Hi! I'm Veena and I recently graduated from the University of Miami with a B.S. in Microbiology and Immunology with Chemistry and English Literature as my minors. I've tutored at a Math and Reading learning center in high school and became an employee of the Academic Resource Center at UM where I tutored my peers in STEM subjects. I was an assistant science teacher at a middle school for a year, and a workshop leader for chemistry classes at UM.I love tutoring because it keeps me on my feet. I know that not every student is the same and I know how to vary my style of teaching to fit the student. My priority is to eventually get the student to understand concepts independently. I consider my strongest asset to be my ability to make the process of learning relaxed and enjoyable. Having been a student very recently, I can relate to the stress students feel when they don't understand the material. My goal in each tutoring session is to put that stress aside and to take baby steps toward fully understanding a concept. My favorite subject to tutor is chemistry because of its interconnectedness. It builds on itself and when you start to piece everything together, everything just clicks.I'm currently working in a clinical research lab and applying to medical schools, and through my clinical experiences I've come to love working with people, which is why tutoring has been such a joy. In my spare time I like to try new recipes, dance, watch every movie I can, and train for marathons.

I graduated from the University of Miami with a BS in Physics. While in high school, I attended math competitions across the country including one at Princeton University and another at New York University. My love for mathematics eventually led to virtual tutoring through Florida Virtual School where I tutored over 150 hours in Pre-Calculus, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Chemistry. I love to teach because it lets me share my enthusiasm for mathematics and science with other students and helps me get a deeper understanding of material that is useful for my higher level mathematics and physics courses. As a tutor, I break down complicated problems into manageable concepts so students can gain confidence in solving these problems on their own.

I am a graduate of the University of Miami, where I majored in Psychology and English, with a focus in Creative Writing, and minored in Art. As a student, I was employed through America Reads. I worked individually with a kindergarten classroom of both special needs and neurotypical students, working with each child to develop a program that was both fun and effective in helping them overcome deficits. I tutor in English, literature, writing, math, and test prep at a variety of levels. I am most passionate about literature and writing as they are both hobbies I enjoy, but I also enjoy math because each problem feels like a puzzle to solve. I believe that learning should be engaging and fun, and was grateful to have many educators who helped me develop a strong educational background that has since provided me with many opportunities. I believe it is important to provide children and young adults with learning environments that emphasize the fun of learning, rather than portraying it as an inescapable chore. I try to provide an environment that encourages students to become active learners. In my free time, I enjoy reading all types of books, writing poetry and fiction, scuba diving, and hiking and slogging in the Everglades.

I tutor math for all grade levels up to precalculus. I worked for twelve years as a senior design engineer at the Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Payloads Program before I gave up engineering to home school my five children. Some of the payloads I worked on were Magelan Venus probe, Galileo Jupiter probe, Hubble Space Telescope, Ulysses solar probe, Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, Spacelab, and the International Space Station. Why did I switch to education? To pass on to my children my love for math, science and engineering. I am happy to say I met my goal!I have experience teaching high school math and science in private schools for students who need high level instruction in math and science. I also have experience in direct instruction and coaching competition robotics teams. I love tutoring math because I often find it is an opportunity to turn downtrodden students around and other times I get to enjoy and marvel at an enthusiastic math lover. My tutoring style is collaborative, warm and most of all, encouraging. Whether the student comes to tutoring for remediation or to accelerate, I find he or she benefits from a friendly, non intimidating, supportive demeanor. I often find that students who come to tutoring for math help have met some personal obstacles which can be overcome with persistent optimism.I love ethnic dance, ballet, taking walks, cooking for friends and family, drinking iced coffee and making silly jokes.

Successful tutoring involves two essential elements: an engaging, tutor who is effective at communicating concepts, and a committed, involved student who wants to learn. Frequently, I hear from parents that their student enjoyed the session with me. I believe this is because I do my best to make my sessions interactive, engaging and educational. I am proud to say that I have received positive feedback from parents thanking me for taking the time to help their student reach new heights in their academics. Most notably, a student I met with twice a week got his first A in his eighth grade Algebra class. Another one of my previous students got into her into her dream school-National Cathedral with the test taking strategy I provided. I absolutely love sharing the tools I have learned in my educational journey with others and seeing them flourish. Varsity Tutors gives me the ability to do just that!My track record includes: high school students for the SAT, 4th graders for the Cogat, SSAT, and ISEE, 8th graders for school subjects like algebra and the ISEE and SSAT.Thank you so much for reading. From a young age I learned to value my mother's perseverance and sacrifice. My mother supported my grandmother and I while working three jobs in Hialeah, Fl. I assumed the responsibility of caring for my grandmother while my mother worked, day in and day out. Although she had little time or money, she would manage, every week, to volunteer in the community with me by her side. As I sit on the threshold of a career in medicine, I am humbly reminded of so many of these early incidents, which define and shape who I am today. Armed with the support of my mother's strength and exposure to some of the best learn educational opportunities that Miami had to offer, I was able to reach far beyond the expectations of my immediate environment. As I grew through meaningful experiences that led me to a choice of career while at the University of Miami, I journeyed through a similar progression of experiences at Howard University College of Medicine that narrowed my specialty choice to Anesthesiology. One of those experiences was the medical mission trip I was privileged to be a part of to Haiti prior to my third year of medical school. A day did not pass during this mission when I did not feel compassion for this community. The Haitian people have so much resilience and strength despite their devastating living conditions. I was fortunate enough to work closely with the anesthesiologists in the operating room throughout the entire mission trip. I was also able to observe the rapidity with which a patient might deteriorate and how quickly the anesthesiologist had to act. It was both exciting and rewarding to see that our efforts of stabilizing numerous patients succeeded. The practice of keeping patients alive and free of pain during such a difficult time was fascinating to me. During the mission, I also witnessed the impact that the lack of services and resources had on the community's health. I initially went to Haiti to serve a population in great need, never knowing that my life would have been impacted by witnessing the hope they had admist their day-to-day struggles. With a particular interest in international health, I plan to continue to promote awareness of health disparities that face many people globally. After my trip to Haiti and during clinical rotations I realized that my most fulfilling moments were being in the operating room. Specifically, I was more fascinated by the medicine behind keeping the patient stabilized and free of pain. Anesthesiology is tightly intertwined amongst most specialties of medicine. Whether caring for an obstetric patient who is bringing life into the world or stabilizing a critical patient, the attentiveness and intricacies that form the dynamic relationship between physiology and pharmacology intrigue me. Also, I find the prospect of practicing medicine with a diverse population of patients alluring. When I consider my interests and personality, along with my particular attention to detail, I feel that I am well suited for a career in anesthesiology.I am excited about the opportunity of pursuing a career in anesthesiology. I aspire to join a program that will challenge me and strengthen my drive to not only learn anesthesiology, but to teach others as well. With the clinical training I receive, as well as the compassion and congeniality I exude, I will own the responsibility to relieve pain and support my patients during the most critical moments of their lives. As I continue on this journey I strive to become a knowledgeable physician, adept anesthesiologist, and an effective educator. I know that my passion and dedication to patients as well as to learning will serve me well in my future endeavors to ultimately becoming a well-rounded physician.
