What can Madison ISEE prep help my student review?
The ISEE is a comprehensive standardized exam used to measure the skills students need to succeed in independent schools. The ISEE has four levels, with each level tailored to the appropriate age and educational level of students. The four levels are Primary, Lower, Middle, and Upper. The test is available in an online format for all levels and a paper only format for all levels except the Primary. Next, we will take a closer look at each level of the ISEE.
The Upper Level ISEE is designed for students entering ninth grade or above. This level of the ISEE is also composed of five sections. The Verbal Reasoning section will assess their ability to understand high school-level vocabulary, context clues, and parts of speech. Next, the Quantitative Reasoning portion of the exam assesses a student's ability to think mathematically by asking them to solve equations and work with variables and exponents, among other things. After that, the Reading Comprehension section will task students with finding and using information from passages to answer questions. The ability to infer information from texts will be relevant here. Next, the Math Achievement section will assess mathematical operation skills. Students will need to prepare for questions pertaining to numbers and operations, measurement, and algebra, among other things. Finally, the Essay section will ask students to plan and write a response to a given prompt. While this section is unscored, it gives students the chance to tell a prospective school more about themselves.
The Middle Level ISEE is intended for students entering seventh and eighth grade and contains the same five sections as the Upper Level: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and Essay. While the sections are the same as the Upper Level, the content will be tailored to match the age and educational level of the students. For example, the Quantitative Reasoning section will measure their skills in algebra, data analysis, and geometry, while the Verbal Reasoning section will measure their middle and high-school vocabulary skills. Students will have two hours and 40 minutes to complete 160 questions and the writing response.
The Lower Level of the SSAT is designed for students entering grades five and six. This section is made up of five different sections. The Verbal Reasoning section will test their ability to use context clues to complete a sentence as well as vocabulary commonly found in elementary and middle school word lists. Next, the Quantitative Reasoning portion of the test will test their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and probability, among other things. After that, the Reading Comprehension section will ask them to find and use information from passages to answer questions, locate the main idea in a text, and locate relevant information in a written passage. Next, the Math Achievement portion of the test will test their knowledge of whole numbers, operations, and algebraic concepts, among other things. Finally, the Essay section will ask students to respond to a writing prompt in an interesting way. Students will have two hours and 20 minutes to complete 127 questions and the essay response.
The Primary Level is divided into three sections, one for students entering second grade, one for students entering third grade, and one for incoming fourth grade students. The subjects for the different levels will be the same, except for Primary Level 2, which includes a brief six-question auditory comprehension section. The other sections include Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Sample. The Writing Sample provides students with a prompt and asks them to compose a response that tells a story about the prompt. While the Writing Sample is unscored, it is provided to prospective schools to give them a glimpse of a student's writing ability, personality, and creativity. The material covered in the Reading and Mathematics sections assesses a student's necessary skills in these subjects by asking them grade-appropriate questions pertaining to reading comprehension and basic mathematical operations.
