ACT Science Tutoring review by Isaac in Waterbury, CT
We had a great first session. I did some diagnostic interviewing to understand the student's relationship to the test, and which aspects he may struggle with. Today, we focused on the Reading and Science sections; next time we will mostly focus on Math and English. With the majority of the practice problems, I guided the student through them to show how to strategically approach each type of question.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Andrew in Waterbury, CT
We had a great session. We went through a science and math test. The student is very comfortable with math, though she sometimes gets bogged down in seeing how the equations or information in a word problem go together. We also worked on 30-60-90 triangles, 5-12-13 triangles, drawing pictures of line equations, and other shortcuts and memory aids to help save time. On science, the student struggled most with comparing scientists' hypotheses. She needs to better identify the problem they're both trying to solve, which inevitably means a closer reading of the passage before the hypotheses, and not just reading their ideas on how to solve it. Also, really paying attention to the crux of each hypothesis will help the student see the differences (and similarities) between them, which is usually what the questions are about, or what assumptions undergird both of them. This can help when trying to decide if new information would invalidate one or both of them.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Josh in Waterbury, CT
We looked over the grammar practice the student had done and discussed her accurate sense that she moves too slowly on the questions. I advised her to think strategically about which questions to focus on and which questions she would be best served by making an educated guess on or simply guessing on and moving on. We spent time discussing the writing section of the ACT and good strategies to use to get a good score on the essay, which include addressing all three perspectives in the prompt and taking a clear position on the prompt question. We finished our time looking at some math questions and discussing how she can use strategic guessing on math questions she feels unable to work fully (for example, if four answers are very similar and the fifth is very different, then it is either very right or very wrong).

ACT Science Tutoring review by Aayush in Waterbury, CT
We met after some time today and I was quite happy with the progress. We worked on Science and Reading sections today. The student did great with the Science section! I asked him to take a practice test to see if the fatigue changes this score or not; however, I am hoping that it does not. His reading could use a little bit of work, but with more practice I think that we will be in good standing with this too. I look forward to our session tomorrow!

ACT Science Tutoring review by Kendall in Waterbury, CT
We met at the library and found an SAT practice book because she forgot to bring her ACT practice book and the library didn't seem to have any for the ACT. Still, math is math, and that's what we worked on. She is rather quick to assume she doesn't know how to do a problem. The biggest skill I hope to teach her is to read through a question carefully and to analyze what it's actually asking so that she can realize that she knows a lot more of the question then is immediately apparent. Once I helped her set the problems up, she could algebraically solve them very easily, but seeing as setting the problem up is usually what these tests are looking for, we're going to be working a lot on that.

ACT Science Tutoring review by Loucas in Waterbury, CT
We met from about 12:15 to 2:15. We finished going over the first practice test. The student seems to be getting more comfortable with the content and specific strategies to approach each question with. I assigned him to complete ACT Diagnostic Math Tests 1 and 2 before our next meeting and to note which questions he missed. We will review questions that he missed and/or questions that he wanted helpful strategies in which to solve the problem presented. His attitude is great and it is a pleasure working with him. His anxiety seems to be decreasing with the material.
