If you have been thinking about WPPSI test prep to help your young student make the most of the educational opportunities available to them, Varsity Tutors can set you up with private WPPSI tutoring sessions to help them work toward their academic goals. WPPSI is an acronym for the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, the definitive IQ test for individuals between the ages of two and a half and 7 years, 7 months. Now in its fourth edition, some private elementary schools use the WPPSI as an admissions criterion. If you want your student to have the best WPPSI prep possible, enroll them in one of our WPPSI courses today!
Many young children are unfamiliar with both standardized testing and the types of questions they will get on test day, so it might be very stressful. WPPSI prep serves to familiarize them with what to expect, making it feel a little bit less intimidating. All test-takers tackle the following five subtests:
- Block Design
- Information
- Object Assembly
- Picture Naming
- Receptive Vocabulary
In addition, students aged 4 and up take the following nine subtests:
- Coding
- Comprehension
- Matrix Reasoning
- Picture Completion
- Picture Concepts
- Similarities
- Symbol Search
- Vocabulary
- Word Reasoning
Each of these is scored on a scale from 1-19 where 10 is considered average. These numbers are then used to calculate a student's score in each of the following categories:
Categories
- Verbal
- Performance
- Full Scale IQ
The table below provides some insight into what those numbers mean:
WPPSI IQ Test Scoring
Score | Performance Level |
---|---|
Below 70 | Extremely Low |
70-79 | Borderline |
80-89 | Low Average |
90-109 | Average |
110-119 | High Average |
120-129 | Superior |
130 and Over | Very Superior |
WPPSI test prep is tough to standardize, as traditional academic skills aren't really tested. Practice exams are probably the best use of WPPSI class time so students understand how to manipulate blocks or interpret pictures. That said, there is one academic skill that can be improved through WPPSI prep: vocabulary. WPPSI tutors may introduce your student to new words as part of their WPPSI test preparation.
A private WPPSI course allows students to approach WPPSI prep in their own way. For example, a visual learner might use flashcards to learn new words, while an auditory learner might benefit more from hearing them used in a sentence. A private tutor can also take the time to get to know your student, allowing them to incorporate their interests into WPPSI test prep sessions to make them more fun. For instance, a student who likes dinosaurs might study pictures involving dinosaurs as part of their WPPSI prep.
As a parent, you also play a role in WPPSI prep. Make sure that your student gets a good night's sleep the night before to ensure that they are ready to take the exam. A healthy meal may also improve your student's ability to focus, as hunger is a learning obstacle. Finally, try to arrive at the testing site with plenty of time to spare so that your student is calm and relaxed when it's time to take the test.
Varsity Tutors tries to make WPPSI test prep as convenient as possible. All of our WPPSI classes take place on our Live Learning Platform, giving your student the benefits of face-to-face instruction without having to commute. We also try to match you with a knowledgeable instructor who can meet with your student on your schedule for maximal convenience.
