be able to do some mathematical operations that are suited to their age. There 37 questions in this section and students have 35 minutes to answer them.

The Reading Comprehension section involves questions that are based on the student's ability to read passages and understand the vocabulary, main ideas, and organizational structure of the piece. Students will need to be able to find information in the assigned passages, locate the main idea, and be able to use inferences to answer questions. This section has 36 questions, and there are 35 minutes assigned to complete this section.

During the Math Achievement section, students will have 40 minutes to answer 47 questions that deal will measurement, algebra, and problem-solving. Students must be able to work with decimals, percents, and fractions. They must also understand the order of operations, how to find area and perimeter of 2-D and 3-D objects, and solve equations.

The Essay allows the student to respond to a prompt that they have 30 minutes to complete. Students are given a prompt that is intended to be interesting to students of their particular age. Students must give an organized response that displays their knowledge of English grammar and usage conventions and their ability to use detail to make a piece more interesting.

At the Primary Level, sections are much shorter and feature basic skills such as vocabulary, math operations, and creative writing.
