I graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Literary and Cultural Studies and a minor in Film Studies. I am currently working on my Master of Arts, again focusing on Literary and Cultural studies with a minor emphasis on Film Studies. Throughout the latter part of my undergraduate career and continuing into my graduate career I have attended department-wide workshops that encourage students of all writing levels to attend. At these meetings essays of all variants are edited for grammar, mechanics, and overall content. I have helped countless students through these workshops and hope to continue my efforts in a professional capacity. I have a relaxed and encouraging style. I enjoy helping students of all writing levels delve into their essays and find the root of their interest. Regardless of writing level every essay has a truly unique perspective and I take great pride in helping others discover the nature of their work when they are uncertain of what they are trying to say. Outside of my studies I continue to read and watch movies. I use these leisure activities to influence my work as often as I can by inserting them as topics for discussion in my own essays. This helps me remember that studying and learning should always be fun.

I am a graduate of Wayne State University. My passions in my academic career included literature, phonetics and linguistics, and grammar in both the English and Spanish languages. I am a PhD candidate at Wayne State University for Biomedical Engineering. I graduated in 2014 with a dual degree major in Biochemistry and Psychology. I have three years of undergraduate research experience working in a Computational Chemistry Lab and two years of experience working in a wet chemistry lab in industry. Whether working over practice questions in a test booklet, reading an instructional manual or an obscure book for pleasure in a library corner, we are engaging with the words and ideas of others and measuring them for their value, use and relevance. Thinking is never done in total isolation anyway but rather is always a social exercise and activity. The best teaching and learning then, I think, allows us to consider knowledge, from the most practical to the most abstract, as both social exercise and activity. This means, as exercise, that we get comfortable with the necessary repetitions of learning--reading and writing, listening and speaking with consideration. As social activity, strong teaching and learning allows us to consider knowledge production as constantly unfolding, knowledge production as a place where self-expression and communication within a larger community are not only welcome but of absolute necessity.

For nearly twenty years, Ive gained great satisfaction from tutoring. My approach to teaching is more or less a fusion of my experiences as an undergraduate, my interests in philology and linguistics, and my teaching experience at the University of Minnesota.Teacher-centered vs. student-centered teaching:In my teaching I have maintained the principles of proficiency-based instruction, and have been content to spend more time in a student-centered atmosphere than I probably would have been hitherto.I will, however, switch to a more traditional approach at times, that is, to a teacher- centered environment, concentrating on specific issues of grammar, structure, or style. Students appreciate the input of an expert, especially when they have a very limited knowledge base in the target language.My warm-ups are most always based on one-on-one teacher-student interaction within the classroom, which encourages students to make themselves heard in a friendly and supportive environment. Such warm-ups in recent years have fallen in one of several categories:1. Asking students to give information about the world (which, I remind them, includes the classroom).2. Asking students to discuss what they did the previous evening.3. Asking students to discuss what they did not do the previous evening.4. Asking students to make statements and have the rest of the class determine whether those statements are true or not.5. Giving students 30 seconds to compose a question, which is then asked aloud.6. Having students suggest random "answers" and having other students pose appropriate questions.Reading:As teachers, we encourage students to read for general ideas, not details. This is, I feel, the logical and correct approach. The difficulty is that it is easier said than done, especially when one uses authentic materials designed for native speakers. Whatever the text, pre-reading exercises must be carefully chosen and students must be prepared for key vocabulary items that will appear in the text.I have attempted to assist in vocabulary building by creating picture dictionaries and matching exercises based on the reading, examples of which are to be found later in this document. I also stress and encourage reading aloud in class at all levels to practice pronunciation and sentence intonation. I have furthermore put together storyboards for first-year reading texts, so that stories can be followed more easily.Technology:In the last few years, I have found that technology has allowed me, as an instructor, to design materials that look more professional and creative. Using graphics programs and experimenting with word processing programs encourages one to think a bit more like a designer, and thus try to see things from a student's perspective.The importance of technology in the classroom has also become more clear to me over the years: in addition to fostering a variety of learning approaches, the use of videos, computers, chatrooms, and, especially, internet activities constantly reminds students that they are not learning some secret language of a classroom, but one spoken by millions throughout the real world.One must always beware, however, of using technology for its own sake. The fact that a good online or computer exercise exists does not mean it needs to be used. As a coordinator (see below) I encouraged my instructors to pick and choose which exercises and types of technology they felt benefitted students most and, moreover, to avoid those exercises in which the student's negotiation of the task becomes overly complex with regard to the objective.General:My success rate in the first, second, and third years has, I think, been very high, and I have always prided myself on the fact that my courses have been in the main both informative and entertaining. Students have appreciated my stepping back from the fore to let them carry out tasks and activities on their own, but they also like the fact that I am willing to take class time to explain concepts that are unclear or linguistic information that I find relevant. Indeed, in one first- year class, my eager and diligent students constantly pressed me for more and more philological information until I was forced to remind them that we had other material to look at in the modern language.My experiences have confirmed my beliefs that 1) traditional approaches can be used alongside newer ones as long as one's goals are clearly set, and 2) that how one teaches something is always as important as what one teaches.

We have all had horrible teachers and outstanding teachers. I believe that I am the latter. Over the years as a math tutor and instructor I have learned to be very patient and understanding. Allowing students to communicate their needs to an instructor is very important. But it is also very important that the instructor understands exactly what students need. I allow students to try problems on their own with the use of notes, textbooks, and/or online research first. This allows me to see what exactly they need assistance with. I want students to understand that it is okay to make mistakes because them making a mistake helps me to help better understand a math concept. I believe that my enthusiasm comes naturally because I enjoy teaching Math. This enthusiasm and energy helps to motivate students to do well and to also enjoy math. I also motivate my students by setting high expectations for them. Before any tutoring session begins I explain to them what is expected of them and what I will do to help them meet their expectations and goals. People ask me what makes me most proud. It is not my grades, exam scores, degree, or any personal accomplishment but it is the growth of my students that makes me most proud. I feel that I have completed my job with each struggling student when they are understanding the material better are doing better in math. I also enjoy seeing them be more confident about math.

I am currently finishing my last semester at Wayne State University, and will be graduating with a Bachelors in German and International Studies. I have tutoring experience with 8 and 9 year olds in Math and Science, as well as English tutoring for a 10 year old German student.The subjects I teach are German 1 to 4, and can help students on their way to learning a second language. My favorite subject to tutor is German, it has always been my favorite subject in school and I am always excited to teach others what I have learned. Hello. I attended Michigan State University and received a BS with Honors in Chemical Engineering. While doing so, I worked for MSU as a math tutor. It was at this time I realized how much I enjoyed helping others learn what seemed to come so easy to me. After graduating, I worked for a year to pay off my student loans and then enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit to get my secondary certification.After moving to Texas where a brother of mine lives, I got certified to teach math, chemistry, and physics. After teaching chemistry for six years, I moved to the Austin area and have been teaching math since. Having taught all three subjects, math is by far my favorite because it is so essential and fun, as well as applying to so many areas including chemistry and physics.When working with people to help learn and understand new concepts, I feel it's important to review background knowledge and show how it applies to the new material at hand, relating to the adage that if you don't use it, you lose it.Like I mentioned, learning math can actually be fun, especially the feel of success.Of course, my whole life isn't all math. Personal interests, outside of family life, include collecting. From things like old toys, lunch boxes, cartoon character cookie jars, comics, collector cards, and more, I've probably have or had a collection of sorts. Many things have even spilled over to my classroom, particularly PEZ dispensers.To sum it up, I believe one can have fun in whatever they are doing, even learning math. I like to tell people that there came a point in my life where I had to either grow up or teach, and I haven't regretted my decision since!

I am a Registered Nurse with 28 years experience. I received my BSN and MSN at Wayne State University. My MSN track was Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program. I received my DNP from the University of Detroit Mercy.I have a wide range of nursing experience over the years. I have worked as an Emergency Room Nurse, Infection Prevention & Control, Quality/Safety & Accreditation, Management, Nursing Education Specialist , Adjunct Faculty and Clinical Instructor. I am also a CPR and First Aid instructor and board certified in Nursing Professional Development by ANCC.I am passionate about the nursing profession and patient safety. I believe that every nurse should be prepared to provide quality nursing and practice in a safe environment.I enjoy teaching nursing students who are excited to learn the profession and have the desire to succeed. I have found success in helping students by sharing real life experiences, applying strategies that are practical and having open lines of communication.

I went to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, a highly regarded college prep high school in Detroit, and Wayne State University, where I graduated in 2012 with a degree in Film Production. I am a filmmaker with an interest in teaching and interacting with youth. I am very friendly but expect high effort and a positive attitude. In my eyes, every student has the ability to accomplish whatever goals they set their minds to as long as they work hard and push through obstacles.I specialize in tutoring English and reading skills, particularly in preparation for the ACT, SAT, and other standardized tests.
