I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am a recent graduate of Princeton University's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. I am passionate about teaching and mentoring and have done so in multiple capacities over the last four years, including a fellowship during which I taught pre-algebraic math to a group of middle school students from traditionally underserved backgrounds in Saint Paul, MN. I love interacting with students and seeing them grow over the course of their studies. I'm ecstatic at the opportunity to learn alongside them as we venture into educational rabbit holes and uncover key concepts about math, science, and everything else.

I graduated from Princeton University in the Spring, where I received a B.A. in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology with minors in Global Health & Health Policy and Gender & Sexuality Studies. I have been tutoring since 2006, when I joined a program tutoring with a local middle school. Since then, I have worked with high school and college students in a broad variety of subjects. Although I am passionate about all of the subjects that I teach, I have always been especially interested in Biology, and I love working with students to see the big picture connections between the facts of life. In general, my tutoring style focuses on drawing generalizable principles out of the material to help a student internalize and fully absorb content, which I believe makes learning a rewarding activity in its own right. In my spare time, I enjoy reading science books and blogs, trying out new recipes, and exploring the many museums throughout the city.

After growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attending college on the east coast at Princeton University, the warm weather of Houston is a nice change of pace! I have lived in Houston since January of 2015 and have come to love the city. At Princeton, I was a four-year member and senior co-captain of the women's crew team. My passion for the sport led me to coach both high school and middle school students in my hometown of Milwaukee, and I loved working with the students and helping them achieve their goals. I am incredibly excited to be working with students once again! Outside of work and tutoring, I love cheering on the Green Bay Packers, exploring the city and watching the food network.

Standardized tests are a game--a game you can win. Winning the game is about mastering both test-taking strategies and content skills.Applying for college in general is a game. You must build a profile similarly to how you build your Facebook profile. Your college application "profile" is your opportunity to show colleges how awesome you are with the aim of compelling them to send you a friend request. It would be my pleasure to work with you on test prep; including SAT, SAT II Latin, SAT II German, AP English, ACT, ISEE, and HSPT. I would also enjoy working with you on persuasive essays and research papers, Latin I-III, English I-AP, algebra I, or calculus AB.

I graduated cum laude from Princeton University in 2014, majoring in Politics with minors in French and Theater. Over the last two years, I've worked in the media and entertainment world and will be applying to law school later this year to matriculate in the fall of 2017.I'd be a great tutor particularly because of the success I've observed in tutoring my younger cousin (rising HS sophomore). I also tutored classmates throughout my high school career in a variety of subjects. In my opinion, the most important attribute in a tutor is flexibility: being able to tailor goals and strategies to a particular student's needs and optimal learning styles. My strengths are in methodically breaking down concepts in a variety of subjects and making them accessible, especially with visual aids and diagrams. I also have an ability to motivate students to think for themselves by asking stimulating questions ("Okay, we know Mt. Everest is closer to the equator than Rome, yet it's still colder than Rome. But what else is different about the two that could explain why that's the case?"). Finally, I've found that the best way to facilitate learning is to highlight easily understandable parallels to the content being studied. For example, I would compare a historical event to an ongoing, contemporary controversy. Or I would encourage students to think of historical figures as actual characters with goals and motivations instead of just a name on a page. Likewise, when tutoring vocabulary, I would encourage students to make an educated guess about a word's meaning by thinking of other words with similar roots.Through it all, students need to feel that their tutor is someone dependable, trustworthy, and fun to be around. This is an attitude I'd bring with me to any session.

I enjoy helping others succeed in any way I can. After spending a few years helping students in my hometown prepare for the SAT, I've more recently focused on the hard sciences. Whether you're a visual, auditory, or tactile learner (or some combination of all three!), I'm confident I can assist you in understanding and mastering difficult concepts!I plan to matriculate to medical school in the summer of 2014 after taking a gap year filled with relaxation, a lot of hockey, and hopefully some scuba diving if I'm lucky enough to escape the barren oceanic depths of New Jersey!

I attended Princeton University for undergraduate and Rutgers for my master's degree and have a Master's in Finance. I have been tutoring since I was in middle school, and I've done tutoring on and off for 12 years as of now. My favorite subject to teach is and always has been chess, but since I started college I've expanded to SAT and ACT prep as well as college essay and general admissions coaching. For me, the most important thing in teaching is maximizing retention: I will make jokes and tell stories, "wasting" time during the lesson, to make sure that the important parts of what I say are engrained just as much as the nonsense. Unsurprisingly, I like to have fun when I teach and prefer a more casual teaching style with lots of conversation and back and forth questions and little lecturing.

I have been passionate about tutoring since high school, where I began by helping younger students excel in math and science. My love for teaching grew through my involvement with programs like Hatch Tutors in college, where I worked one-on-one with an underprivileged kindergartener to improve their English skills. Hi! My name is Alexandra, and I am a Princeton University Neuroscience major with 5+ years of tutoring experience. I specialize in SAT/ACT/PSAT prep and have successfully taught topics ranging from computer science and basic sciences to elementary reading and writing and college essay writing. In high school, I scored a perfect 36 on the ACT on my first attempt, a perfect 1520 on the PSAT/NMSQT, won "finalist" status in the National Merit Scholarship competition, and was a medalist in the New York Science Olympiad. As an undergraduate at the top-ranked university, I focus specifically on standardized test preparation, including the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. I have an understanding of the structure and timing of the exams and the strategic approaches that are required to achieve top scores. I have successfully supported students in improving their performance through individualized study plans because I understand that not all students can use the same approaches to succeed. My approach emphasizes effective time management and a mastery of recurring question types. Outside of college test preparation, I have tutored students ages 5 to 17 in a variety of topics. A common teaching approach I use is to introduce new concepts with example problems that we work through together. I then explain each strategy and help the student through another problem, encouraging them to explain their thinking step by step. Finally, I let the student tackle a problem independently. Once a student can articulate why a method works, they are truly ready to apply it on their own. While this method suits many students, I understand that everyone learns differently and pride myself on being adaptable within and outside of lessons.

During my Junior and Senior years of High School, I tutored a few students on a regular basis. I specialize in Math and Science. More specifically, my strongest subjects are Algebra 1/2/3, Geometry, Trigonometry and ACT Science. I have always found the maths and sciences to be both the most interesting subjects, but also the most applicable to real world problems - this is why I chose to major in what I did. Because I usually tutor in Math, I often tutor in the style of showing how to do a few problems step by step, and then having the student try a few more difficult problems, asking questions along the way. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. Outside of academics I play Viola, enjoy running and exercising to stay healthy, and listening to all kinds of music.
