Tutoring review by Zachary in Shoreview, MN
We had a great session today. We worked on multiplication review and practiced how to multiply one digit, two digit, and three digit numbers together. We also talked about different strategies for multiplying larger numbers. He worked exceptionally hard and was successfully able to model many different strategies for taking larger problems and breaking them down into smaller, easier problems to work with. He is making great progress in building problem-solving strategies.

Tutoring review by Michael in Shoreview, MN
The student had a study guide from school on a variety of topics. We spent a fair amount of time reviewing how to graph an equation of a line in slope intercept form. In particular, this involved understanding why in y=mx+b the slope has an implied denominator of 1 even though it is a whole number, as well as why, since it is located on the y-axis where x=0, the y intercept b is the y coordinate of an ordered pair where x is always zero. We also spent some time looking at how the missing part of an equivalent ratio can always be determined by cross multiplying, then isolating the variable through division on both sides, but may also often be derived by multiplying or dividing both the numerator or denominator of the complete fraction by the same number needed to produce the known half of the incomplete fraction. I also showed him how to find the area of a trapezoid and the volume of a prism. He mentioned that his scores still seem to be showing gradual improvement with definite room for more improvement. We will continue to work towards clarity and mastery.

Tutoring review by Allysa in Shoreview, MN
Today, the student and I reviewed basic addition with creating groups of 10. We used her workbook from school as an example. Then, I wrote a page of practice problems for her to complete independently. We then worked on a few timed tests. The student was encouraged to practice her math flashcards daily in order to recall facts without having to count on her fingers. We also discussed taking timed math tests to aid in quick recall of basic facts.

We reviewed several pre-calc topics to help the student prepare for his quiz. First, we went through a few linear systems problems that used matrices to solve for 3 variables. The student did very well on these and had a complete understanding of the topic. Next, we did a worksheet which had him solving word problems that required forming linear systems with 2 variables. He was able to do all of these problems with little assistance from me.

The student reviewed math concepts today with decimals, percentages, and negative and positive number line. She will test on these this week. She is open to learning new concepts and suggested subjects she'd like to practice. She should do drills on multiplication tables up to 15 so this comes to her faster to solve all math equations. She completed a reading comprehension test for the SSAT today and scored high and will review her mistakes. Great job overall.

Tutoring review by Altagrace in Shoreview, MN
The student and I worked on writing out situations for expressions, followed by determining whether the expression pertained to addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division; the words sum, difference, product, and quotient had to be used. Moreover, the problems required a visual drawing of some sort of diagram to go along with certain problem types, expression-wise, based upon early examples provided in the beginning of the assignment.
