Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

The student and I reviewed the chapters she'd read during the week, and we then continued by reading the next chapter. We also did some speed sprints and a timing, which indicated that she is reading at 220 wpm, exactly where I want her to be. She has started to struggle more with details or, at the very least, her struggle has become more apparent to me, so I will begin to add recalling detail exercises with her in future sessions. Finally, she will attempt to read the rest of the book by next week, and then we'll begin with "The Hunger Games," the book of her choice.

Discovering prepositional phrases to enhance and lengthen written sentences. Both students were introduced to this concept by me for the first time ever. They were able to identify the prepositions and were taught to separate the phrases from the rest of the sentence using commas. They liked the lesson and were excited to use this new tool in their writing. Extra practice was to look for this type of phrase in their reading an write down ten of them to discuss together. With two students, we will work together on 20 phrases next session.

In today's session, the student and I started working on Flowers for Algernon. We worked on a character list, a character diary, a list of what we would title each chapter, and we set up a page for difficult words. I left him with the same tasks as yesterday, reading for 30 minutes daily and 3 times per week for his parents, and I also asked that he please reach at least chapter 9 in the novel by Tuesday (chapters are "progress reports" in the novel).

Today we covered the student's two summer assignments, reading comprehension, and the other an essay. After going over each assignment in detail, she chose to start with the reading comprehension assignment. I left her with the assignment to read the first two chapters. I welcomed her to read more if she had time but no further than the fifth chapter. She is to take notes and, when possible, start writing on a separate paper answers to her comprehension questions.

The student began to read the book "Pictures of Hollis Woods," by Patricia Reilly Giff. We worked on the strategy of inferring information. She responded to comprehension questions that focused on inference. We also worked on sentence completion and word analogy worksheets to strengthen comprehension and vocabulary skills.

The two students will enter 6th grade in the fall. They are reading at grade level. Their percentile scores on the Reading Section of the assessment test were approximately 60th percentile and 30th percentile, respectively. We will be working on reading comprehension, reading fluency, and vocabulary. During the first session we did higher level reading comprehension activities such as creating character webs, timelines, and writing reviews of the books they have been reading. We took turns reading aloud from "Milkweed," by Jerry Spinelli, and prepared a list of new vocabulary words from the reading. They will continue reading the book before our next session and will study the vocabulary list.
