Tutoring review by Jackson in Bellevue, PA
Today we worked on parameters and areas. The student had simple rectangles and squares down, so I introduced some more complex shapes for her. After a little explanation the student did very well. We spent a significant amount of time on finding the circumference of circles. Pi is a little above her grade level, so I had her just use 3 in its place. We used some diagrams to show how pi related the diameter to the circumference which I think helped her understand why we use pi. I had her label the radius, the diameter and then find the circumference of several circles. Overall I was very happy with how the session went.

Tutoring review by Adwoa in Bellevue, PA
The student and I had a great day working on multi-step math problems. We added and subtracted fractions and then as a challenge started moving towards fractions with unlike denominators. This was somewhat challenging at first but her enthusiasm made it fun and we made great progress. I left her with two problems that were about 3 steps each for practice and I anticipate them being completed without a problem.

Tutoring review by Andrew in Bellevue, PA
This week the student and I covered both English and math work that he was assigned. His class is continuing their study of introductory geometry and have now moved onto the circle. He was presented with a variety of different terms and definitions regarding the properties of circles and their importance, as well as various important measurements when studying circles: the diameter, a line segment drawn from one point on the circle to another that passes through the center of the circle; the radius, a line segment drawn from the center of the circle to any other point on the circle (which is also equal to half of the diameter); a chord, a line segment drawn from any two points on the circle; a central angle, an angle formed from drawing two radii; circumference, the perimeter of the circle; an arc, a section of the circle's circumference bounded by two points and measured in degrees as the measure of the central angle created by drawing two radii to the boundary points of the arc; two types of arcs, major, > 180 degrees, minor, < 180 degrees; semicircle, effectively half of a circle, a diameter and an arc that measures 180 degrees. His homework tested knowledge of these properties and measurements as well as their applications in the drawing of circles with given characteristics. The student did very well with this assignment. I recommended to him that he pay very close attention when they cover those problems in class to make sure he understands how to properly use a compass, and to also bring home his compass for his next session to get more practice using it. After finishing math, we continued onto English which was a review practice on adverbs testing cumulative knowledge of the entire chapter. We looked at the different times of adverbs, adverb clauses, and how to understand what is modifying what in example sentences. This student is also doing very well with this and has massively improved in English since we first started in our sessions. We will continue to keep up this work as he and his class move onto more complex applications of knowledge of the parts of speech and grammar in general.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Bellevue, PA
The student and I continued to catch up on old incomplete homeworks to be turned in to her teacher for credit as discussed with her father. We worked on the problem sets for Section 14 B and C, on similar triangles and ratios, and right triangles divided into constituent similar triangles by an altitude. We constructed some notes on the topics for her to use for review before any tests and quizzes. She demonstrates fairly good understanding of the subject material, but is sometimes discouraged by word problems or when it is not immediately clear what formula she should use when presented with novel problems. We worked on strategies for taking an inventory of what a question is asking for and how it relates to earlier problems in a set that she has already completed.

Tutoring review by Annalisa in Bellevue, PA
We read over an essay the student had written for school, and we focused on choosing the best way to organize an essay (there are many, and he has to pick the one that makes the most sense for his writing purpose) and finding ways to make writing more clear and concise (eliminating excess information, parallel structure and specific word choice, etc.). Then, we practiced those same skills with an essay he wrote about his trip over the summer. To prepare for our next meeting, the student will further revise his second essay to make it clear and concise, and he will practice writing a new essay on his own. We decided on "video games" for his new essay topic because he currently has no writing assignments for school, so he can focus on any topic that interests him.
