We looked at his current grades and discussed any issues with them. He has a book report project that he needs to start and I underlined important information on his syllabus. Then we worked on the rest of his homework for biology. We also looked at the classes he is scheduling for next year. We will meet again on Thursday and work on any new homework he has.

The student has a test tomorrow. We started off working on her homework on graphing inequalities. I taught her skills that she would need to graph the inequalities and how to use a test point to determine which side of the line to shade. I also taught her how to find the maximum and minimum values for an objective function. She didn't quite understand the need for constraints so we went over it in detail and now she feels equipped.

The student and I reviewed sections 8.2-8.4. We completed sample problems on how to multiply a fraction or mixed number by a whole number, find multiples of fractions, and multiply a fraction by a whole number using models. I also gave him a website he could go to for more sample problems. He expressed 100% confidence in this material. We ended our lesson by doing rapid multiplication review for his competition at school.

We got a start on the review sheet for the student's test next week. At this point, we are just trying to get her through the test, and that means an understanding of how to use the formulas properly and when to use each one. The concepts at this level are so complex and require such in depth three and four dimensional thinking that focused more on getting the problems right than the conceptual analysis.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Enon, OH
We prepared for an upcoming exam focusing on complex numbers written in both standard and trigonometric form. We focused in particular on adding ratios of complex numbers and writing the solution in standard form, converting from standard form to trigonometric form, finding complex solutions to quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, and calculating arbitrary powers of complex numbers by using the trigonometric form. We also discussed how to use a calculator to check that the conversion from standard form to trig form is correct and briefly discussed what each part of the trig form of a complex number represents. After working through some sample problems, he seemed comfortable with the material in question and confident going into the exam.
