The Manassas School System

The city of Manassas, Virginia, is about an hour’s drive west of Washington, D.C. It is rich in Civil War-era historical sites and has a population of around 40,000 residents. The K-12 students enrolled at public schools within Manassas city limits attend schools under the oversight of the Manassas City Public Schools, or MCPS. Manassas has just one public high school.

Children of all ages and academic abilities will encounter challenges from time to time. Although there are many resources available for struggling students, sometimes self-help simply isn’t enough. A tutor in Manassas can provide your child with personal, individual guidance. Using a unique learning plan that’s tailored to your child’s goals and preferred learning style, a tutor can strengthen the weak spots in your child’s knowledge in a targeted, efficient manner.

Osbourn High School is the sole public high school within the Manassas city limits. Osbourn has a student-to-teacher ratio under the Virginia state average. Despite this, the individualized attention of a Manassas tutor can ensure students get the attention they need to keep with or get ahead of the class.

Like elementary and secondary students across the nation, Virginia students are required to take the Standards of Learning (SOL) exams, which measure their comprehension levels in four key areas: English, history/social science, mathematics, and science. Beginning in third grade, students are tested once a year in English and mathematics. In the third, fifth, and eighth grades, students take additional exams in science and history. When students reach high school, they are given End-of-Course tests upon completion of classes like geometry, algebra, and biology along with the annual English and math SOL tests. The chart shown below shows how well students around Manassas have done on state assessments in recent years.

Manassas Test Scores

Many high school students are preparing for college admissions exams in addition to the SOL tests. While your student may have years of experience with the SOL exam, the breadth of concepts students need to know to score well on the SAT or ACT can intimidate even the sharpest students. Standardized test prep is one area where private Manassas tutoring can make a tangible difference in your student’s performance. When your son or daughter works with a tutor with a track record of success, he or she has a leg up on progress toward achieving his or her academic goals. The benefits of tutoring don’t end with high school graduation, though. Students attending one of Washington, D.C.’s dozens of colleges and universities can also reap the benefits of private tutoring.

Tutoring review by Rodolfo in Manassas, VA
In this lesson we covered mean proportions of right triangles and the use of the Pythagorean theorem for solving for unknown sides of triangles. The main challenge of the student was the simplification of the algebra involved in these problems, such as the numbers raised to a power and square roots. After reviewing a few of techniques for effective simplification of exponential algebra, the student was able to work through the problems on her own with only minor (non-conceptual) interventions. I also suggested a few useful sites where she can review the theorems of mean proportions in right triangles.

The student and I reviewed for her math test on area and perimeter - for circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombuses and kites. We covered all of the formulas, the common problem set ups, and how to use the distance formula when quadrilaterals were placed on the coordinate grid. Overall it was a good session and I think we made some good progress!

The student had questions on terms and concepts surrounding systems analysis. We went through his instructor's materials and did a deep dive into the areas the student had questions about. I gave him a few links that help summarize his first session's materials. At the end of the session he had a much better understanding of the concepts.
