When students reach the third grade, they take the first of five yearly assessments. Commonly known as the M-STEP, the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress measures students’ knowledge in four academic areas. Then, Michigan students in grades 9 and 10 are required to take the PSAT, which serves the dual purposes of evaluating a student’s progress in English and mathematics while helping to pinpoint the areas in which he or she may need additional review. Michigan’s state-mandated testing program ends with the Michigan Merit Examination (MME), which provides every high school junior with the opportunity to take the SAT at no cost. In addition to the SAT, juniors must also complete the M-STEP’s science and social studies sections. Here is some data to show how Troy schools perform on state assessments.

Others may choose to retake the SAT during their senior year with the intention of earning a higher score. The wisdom of a tutor who has already successfully taken these tests can be helpful to many students. Private tutoring is also an excellent academic resource for college students. Tutoring review by Rachel in Troy, MI
Today was the student and I's first session. I learned a bit about her classroom expectations and that she is preparing to take her Algebra assessment test in June. We worked on finding linear regression for data sets, and analyzing use the sum of r-squared values. She is very motivated and understands the underlying concepts of the work, but has a hard time memorizing key paths on the calculator, and makes input errors because of rushing. Speed is important in her classroom, so we talked about the importance of being efficient WITHOUT rushing through. This helps avoid mistakes that end up taking more time than if one is to go at a slightly slower pace and not make errors the first time around. We talked study skills and how to review before a test and made a plan for her to email me a couple days before our sessions to let me know if there is anything in particular she is struggling with. All in all, a great first session. I look forward to the next one.

Tutoring review by Katharine in Troy, MI
I very much enjoyed getting to meet the student and her mother. She is clearly a bright girl, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with her! We spent a few minutes at the start of the session discussing their goals for tutoring. We are going to do a Monday/Friday schedule, for now working on algebra on Friday and history on Monday, and playing it by ear if it seems like she needs more time spent on one subject over the other. She provided me with the her teachers' websites for the courses and had several math worksheets she needed to work on, plus a few past assignments that had already been graded. This was all very helpful to me, and we were able to jump right in to working on one of the math assignments, which covered solving systems of equations by graphing. She has a very good grasp on how to graph equations on a coordinate plane and was able to complete the worksheet with only a small amount of guidance from me. A couple times she swapped x and y when finding the slope or had slight confusion between positive and negative slope, but she often caught the mistake on her own before I had a chance to correct her. She was very pleasant to work with and extremely open to accepting help the few times she needed it. As previously mentioned, I look forward to continuing to work with her!

Tutoring review by Jerry in Troy, MI
The student has improved her performance recently--she got a 93 and a 91 on two tests and brought her overall grade up to an 87. Today we reviewed the test for tomorrow. We reviewed about the measures of angles and arcs and their relationships in a circle. Like last time, the student managed to get most of the work done by herself, with very limited mistakes and she only needed a minimal amount of help. We then moved to the segments of a circle, and she showed good understanding on this subject. Overall, I would say that she improved a lot on the last two sessions. She was able to do math step-by-step and made very few errors. Great student. I wish her to succeed on the test tomorrow!

Tutoring review by Mike in Troy, MI
I did a assessment to cover intro algebra II skills. The student did well and understood basic concepts. He spent the majority of the time working through homework dealing with solving inequalities with absolute values in them. We also spent about 15 minutes going over some word problems and equation/ inequality writing. This is something that he could use extra practice with doing. This is a difficult skill (modeling real world issues algebraically) and I will bring some more problems next week.

Tutoring review by Kate in Troy, MI
In this lesson, I had the student read the workbook out loud and work through the vocabulary with me so that I could give her the skills to break down the material and work through it on her own. We finished book 2, with the assignment that before our next meeting she would take the final quiz/practice test, take the real test in school, and then start lessons 1 and 2 in book 3.
