I graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2013 with a degree in Music Education. I spent the entire next academic year tutoring math full-time at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, MA, as part of Match Education's "Match Corps." I am currently pursuing graduate studies at Tufts University. In high school, standardized tests did not come naturally to me. With an A average in all AP and honors classes and an overflowing list of extracurricular activities, it frustrated me that something like one test score could affect my college admissions. But like most challenges in my life, I viewed it as motivation. I took a course, got private math tutoring, took practice tests, and came up with essay prompts. Ultimately, I got a very strong score, ranking me in the 96th percentile. I have since graduated cum laude from Tufts University with a BA in English and minors in Art History and Media Studies.As a member of the National Honor Society and Peer Leaders, I decided to use my experience to help others. I am currently studying Civil Engineering and Computer Science at Tufts University. Degree expected May of 2016. As the oldest of three siblings, I have spent a lot of time huddled around math and science textbooks, explaining concepts and helping my brother and sister see problems the way I do.I believe strongly that the student gains nothing from the tutor who does their work for them, so I go out of my way to make sure each student understands that grasping the concepts is much more important than solving the individual problems.Besides working with my siblings, I also have experience teaching swim lessons, volunteering in classrooms, and tutoring High School students.My favorite subjects to teach are Math and Computer Science. Outside of academia I am interested in basketball and music production.

I've always been interested in thinking deeply about anything. Whether word puzzles, chess moves, history, mathematics, or literature. As a kid, I would trade going to the playground for staring at a map and try to remember the countries, their capitals, their borders, etc. I then found the world of mathematics where thinking deeply about even the simplest ideas, as Bertrand Russell did in his famous paper proving why 1 + 1 = 2 from the ground up, was key to mastery. I wasn't fond of rote memorization and applying formulae. Instead, I was interested in the patterns that were involved. Why was there a formula for quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations but not quintic equations? I was curious. I found my Wikipedia. There I read about Galois Theory and how Galois proved there to be no quintic formula. Of course, I had not the slightest clue about group theory, ring theory, or Galois theory at the time. With this yearning to always try to seek more knowledge, I didn't hesitate to major in mathematics at Tufts University. As a tutor, when I work with students I try to make them question everything and try to guide their curiosity.

I believe that everybody enjoys learning. The frustration most people experience in school stems from the fact that the topics are approached in a rigid "one size fits all" manner. I will work with each student to tailor their learning experience to their likes and dislikes. Rather than use boring, generic objects I will use subject matter directly related to the student's interests.Furthermore, I understand that not everybody learns in the same manner. I excel at auditory learning while many others prefer visual information. I will work with each student in a way that I believe they will be most receptive to. I have since gone abroad to teach English in Madrid, Spain, and returned to get my Master of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University with an expected completion date of May 2015. I have tutored on and off since high school, mainly in Geometry, Chemistry, and History. When I went abroad, I not only taught English in school, but tutored it on the side as well, mainly to students who were having trouble and who were looking to get ahead. I am totally devoted to the student, not willing to give up when things become difficult to understand or explain. I believe I am good at making students really care about the subjects that they are learning, not just learn it for the sake of the test or their teachers. I tutor many subjects, but would have to say that my greatest passions lie in Spanish, History, and Chemistry. I would say that my greatest strengths as a tutor lie in my ability to give perspective on a subject and in my ability to learn as I teach. In addition to tutoring, I greatly enjoy tennis and reading, and I am an avid movie buff.
