My teaching philosophy is focused on a single objective - that students learn. I have a Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from Temple Law School. My GRE score was a 326, and my LSAT score was a 173. I've tutored over 60 students through Varsity Tutors. I'm committed to helping students reach their full potentials.

I currently work as a 5th and 6th grade math teacher at a charter school in southern New Jersey. Before becoming a teacher, I was an aide at a high school for behavior disorders and learning disorders, I.e. cognitive mild classes and emotionally disturbed classes.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English from Moravian University. With over four years of experience working with elementary students, I have developed a strong foundation in tutoring subjects such as English, Social Studies, and foundational math. My teaching philosophy centers on creating engaging and supportive learning environments where students feel empowered to explore their potential. I thrive on creating tailored lesson plans that address individual learning needs, drawing from my time as a student teacher and assistant at the Casa Guadalupe Center. I am passionate about helping students succeed academically and fostering a love for learning. I enjoy incorporating interactive activities, like vocabulary games, to make lessons enjoyable and effective.
Hello from The City of Brotherly Love! I am excited to meet you and start our learning journey together. When you choose to work with me, I see our time together as a mutual learning experience. We are in this together! While I may be the subject matter expert, the key to our success is that I am learning right along with you. While my primary efforts are focused on addressing whatever it is that challenges you, I will always see you as so much more than that. I want to learn about who you are as a whole; a unique person with their own style, strengths, and interests. As a result, I will create personalized lessons that address the whole of you. The results will go beyond grades or test scores. When you allow yourself to learn how you learn best, you can build the strategies and tools to support how you learn, regardless of subject or setting. I am passionate about what I do but it starts with you. If you are ready for this, then I am in this with you. Here is a little about my professional experience and areas of expertise:I am an innovative, research-obsessed, action-oriented educator with twenty years of experience working in a variety of roles, and settings, and with students from all backgrounds and ability levels. My passion is developing and utilizing accessible, effective, and meaningful instructional design as a vehicle for student empowerment and social change. My areas of expertise include:- Structured Literacy (decoding and encoding)- The Five Pillars of Reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension/reading for meaning- Universal Design for Learning- Brain-based Learning- The ability to make learning accessible, effective, and meaningful for ALL, regardless of ability level- Using a student's strengths and interests as a vehicle for addressing challenges- Executive Functioning Skills- Self-Awareness, Self-Determination, and Self-Advocacy skills
I teach Spanish and Latin American literature and culture because I believe language learning is a way for my students to build bridges and make connections across cultures, both in the U.S. as well as abroad. I agree with Nelson Mandela who once wisely said "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart". Learning a second language can be a powerful tool in bringing humans together, and in teaching students to appreciate and respect diversity. My language teaching pedagogy is not only based on the development of all four language skills, listening, reading, writing, and speaking, but also integrates cultural knowledge. It is important for my students to know that a language does not exist in a vacuum, that they will not truly "know" a language unless they know the contexts in which it is spoken and the cultural practices of those who speak it. My goal in every class is for my students to see language learning as an asset to their future career and to their personal growth.
Welcome to Varsity Tutors! My name is Katherine, but you can call me Katie. I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Moravian College and a Master of Science in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases from the University of Pittsburgh. I have tutored throughout my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I am currently working at Drexel University College of Medicine as a Research Assistant. Our lab is predominately researching HIV.I have loved science since I watched "Outbreak" as a child. It is so fascinating that something as small as a virus or bacteria can wreck so much havoc on the body. I finish off my nerd pedigree with a love for StarTalk Radio, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and the Big Bang Theory. In my spare time I enjoy running (I've run 5 half marathons and had to recently stop training for a full marathon due to a stress fracture in my foot), hanging out with friends, and exploring Philadelphia.I like to tutor by having conversations with students. I don't pretend to have all of the answers, but together I hope to be able to work through any questions that you may have. Memorization and understanding are two different things, and the more you understand the more you'll remember!
I graduated from Moravian College in May 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Science. While at college I majored in Mathematics as it was always a subject I found equally intriguing and complex as it is rewarding. Something about solving a challenging problem seems to give you that feeling of self satisfaction and accomplishment and that is what I want my students to be able to feel as well.To me mathematics has always been so much more than just simply figuring out what a 20% tip would be on your dinner bill. I view mathematics as another way of perceiving the world. It is a subject based solely on its purity in problem solving and logic, but yet it has the ability to be evaluated through different perceptions. This is also why, when it comes to tutoring mathematics, I typically work with a student to see how they perceive a problem. To me this is way more important than simply instructing the student in the one way a tutor might know how to go about solving a problem. By taking into account the student's capabilities and understanding of a problem, I can better cater to their strengths and work with those to find a way to analyze and undertake a problem. While tutoring at college,I had a lot of success with this strategy. I was able to utilize many real world examples to help them get a better grasp of the material and even instill the knowledge and confidence. They knew the material when it came time for the quiz, and weren't so dependent on my presence and helpful hints. In addition to mathematics, I am also very passionate about exercising. I love to play and watch football and hockey, lift weights, run, and oddly enough landscape.I can assure you that I am very good at tutoring and I will always come prepared with a rehearsed knowledge of the subject being tutored and a well-mannered and friendly attitude! Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and hope you will contact me in regards to an opportunity!

I also tutor elementary math, science, reading, writing, and test prep. I pride myself on being well rounded and a strong communicator. I am passionate about empowering my students with these skills. When I'm not tutoring or teaching, you will find me acting on stage or musically directing a choir. I specialize in musical theater acting and have performed all over the country including Carnegie Hall.I am a big sports fan too, and every once in a while, I might just glue myself to the couch to watch my favorite team play (or at least put it on DVR if I'm working).I am a marathon runner, indoor soccer player, dancer, and a whole lot of other things that I am trying every day. One of the things I love about living in New York City is that if I choose to, I can experience a new activity or hobby every single day.I love tutoring, teaching, and coaching because I believe the secret to happy living is giving. I get so excited watching "light bulbs" go off when I work with my students, and it just inspires me to continue my own learning and development.I promise to give you direct yet caring feedback, and my goal is to get you to the result you're looking for as quickly as possible and to bring you to a level of understanding that's so strong, you could teach it to someone else.I don't do the work for you; I empower YOU. I graduated from Moravian College with a double major in math and political science before earning my masters degree at Lehigh University in the field of public policy. I worked as a writing tutor for three years while an undergraduate. While securing my masters degree, I worked with the United Way in researching best practices for programs aimed at helping older adults, as well as statistically evaluating performance data for programs receiving funding through the organization. I have also worked on a congressional campaign and assisted my alma maters Department of Institutional Research in appraising the colleges value relative to other liberal arts colleges across a variety of academic and financial metrics. As a child of two professors, I developed an affinity for the teaching tradition from a young age. I deeply believe that every student possesses the capacity to improve in any area, and as a tutor my sole objective is to help my tutee to do so. I like to think of tutors as catalysts, guiding students through the learning process while allowing enough room for them to develop their own skill set and walk away from a tutoring session as a more confident independent learner. Working as a writing tutor, I developed the active listening skills and aptitude for constructive criticism crucial to aiding students in any subject.I am highly proficient in mathematics and a highly proficient test taker, scoring in the 99th percentile on the GRE. I consider myself a very intuitive and systematic thinker, able to deconstruct and solve problems of any nature in an efficient and incisive manner. While test-taking can be stressful for students, it neednt be. With the right preparation, any student can learn to navigate standardized tests, and I am here to equip students with the same processes that allowed me to thrive. In my free time, I greatly enjoy listening to music and playing guitar. I am also a committed runner and an avid reader.
I am a Director at Themis Bar Prep and I have taken three bar exams. I have worked with countless tutors to perfect a strategy to help students prepare for the bar exam.
I am a certified English and ESL teacher with over eight years teaching experience. I also double-majored in Spanish in college and have spent time traveling and living throughout Latin America. I recently earned my master's degree in English from Kutztown University. I am passionate about teaching and learning English, writing, and Spanish, and I love helping students be able to understand, and hopefully even enjoy, English or Spanish.I believe we can learn so much about life from reading literature, and I work hard to help my students understand difficult texts and be able to connect to them. As a tutor, I can work at your pace to help you talk about and understand the literature you are reading and help you master even the most difficult concepts.I also have a strong commitment to teaching writing. It has been through my own experience of writing paper after paper that I have learned how arduous, but also rewarding, the writing process can be. I have a lot of experience taking students through the different stages of the writing process as well, and as a tutor am able to help you find what you want to say about your topic, develop your ideas so that you feel confident about your writing, and create your argument with conviction. It is a long and challenging process, but I love taking students through it so that at the end, they feel satisfied with their work.Just like writing, I think learning another language is a really challenging process, and it takes lots of practice. It is so exciting, though, to be able to communicate with someone in another language. I try to find the method(s) that helps my students the most with learning and mastering the concepts in language acquisition. And I'm a big believer in practice, practice, practice!I am excited about teaching and learning and hope I can help you understand, learn, and even enjoy the subjects you are working on.
