I love working with students, particularly tutoring because it allows me to watch them blossom over time. I am a personable, easy-going tutor who wants students to feel comfortable working with me. I'm starting a PhD program in the fall and looking for a few tutoring opportunities to supplement my fellowship.

Though originally from South Texas, I recently relocated to Austin to pursue a Ph.D. in English. My areas of specialization are Medieval and Renaissance British literature. Prior to this, I received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Texas State University-San Marcos and, while pursuing my M.F.A., lived in San Antonio. As I continue my graduate studies and teach colege-level courses, I am excited to share my love of the written word with students who want to grow as writers and readers. While the majority of my tutoring and teaching experience has taken place within a college writing center or classroom setting, I would be well-suited to work with college-bound high school students preparing for AP English exams and college application essays. I also have extensive experience working with students who have developmental and remedial educational needs and, additionally, have experience tutoring students for whom English is a second language. Where literature is concerned, aside from being well-versed in early British literature, I also have abiding interests in African-American literature, Mexican-American literature, Native-American literature, and poetry in particular across time. My undergraduate and master's degrees required me to read far and wide within the American and British literary traditions, however, and I have had great success working with students who struggle with literary analysis.I believe that everyone is capable of critical thought and creative expression regardless of her or his educational background or learning level. Everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard and a story that deserves to be told. As a tutor, my primary goal is to uncover and foster these things in my students because I believe that you cannot use the voice that’s uniquely yours until you first believe that you have one. And while I will put on my teacher hat when the occasion calls for it, I am first and foremost a tireless cheerleader and a relentless believer in my students. I strive to empower my students by cultivating their self-confidence and encouraging them to take intellectual and creative risks, all of which are qualities that extend far beyond the confines of an English class.Because I am a writer—specifically, a poet—many of my interests and hobbies revolve around language and literature. I am an avid reader of everything from Greco-Roman mythology to Contemporary American Poetry to Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Other interests include foreign languages in general and the Spanish language in particular, the American Southwest, classical music and music in general (I sing and play the clarinet, oboe, recorder, and ocarina), the visual arts, Star Wars and Star Trek, and the Middle Ages. I love being outdoors and am an avid hiker and backpacker. I also love to travel and have wandered across the United States, Mexico, Peru, India, and England. I hope to return to India one day and dream of going to Thailand and Tibet. My work schedule keeps me fairly busy and my cats Linus and Fergus keep me perpetually on my toes, but in my spare time, I enjoy practicing yoga, discovering the next best place to eat that nobody has ever heard of, combing through the shelves at Halfprice Books, and exploring the city of Austin.

I am currently a graduate student at Texas State University, pursuing a specialist degree in School Psychology. I had the pleasure of coordinating a trip to the Southwest Collegiate Championship in spring 2017, where I trained and took two teams of three individuals. Along with this, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Queretaro, Mexico in summer of 2016 for a month. I also mentored for two years through P-16 Initiatives and Personalized Academic and Career Exploration at Texas State University. I currently am attending the University of Houston in the pursuit of a PhD in Economics. After finishing three years in the program I currently have two more left and really look forward to reaching my goal.As far as tutoring is concerned, I have taught for a number of years and through the process have come to recognize a few key principles to learning.I understand that a lot of students have various difficulties in school, but most of them boil down to a small number of causes which are completely fixable. The two which I try to isolate in my tutoring sessions are the fact that Math and Economics seem COMPLICATED and BORING to students.Math is complex and overwhelms a number of students. Many students get a problem incorrect before they even begin to work towards the answer simply because they freak out after reading it. I remember back before I learned one little precept by which I now live my life, I used to stare at some Math problems and think "How will I ever solve this, it is impossible!" What I didn't realize then, but do now is that Math is EASY if you split it into steps. Just like pro golfers will say "I just take it one hole at a time", Math experts take each problem one step at a time. And, after you put the steps together you will be surprised with how simple the most complex problems can be.Math is also boring, to most. Yet, it can be surprisingly entertaining to some and the difference is driven by one's ability. Getting problems incorrect is certainly no fun, but when you reach the level of solving 90-100% of the problems correctly, it begins to grow into a passion. And, you start making the connections to how Math is actually important in your every day life. I like to emphasize to my students how it feels to work out problems completely correctly and the sense of accomplishment that one gets from a perfect answer.I realize this sounds extremely Utopian , but it is the true story of how I went from an average Math student in high school to scoring perfectly on the Quantitative portion of the GRE. Manuela, my mother, earned a college scholarship in 1937. She was not allowed to go to college. In those days young Hispanic ladies were not allowed to go away to college. She stressed that after God and family, education was very important. Despite the fact that we were raised poor, my mother always found a way to pay for all 8 children to have 8 years of private school,Catholic schools. School was very important. By the time I was 5 I knew I was going to be a teacher. When I went to kindergarten I came home and taught my younger sister everything I learned. I became an aunt when I was 7 and always played school with my nephews and nieces. I have 24 nephews and nieces. Also I now have 50 grandnephews and grandnieces, plenty of students. When I was a 6th grader I began tutoring 2nd and 3rd graders at the Boy's Club in Corpus Christi at the age of 10 years old. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing their attitudes change toward Math. When I was in the 8th grade, the 7th grade teacher was our Math teacher. Her 7th graders were terrible and she just wanted to relax so I taught our Math class for most of the time at the age of 12 and 13. When I was in the 12th grade my teacher wouldn't let me take Advanced Math because she said I already knew everything in it. Later that year she had an operation on her throat and had to use a microphone just to be heard. She asked me to teach her class for her in 1972 at the age of 17. When I was a college freshman second semester, my first semester Math teacher asked me to grade papers and eventually I became her aide and tutored college algebra students on a regular basis. It was always so enjoyable to see students who were so sure they were going to fail end up with A's and B's. When I worked on my Masters I had the privilege of teaching 3 classes every semester. It was great. The only sad thing was so many students would tell me that they wished they had taken in their freshman year and learned that they could do Math well. They quite often had changed their majors because of their fear of Math. I decided I needed to teach in high school instead of the university level so that I could catch them before they let their fear of Math keep them from doing what they really wanted to do. I was blessed in being able to do what I thoroughly enjoyed and felt that everyone should have that opportunity. As I started teaching high school, I noticed that a lot of students needed more help than was possible during the regular school day. I began night tutorials. One night tutorials for the Calculus students and another for the rest. One year I provided night tutorials for all the Geometry students in the school. That is when I saw the need for my book, "You Can Do Proofs." So many teachers don't know how to teach how to do proofs. My book takes care of that problem. In September 1997, after suffering constant sever pain for 5 years, I was convinced by the Medical Board of the Teacher Retirement System that I was no longer able to teach full time. I loved teaching mathematics and so I had to start tutoring Mathematics when my body lets me. That is why I tutor at my home office. I can rest or take extra medication before the students arrive. I cannot tutor more than 2 hours back to back. I have to stand up, stretch, exercise, or even take a nap before I can continue. Sometimes the student's needs do push me into doing more than I should and then I have to take longer to recover. I usually do manage to keep a good balance. I also have to tutor because God told us to share our talents. Teaching, tutoring and Mathematics is my talent.

I immediately continued on to graduate school and completed my Master's degree in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, specializing in Language Acquisition at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona in December 2020. My Master's thesis investigated a student's second language learning abilities depending on differing teaching platforms: face- to- face vs. live video lessons. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring natural areas, yoga, and rock climbing.

I started out tutoring my peers while I attended college at Texas State University, where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. When I was not studying, my time was consumed by many activities including my job as a medical scribe in the emergency department of Seton Hays Hospital and my membership with my sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. I volunteered on weekends through the Ronald McDonald House Charities and San Marcos's local Senior Citizens Home.After college, I decided to continue my education and pursue a medical degree. I am currently enrolled in the Medical Sciences program at the University of North Texas Health Science Center's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. While I await decisions from medical schools, my time consists of working out, running outside, eating mac & cheese, and now tutoring those who were once in my shoes.I want to provide those in need with the skills to become the best versions of themselves through the arms of education. Whatever the goal may be, your success will not be measured by how many times you fail, but by whether you decide to stop trying. If you never stop trying, then you will succeed.

I am an honors student at Texas State University woking toward a BS in Forensic Anthropology with minors in Mathematics and in Sociology. I have been tutoring friends and peers in various subjects since high school, though the bulk of my ability and expertise lies in essay, paper, and speech writing/editing, non-calculus based statistical analysis, basic algebra, and in test prep skills. My ultimate desire is not only to help students understand subjects that they may be struggling with, but to help them cultivate a interest in and passion for the material itself. Understanding and ability in a subject is great, but a true desire for knowledge outside of the classwork itself creates a student driven by curiosity and interest instead of just wanting to pass the class. In my free time, I work at the Osteological Research and Processing Laboratory at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University. I also enjoy reading, watching documentaries, and finding new places to explore.
