Manuela, my mother, earned a college scholarship in 1937. She was not allowed to go to college. In those days young Hispanic ladies were not allowed to go away to college. She stressed that after God and family, education was very important. Despite the fact that we were raised poor, my mother always found a way to pay for all 8 children to have 8 years of private school,Catholic schools. School was very important. By the time I was 5 I knew I was going to be a teacher. When I went to kindergarten I came home and taught my younger sister everything I learned. I became an aunt when I was 7 and always played school with my nephews and nieces. I have 24 nephews and nieces. Also I now have 50 grandnephews and grandnieces, plenty of students. When I was a 6th grader I began tutoring 2nd and 3rd graders at the Boy's Club in Corpus Christi at the age of 10 years old. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing their attitudes change toward Math. When I was in the 8th grade, the 7th grade teacher was our Math teacher. Her 7th graders were terrible and she just wanted to relax so I taught our Math class for most of the time at the age of 12 and 13. When I was in the 12th grade my teacher wouldn't let me take Advanced Math because she said I already knew everything in it. Later that year she had an operation on her throat and had to use a microphone just to be heard. She asked me to teach her class for her in 1972 at the age of 17. When I was a college freshman second semester, my first semester Math teacher asked me to grade papers and eventually I became her aide and tutored college algebra students on a regular basis. It was always so enjoyable to see students who were so sure they were going to fail end up with A's and B's. When I worked on my Masters I had the privilege of teaching 3 classes every semester. It was great. The only sad thing was so many students would tell me that they wished they had taken in their freshman year and learned that they could do Math well. They quite often had changed their majors because of their fear of Math. I decided I needed to teach in high school instead of the university level so that I could catch them before they let their fear of Math keep them from doing what they really wanted to do. I was blessed in being able to do what I thoroughly enjoyed and felt that everyone should have that opportunity. As I started teaching high school, I noticed that a lot of students needed more help than was possible during the regular school day. I began night tutorials. One night tutorials for the Calculus students and another for the rest. One year I provided night tutorials for all the Geometry students in the school. That is when I saw the need for my book, "You Can Do Proofs." So many teachers don't know how to teach how to do proofs. My book takes care of that problem. In September 1997, after suffering constant sever pain for 5 years, I was convinced by the Medical Board of the Teacher Retirement System that I was no longer able to teach full time. I loved teaching mathematics and so I had to start tutoring Mathematics when my body lets me. That is why I tutor at my home office. I can rest or take extra medication before the students arrive. I cannot tutor more than 2 hours back to back. I have to stand up, stretch, exercise, or even take a nap before I can continue. Sometimes the student's needs do push me into doing more than I should and then I have to take longer to recover. I usually do manage to keep a good balance. I also have to tutor because God told us to share our talents. Teaching, tutoring and Mathematics is my talent.

I am currently a graduate student at the University of Indianapolis studying Human Biology. My experience teaching began my junior year of high school when I started student teaching in the elementary music program. I attended Texas State University, where I earned two Bachelor's of Science, one in Mathematics and the other in Physics, and I continued on to earn my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. I have been tutoring students in mathematics and physics since 2008, so I have been learning about and refining my teaching methods for over a decade.I view mathematics as a great, inverted pyramid, wherein each new idea is built upon a foundation of interwoven concepts. However, throughout my twelve years of experience working with students, I have found that many students seem to believe that mathematics is merely an ever growing list of discrete facts and that learning mathematics is a matter of just memorizing these facts in preparation to regurgitate information for exams. In my view, students who have been exposed to this disconnected view of mathematics are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information and seek to memorize only the particular steps and equations necessary to solve each type of problem, rather than trying to understand the overarching structure and reasoning that can be applied in a wide variety of contexts to solve many different problems. Therefore, I deliberately and explicitly focus my teaching on: connecting mathematical ideas, and modeling reasoning about structure.Connections: I explicitly connect the current topic to prior mathematical content. For example, during integral calculus courses when discussing integration through trigonometric substitution, textbooks often present a table showing three categories of algebraic expressions along with their corresponding trigonometric substitution and reference triangle. Rather than show these to my students and encourage them to memorize these particular examples, I instead prefer to show how we can use the Pythagorean Theorem to build a right triangle based on a given algebraic expression and then, using knowledge of the trigonometric functions, how to find a useful trigonometric substitution. I find this to be a more useful way to approach these problems because this method allows my students to apply the same reasoning to all integration by trigonometric substitution problems, thus affording students greater opportunity to be successful when they are working on their own. Moreover, this approach can help students avoid common memorization pitfalls, such as using a trigonometric substitution and a reference triangle that do not match.Modeling Reasoning about Structure: To help my students develop problem solving and reasoning skills, I provide a model of appropriate mathematical reasoning by thinking aloud as I work through problems, discussing things such as which features of the problem stand out and indicate possible solution methods. In order to help my students try to imitate my cognitive processes, I organize my problem solving methods around a series of questions that I ask myself about the problem in order to determine how to progress. In the example of working on integration by trigonometric substitutions, I first discuss how each other method of integration (e.g., substitution, by-parts) would be inappropriate, and then examine which form of the Pythagorean Theorem resembles the algebraic expression in the problem. I then use this information to build a right triangle that describes that form, and finally use this triangle to choose an appropriate substitution. As my students work, rather than tell them the next steps, I instead first refer back to these organizing questions and try to get them to find answers themselves. I prefer this approach because I believe, and explicitly discuss with my students, that understanding the rationale underlying the steps in a process is better than merely memorizing the steps for two reasons: the rationale's structure reflects and reinforces the structure of the content, and using a process consistent across examples reduces the amount of information that students need to know in order to be successful on assessments.I have also worked with future teachers as an instructor of a first course in foundational mathematics content. In this context, it is of paramount importance that my students understand why the mathematics works like it does and how the various topics are interconnected so that they are able to provide instruction to their future elementary and middle school students in ways that emphasizes the connections among various models, between models and algorithms, and between prior and new content. For example, while discussing the base-ten number system, we explore how manipulatives (e.g., toothpicks, beads) can be iteratively bundled into groups of ten to demonstrate how place value is used and that this process can continue forever. Then, with non-integer real numbers we capitalize on this pattern to justify the idea that we can, similarly, divide a single unit into 10 smaller pieces (i.e. into 10 tenths) and that this process also continues indefinitely. This understanding of bundling and unbundling groups serves to emphasize the consistency of the base-ten structure across all place values, and also provides a basis for the "carrying" and "borrowing" actions present in the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction. By showing these future teachers connections among mathematics, and by modeling reasoning about structure, I hope to affect change in their views of mathematics as a discipline as well as provide an example of how we, as teachers, can help guide our students by relying on the structure of mathematics and through responding to student questions with carefully chosen questions of our own that encourage students to think for themselves.

I am a graduate of Texas A&M University- Commerce where I received a Masters in Library Science. I received my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at Texas State University. Since graduation, I have spent the last 15 years in public education as a tutor, Kindergarten teacher, second grade teacher, and elementary librarian. As an advocate for early childhood education, I firmly believe that the foundation laid during these formative years shapes a child's academic, social, and emotional development. Early childhood education is not merely about teaching basic skills; it is about nurturing a child's curiosity, creativity, and love for learning from the outset. In my spare time, I enjoy reading more than anything, but also love traveling and hiking!

My current career path as a future educator can all be traced back to a moment that, at the time, I had not given much thought to. As a sophomore I was stopped in the hallway by a teacher I had never met before; he went on and on about how a few of my teachers had come to him and told him that I needed to be a part of his program. I immediately began to panic. Was I not doing well in my classes? He then explained that he ran a peer tutoring program through the school that matches students selected by the staff with other students who needed a little extra help. I had often answered my peers' questions in class as we worked and thought nothing of it, but apparently all my teachers had noticed. These teachers all saw something that I could not yet see for myself. Five years later and I am about to graduate from Texas State University as a Special Education teacher. I have had several years of experience working with high school students in areas of algebra, geometry, English, Reading and Science, as well as working with special populations. I believe every student, no matter what their challenge, deserves the right to the best educational experience possible.

I am an honors student at Texas State University woking toward a BS in Forensic Anthropology with minors in Mathematics and in Sociology. I have been tutoring friends and peers in various subjects since high school, though the bulk of my ability and expertise lies in essay, paper, and speech writing/editing, non-calculus based statistical analysis, basic algebra, and in test prep skills. My ultimate desire is not only to help students understand subjects that they may be struggling with, but to help them cultivate a interest in and passion for the material itself. Understanding and ability in a subject is great, but a true desire for knowledge outside of the classwork itself creates a student driven by curiosity and interest instead of just wanting to pass the class. In my free time, I work at the Osteological Research and Processing Laboratory at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University. I also enjoy reading, watching documentaries, and finding new places to explore.

I am passionate about helping students because I've been a student my whole life! Even though I'm a professor now, I love to learn. And now that I have experience, I love to help others along the learning journey. I have degrees in English and education from Rice University, UT Austin, Texas State, and Texas A&M. I also studied abroad in England at the University of East Anglia and have traveled to many countries. I tutor English and Spanish (my family is from Mexico City).
