Hello! I'm honored to be a Varsity tutor! Being able to assist you with goals and dreams is very special to me! I know you believe in yourself because you're reaching out for assistance. It takes strength to reach out. I love to see people succeed. Believe in yourself. Reach for the Moon and if you don't make it at least you'll be along the Stars.

I have always had a passion for learning and teaching science, particularly biology, chemistry, and mathematics. My earliest mentoring experiences were during my time in Boy Scouts as I had the opportunity to teach younger scouts important skills as I earned the Eagle Scout Rank. After high school, I attended Saint Vincent College where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Certification in Biotechnology. In college, I was an Opportunity Program tutor for a high school student preparing for the AP Chemistry Exam. Regarding college students, I served as a note taker for the General Biology course, a tutor for the Cell Biology course, and a tutor for a Biochemistry course for graduate students. After college, I attended the University of Pittsburgh for graduate school and earned my PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology. During graduate school I was a mentor for a junior high school student in a summer program and helped her design and execute a research project examining a genetic knockout mouse model. I also served as a teaching assistant for first year graduate students in a Biomedical Sciences Intro course and first year medical students in a Histology course. Currently, I am a postdoctoral research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School where I am continuing to perform biomedical research. When I am not in the lab, you can find me exploring historical sites and hiking outdoors.
University of Pittsburgh graduate with a bachelor's in music composition and a minor in Italian. I'm particularly passionate about teaching math, music, and language. I've enjoyed teaching students of all ages and levels and look forward to helping you accomplish your goals!
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Computer Science. I have experience in tutoring friends with work in their classes and am strong in math. I will try to get the student to understand topics by showing them multiple ways to get to the solution!
I am a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and hold a B.S. in Neuroscience, minors in Chemistry and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, as well as a certificate in The Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. I think of myself as a life-long-learner, and am a firm proponent of education; in fact, I am currently pursuing an EMT certification, and hope to return to school to pursue a medical degree in the near future. I am most passionate about teaching math, biological sciences, and psychology, due to my strong background in those subject areas, and due to my personal experience struggling with and overcoming different concepts within these subjects as well. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, discovering new music, and reading the memoirs of accomplished women.
Strategy is something that is very important to me. In my free time, I enjoy activities and games which demand focus and forethought. While I was a student completing the IB diploma, a bachelor's in music and Russian literature, and a master's degree in historical musicology, I learned that each project and assignment requires planning and strategic forethought to achieve the best result. In my time teaching music theory and history in the classroom at the University of Pittsburgh, it translated to developing personalized lesson plans to find the most effective means of teaching for students. Individual attention and effective communication are vital for learning, and it is my position as a teacher and tutor to ensure that this happens. In addition to IB and AP music classes, I am available to tutor a wide variety of writing subjects including college essays and the IB extended essay as well as literature and reading comprehension at all grade levels. Additionally, I can help students prepare for the verbal component for the GRE. As such, I will develop a strategy that will best help each individual student with whom I will work. I look forward to being able to support and assist students for Varsity Tutors!
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Culture and Linguistics and K-12 Teaching Certification in Spanish from the University of Pittsburgh. I received my Master in Education from St. Mary's University of Minnesota and then moved back to Pittsburgh to earn my Pre K-12 Principal Certification from the University of Pittsburgh as well as my Doctoral Degree this past summer. I have extensive knowledge of Hispanic culture - and a passion for the music of Latin America. I have utilized my Spanish-speaking skills not only to teach in a K-12 school setting, but also as an interpreter in the military. I took advantage of many opportunities while serving in the Navy and Army reserves to use my Spanish speaking skills in many medical clinics in Central America. With regard to tutoring, I enjoy working with all age groups. I have tutored students from the middle school level to the college level. I have tutored Spanish to NFL players as well as Italian to high school-aged students. I believe that learning another language is a very rewarding journey. As a native speaker of Italian, I can attest to the fact that learning about the culture is imperative to learning the language including history, food, music, customs, etc. Hence, as I tutor second languages, I am always sure to include information about these topics to maintain interest and increase knowledge. In my free time, I am an avid outdoorsman. I enjoy fishing, hunting, and boating. My favorite sport to watch on television is NHL hockey. I also play several instruments including the guitar and Venezuelan cuatro. I also have a supportive wife and five great children with different learning needs which helps me to relate to all types of learners.
I first began tutoring unofficially my senior year in high school after my physics teacher asked me to help some of his freshman students. It became an incredibly rewarding experience, for these students that I stuck with for nearly the entire school year were able to boost their grade up and feel more confident in their work. Some of my hobbies include playing tennis, hiking, and watching reruns of "Malcolm in the Middle" (my all-time favorite TV show).Currently, I'm a senior at the University of Pittsburgh double majoring in Neuroscience and Spanish and minoring in Chemistry.
Hi, I'm Erica, and I've been tutoring and teaching for over ten years. I love teaching Chemistry because it allows us to look at the fabric of the Universe! With just a few useful tools (Your Handy Dandy Periodic Table), you'll be ready to tackle all kinds of problems with success and ease.My experience and background includes a B.S. in Chemistry, Undergraduate teaching as well as a Masters of Arts in Teaching (Secondary Science Education) and over five years as a Chemistry instructor at an independent college prep high school. I worked as an undergraduate tutor, tutor at a large learning center, and one-on-one private tutoring for many years. I love to adapt my teaching method to fit my student's needs! If you like a simple, organized approach to learning, and enjoy a conversation around your studies we will make a great fit!
My parents taught me the value and importance of having a good education. I have learned from experience why that was important to them. It wasn't always easy but making a serious effort and spending quality time on my academic work, often with someone who understood better than I did, made me a better student. It also made me more successful in my life and in my career. For more than 20 years I have tutored, counseled and mentored middle school and high school students and I enjoy spending time with them. In many ways, they have tutored, counseled and mentored me as well. My formal, post-secondary education came from the US Naval Academy, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh in the fields of English, Math, Counseling, Psychology and Administration. I learned a lot about myself and about life from these educational experiences. No one can ever take away from you what you truly know and understand. Everyone can learn.Among my many interests are sports, fitness, all aspects of music, theater, concerts, movies and gardening.
I am an educator with more than 10 years of experience in both elementary and secondary grade levels. I currently work as an Assistant Principal at an elementary school, but my teaching experience is in grades 7-12 teaching English, Writing, and Social Studies. I have also worked as a literacy coach in a K-8 school.Writing is my passion. As a student at the University of Pittsburgh, I majored in English Writing and Political Science. I worked as a column writer and editor at the student newspaper, and attended several writing workshops. My writing samples have been both published and entered in contests, and I love helping students find the joy and reward in their writing. For over a decade, I have helped students perfect their craft and become strong, succinct writers. I have read and edited class-assigned and college admission essays.I am a Level 2 Google Certified Educator. In my spare time, I enjoy settling into a really great novel.
I am a current second year dental student at the University of Pittsburgh, where I also graduated with my B.A. in Religious Studies in 2015. I am from the Pittsburgh area and graduated from Sewickley Academy in 2011. My tutoring experiences include mentoring with underprivileged Pittsburgh public school students and after-school tutoring for middle schoolers in the Mt. Lebanon area. I graduated the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Politics & Philosophy, and I moved to Cleveland to teach. I've spent the last three years in classrooms with the last year dedicated to subbing and working with different types of students and in different subjects. Most of my experience comes in teaching Reading and Writing, and I have helped students of all ages improve both their real life skills in those subject areas and their test scores. I have also tutored kids who did not speak English to help them increase their speaking and writing skills. I can tutor math up to Algebra II, and I have experience teaching math in the classroom. Lastly, I can tutor in the Social Sciences, particularly AP Government and AP US History, as I majored in those subjects in college.I really enjoy tutoring test prep subjects, because the time spent applying for college is so exciting and stressful. It is very easy to create a goal and work toward it when a student already has their sights set on a particular college, and I love being a part of that process. I like to think of myself as a goal-oriented tutor, helping my client pick out the thing that he or she wants by the end of our sessions and driving toward it. I also believe in meeting my client where they are in their subject matter and helping them learn in their particular individual style. It does not matter how my client learns, whether it is verbal or visual or even kinesthetic--I try to accommodate and ensure that they know the material the way they will remember it best.Aside from teaching, my interests include music and cooking. I grew up listening to punk rock, and in the process, I learned to play guitar and drums. At this point though, I listen to just about everything including hip-hop, electronic music, country, and pop. I also enjoy cooking and learning to make cuisines from other cultures. Lately, I have been trying to master Lebanese food. Lastly, I like to travel. I have been all over the USA and Western Europe, and I have even made it to the Middle East.
Organic chemistry can be a challenging subject, so it is important to seek the right guidance. With 7 semesters of experience as a teaching assistant at the University of Pittsburgh, I have had a lot of experience mentoring students on the subject. My responsibilities as a TA included teaching recitation and supervising organic chemistry labs, tutoring undergraduates 4 hours a week, creating and grading quizzes and exams, and grading exams from lecture courses. Having someone with this vantage point guide you through the subject would be a great asset. I have a master's degree and am a published organic chemist. I am now applying to doctoral programs to start in fall 2016 and am tutoring students in the Pittsburgh area until then. I look forward to helping you ace organic chemistry.

College student driven to help other students excel academically. I personally like teaching through real world examples and through doing practice problems to gain understanding.

Hello, prospective students! I have made a life of teaching and studying. Among the subjects to which I have given the most attention are philosophy and history, each of which I have also taught at a college level. My courses have always been writing-intensive, honing my skills at guiding students in mastering their self-expression in English. I have also taught test preparation courses for the SAT, GRE, and LSAT. The most rewarding of all my teaching endeavors has been helping guide my son through his remote and online education. Now I want to put all of this to use for students here at Varsity Tutors. Any student can improve with the right personal care and hard work, and I am committed to providing the attention and support you need.
I am qualified to tutor students in the area of high school and freshman college chemistry because I am a part-time chemistry instructor at King's College and Bloomsburg University of PA. I have been teaching in some capacity for over 20 years. In addition to teaching lecture and lab courses, I also teach on-line courses. In terms of tutoring experience, I have tutored at the high school, college, and post-graduate levels. I also used a chemistry tutor when I was in college, so have been on both sides of the "desk."When not working, I am busy with my family. I am involved with my 3 children's school and extracurricular activities. I was recently hooked on the Bones TV show because of the forensic aspect and interesting characters.
I am currently a junior college student at the University of Pittsburgh, where I study molecular biology and anthropology. My two areas of specialties, one in the sciences and the other in humanities provides me with a diverse and holistic background to education. I have loved the experience of tutoring students from all age groups. I mentored high school students in the disciplines of chemistry and physics, middle school children, and college students in the discipline of General Biology. Tutoring is very dear and near to my heart as I have in my journey been blessed with amazing teachers who have helped me along the way to become better. Through tutoring, I have been able to identify my passions in lifescience and in particularly biology. Tutoring can not only improve one's academic performance, but also open multiple doors of opportunity. It personally has for me and I couldn't be more thankful; it is one of the reasons that I am involved in tutoring. I've always loved working in academia as seen students growing and developing is rewardingI was once that person who benefited immensely from tutoringseeing someone else improve and reach for their goals is almost magical. As such, I am motivated to help othersa mission in my life and a larger goal as I hope to one day become a doctor. My main teaching philosophy is to help students learn and identity fundamental techniques that they can then apply to future problems and situations. While I believe that content-based learning is crucial, I also believe that learning the principle skillsets and analytical techniques fares much better in the long run. Hence, I will strive to both address content-level and application-based techniques to best help students. Moreover, I am a firm believer in active learningthis means utilizing different sources of media (i.e textbook, YouTube videos, animations, graphs, images, etc) to best learn conceptsparticularly in science. My specialties include tutoring in the STEM (Science, technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field. STEM is a huge part in my life as I am currently a research assistant at the Vascular Institute of Medicine focusing on the intersectionality of Type 2 Diabetes and Immunology. I love being on the forefront of discovery as I get to apply the information that I have learned in the classroom to help better understand chronic diseases. My interest outside of tutoring and academia is placed heavily around sports. I love playing and watching basketball with my friends and familyit is an experience that brings everyone together. I also love cooking and making new recipescross-cultural understanding and awareness is a big part of my life and cooking is a tasty way of understanding someone else's culture.
Until I was a post-doc at Temple Medical, I did not realize my capacity for relating my knowledge of my fields of interest to students and visiting researchers. The enjoyment of helping to shape the minds of those who are up and coming scholars excites me. More so though, it is the exchange of ideas and perspectives that drives me to continue pursuing mentorship.
I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Political Science from Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New England. I am blessed to have done three semesters abroad, the last at the Jagiellonian Universitys School for Polish Language and Culture in Krakow, Poland where the high quality of teaching has been a great example for me in my own teaching. I volunteered for two years as a teachers assistant in an ESL class for adult immigrants. I love languages, especially our own rich English language. Shakespeare has a huge fan in me! As does Vergil; in college, I carried extra credits and after college had private tutoring session specifically because I wanted the opportunity to read The Aeneid in its original language. I am eager to work one on one with students, to evaluate their personal needs and address them, to help them to the joy of understanding and success.
I graduated from NYU School of Law with a J.D. and University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in philosophy. Before law school I tutored the LSAT and law school admissions extensively one-on-one. Since graduation, I have worked on the in-house legal team of a major pharmaceutical company, and continued my passion for helping students beat the LSAT and achieve their law school dreams.I believe there is not a single best approach to learning the LSAT. Rather, students should follow a plan tailored to their strengths and weaknesses, and learning style.
"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." - Benjamin FranklinPitt 2020 Molecular Biology/Non-Fiction Writing Major on the Pre-Med Track.
I have been a teacher of physical therapists and other students for 30 years. I am invigorated by working with students from a diversity of backgrounds and enjoy sharing the learning journey. I appreciate every student that I've interacted with.
I'm a first-year med student at Pitt Med. I graduated from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts with a BS in Biology this past May. As much as I love medicine and the hard sciences, most of my tutoring experience is in general ACT prep, in addition to academic and creative writing, middle school math and reading, and high school and college math. Some of my favorite all-time classes were medical sociology in college and AP US Government and Politics in high school. Through Tufts, I taught English as a second language (3 semesters) and citizenship exam prep (1 semester) to Hispanic immigrants and refugees, which taught me a lot about how to gauge students' understanding, teach tough subjects, plan activities, provide flashcards and the best possible study materials, and make the most of the students' time. I love tutoring because I know how much a tutor's patience one-on-one can make the difference. I love sharing my study tips and test-taking strategies so they can study efficiently and make the best use of their time to get that desired result. I want students to feel heard and supported and help them find methods best suited to them. I want to help students enjoy learning and find more confidence in themselves through mastering tough subject matter.

I want to help every one of my students achieve their goals and also help make their dreams a reality. When I am not teaching or tutoring students I enjoy playing golf and exercising. I have played golf for over 17 years and I have never broken a hundred. I promise you I am a much better teacher and tutor than I am a golfer.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience and Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh on the pre-med track. I have always enjoyed teaching students, as I helped my two younger siblings with their schoolwork frequently growing up. I also have tutoring experience at a local tutoring agency teaching students aged 5-16 in math and reading, and I have learned how to effectively teach students at various ability levels and in different age groups through this experience. I am also a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship winner and an AP scholar, so I believe that I can provide helpful advice and tips for students who are navigating the difficult world of standardized testing. Through these experiences, I am confident that I can address your needs in subjects such as math, writing, and reading by working with you one-on-one and devising a plan to help you reach your goals. Outside of school, I love trying out new recipes, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the outdoors!
I am an undergraduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in both Applied Mathematics and Economics.I worked at a start up website Expii that taught math, and I found I enjoyed it a lot. So I decided to get a more hands on approach by teaching math topics to anyone who needs help.My teaching style would focus more on solving problems with practice. I would have you show me how you solve problems and give you help along the way. I like to make things fun and will try my best to make any of the math as interesting as I can.
I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees in Linguistics and Hispanic Languages and Literatures, a minor in Portuguese, and a certificate in Latin American Studies. While completing my undergraduate coursework, I was a teaching assistant for a Portuguese 3 class and volunteered to tutor students in speaking, listening, reading and writing. After graduating, I spent ten months in Brazil teaching English to teenagers and adults. I am most passionate about ESL, Portuguese, Spanish, and writing, but I'm able to tutor a variety of other subjects as well. Based on my experiences as both a teacher and a student, I believe that students learn best when they are truly engaged in the content and are using it in a practical and valuable way. Because of this, I cater my teaching approaches and lessons to each student's needs and desires to help them reach their individual goals. In my spare time, I love traveling, dancing, listening to music, and spending time with my family and friends.
I am passionate about helping students because I think that learning is important and that every student should have the opportunity to succeed. I personally loved going to school and learning and want to help other students love learning by finding approaches that work for them!I have mentored students in Middle School for the past 4 years through a local program. Through this program, I started to realize how much I enjoyed working with students to help them achieve their goals. I recently was chosen to help facilitate a local chapter of the Girls Who Code club and will be working with students from 6 - 12th grade to help to teach coding and foster an innovative mindset.I attended the University of Pittsburgh and hold a B.S. in Computer Science. I am currently working towards getting my Master's in Computer Science.I tutor for Math, Science, and Computer Science.I really enjoy helping students with Math. I personally have always loved Math but understand that not everyone feels that way! I like to help people also enjoy Math.My teaching/tutoring style relies on getting to know the student and incorporating their interests into the subject area (if possible). This helps to engage the student and make connections to things in which they are already interested.Outside of academia, I work full-time as a Software Developer and also assist my employer with corporate training for software products. I enjoy getting to spend time mentoring local middle schoolers and volunteering with non-profits in the area.
I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in philosophy, with special honors from the department. Within philosophy, my interests are in logic, the philosophy of math, the philosophy of language, and ethics - each broadly construed. Outside of philosophy, I have interests in writing, generally; mathematics; language in general, but the French language in particular; programming computers; and politics and the law, among others. In my final semester, I was permitted to lead three recitations for an introductory philosophical/mathematical logic course. It was this experience that made me aware of two things: 1) I enjoy teaching and 2) For many students, more is learned in a 1-on-1 setting than in a classroom full of one's peers. This is due, I think, to the personalization of the learning process that is not justly possible in a full classroom. It would not be fair for a teacher in such an environment to answer just one student's questions, and tailor future lessons according to the needs of that student! However, in a 1-on-1 setting, the sole concern of the teacher is to help a single student achieve their academic goals. I am not happy unless my student is happy, which fact is the driving force behind the success of my students.
I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where I majored in Spanish and earned a Certificate in Latin American Studies. During my time at Pitt, I worked in the writing center within my department and helped many students with their writing and Spanish skills. The last two summers I spent time traveling through Ecuador and Bolivia conducting research that resulted in publication. I also gained significant writing and editing experience while working at a Latin American news website. I enjoy helping people especially as they are trying to learn a new language.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have a BA in Rhetorical Communication from University of Pittsburgh, and I will return to Pitt in August 2016 to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA). My day job is Patient Advocate for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but my evening job is teaching Cantonese. I have taught Cantonese since 2014.Teaching Cantonese is very important to me because I love sharing my language and culture with others, and I feel very fulfilled from helping students learn a new language. I have two philosophies when teaching Cantonese: 1) practice makes perfect, 2) listen and watch. I believe Cantonese students become successful when they use these two philosophies to learn the tones, unique sounds, and complex phrases. My interests are in public health and hospital administration. I am more than happy to share or give advice about working in the health field. Outside of work, I am the Children's Ministries leader at my church and a Red Cross disaster services volunteer. In terms of hobbies, I like to play the piano and read superhero comic books.
I am a current third-year student at the University of Pittsburgh studying towards the degree of a B.S. in Health Informatics. I started off my tutoring by tutoring my friends and other students at my local library after high school. During this time, I used to work with 3-4 students by helping them with difficult problems and providing them with very useful tips and tricks to rapidly improve their math scores on the SAT. Later, I went on to start tutoring 1-on-1 through various online tutoring platforms. After seeing the improved results of the students I tutored, I can confidently say that I am very passionate about tutoring in SAT and ACT Test Prep in all sections. As a strong advocate of education, I firmly believe in the necessity of high-quality tutoring for standardized testing, an important factor in obtaining higher education. It is my sincere endeavor to instill this profound appreciation for learning within all my students.
I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Mathematics and Economics as well as a B.A. in Philosophy. This fall, I will be continuing my studies at the University of Michigan as I pursue a PhD in Economics, and I hope to work as a professor in applied microeconomics after completing my degree. While economics is what I am most passionate about, I have also really enjoyed studying mathematics, which I was able to pursue extensively as an undergraduate. As a tutor, I hope not only to push my students to excel but also to help them begin to enjoy their studies as well (as difficult as that may be for high school students!). In line with my aspirations to work in higher education, I believe that education is an incredibly important and rewarding endeavor, and I look forward to watching my students succeed. In my spare time, I enjoy running, reading and cooking.
