I was born and raised in West Orange, New Jersey an urban city just ten minutes east of Newark. Entering prep school at the age of thirteen was a very difficult transition for me socially; as the demographic makeup of my academic surroundings switched from the inner-city to predominately suburban. Psychology and medicine have been interests of mine since I was a senior in high school, which is why I took a position as an EMT. I began college on the track for medical school, yet I always managed to keep my interest in psychology by enrolling in at least once course each semester. This pattern continued until my sophomore year, when I changed my major to psychology and decided to pursue it wholeheartedly. Throughout my undergraduate career, I was also a varsity football player for four years, playing the position of cornerback.In the spring semester of my freshman year of college, I enrolled in a course entitled Social and Emotional Development, which was a seminal moment in fostering my interest in child psychopathology. We examined different factors that influence patterns of development in children, from birth to early adulthood. Captivated by the interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental factors, and subsequent development of or resilience against psychopathological manifestations, I began to explore future research topics of this nature.While exploring different research opportunities, I came across Mt. Hope Family Center in Rochester, NY during my senior year of college. My interest grew as I learned more about their multi-level studies examining maltreatment in children and adolescents from high-risk, low-income populations. The summer after graduation, I returned home to New Jersey and was hired as a camp counselor for males aged ten through twelve at Harbor Hills Day Camp in Mendham, NJ. This population was quite different from my subsequent experiences, as most were from wealthy families from surrounding suburban cities. Nonetheless, the experience was still valued, as it gave me further insight into the cultural differences of parenting styles in affluent populations.During the fall semester of 2011, I worked a project entitled The Me and My Family Project, and was supervised by Professor Patrick Davies. The main focus of this project was to examine why children who are exposed to high levels of family discord are at risk for developing psychological problems. The severity and chronicity of the discord, along with knowledge attained through academic courses, helped elucidate to me the robust implications associated with childhood maltreatment.In the spring semester of 2011, I was an intern on a suicide prevention program called Sources of Strength Community Research Project, which was designed to foster resiliency through supportive social relationships and networks. I was taught the importance of positive peer and adult relationships while augmenting help-seeking behaviors in adolescent-aged children. Through this position, I gained valuable insight into the feelings and cognitions of both suicidal and non-suicidal teenagers, which I would later draw upon when working with adolescents at Mt. Hope Family Center. During this time, I accepted a position as a habilitation counselor for Grace Community Services, which provides living services for individuals with mental disabilities. Through this job, I have developed the ability to work in a challenging environment with diverse individuals, while honing important interpersonal skills utilized in clinical settings, such as patience, active listening, and conflict resolution.In the summer of 2012, I was hired at Mt. Hope Family Center as a summer camp family research assistant. We conducted family recruitment visits for child participation in Mt. Hope's NIMH-funded summer camp (Child Abuse and Trauma-Related Psychopathology: Multiple Levels of Analysis). Visits were conducted both in family homes as well as at the center, and included providing a detailed description of camp, as well as allaying any logistical concerns of parents, such as time and location for pickup and drop-off. Genetics research has always been a critical aspect of summer camp, as saliva and blood samples were collected for multi-level analysis of different aspects of child and adult development, such as temperament, depression, social withdrawal, impulsivity, and mood disorders, as well as cortisol.Beginning in September of 2012, I began as a research assistant on a Study of Late Adolescent Resilience. Designed as follow-up to summer camp, this NIDA-funded research examines substance abuse in emerging adults eight years after the assessments in camp. As a multi-level study, it examines anxiety, depression, substance abuse, personality, emotion regulation, and temperament as they pertain to maltreatment. Neurocognitive assessments are used to examine attention, memory, executive planning, decision-making, risk-taking behaviors, and impulsivity. Responsibilities as research assistant were immediate, as I started on Project SOLAR from its inception. As a researcher, we were responsible for almost all aspects of study implementation, including measure and battery organization, distribution of monetary compensation, determining implementation of neurocognitive assessments, and any logistical issues of study participation. As genetics coordinator, I was responsible for implementing and improving cortisol collection protocol, as well as coordinating cortisol shipment for assay.During my time at Mt. Hope Family Center, I volunteered as a counselor for the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Therapeutic Afterschool Program. Started in 1987, the program aims to help elementary school children (aged six to eleven) reduce violent and disruptive behavior through social and emotional learning. Collaborating with other counselors was essential in in creating effective behavior regulation strategies and lesson plans. PATHS provides an open and supportive environment for children in order to foster healthy problem solving and general life skills.In order to bolster my application to graduate school, I took Kaplan's GRE prep course and enrolled in several PhD level courses at the University of Rochester, including Intro to Clinical Research Methods, Child Development and Learning in Context ages 5-12, and Psychopathology-I. In 2015, I was accepted in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at Fordham University, where I am currently enrolled. My research interests include examining outcomes for children and adolescents with maltreatment and trauma histories.Through experiences at both Fordham University and the University of Rochester, I have been equipped with the ability to be an effective tutor and educator of students of all ages and backgrounds. My psychological background has also allowed me to come in contact with a variety of populations throughout numerous situations. I am confident in my ability teach subjects at the elementary through high school level, as I have been a TA for two courses at Fordham University so far, including Foundations of Psychology and Research Methods. Most importantly, I am enthusiastic and motivated to work with young people, and have genuine passion for teaching, learning, and academia.

My higher education began at Fordham University in Bronx, New York. I attended Fordham from 1980-1984 earning a B.A. degree in English. I minored in Philosophy there as well. My education continued at CW Post University in Brookville, New York. I attended C.W. Post from 1994-1996 and earned an M.A. degree in TESOL, or more simply ESL, Teacher of English as a Second Language. During the twelve years between my undergraduate and graduate work I was a rock and roll musician and songwriter in a group called "The Chilly Dogs." My group released an album in 1987 and we toured The United States and Canada in support of the record. After The Chilly Dogs broke up in 1990, I joined a Lithuanian Polka Band called "She and the Three Amber Men," and I got to tour Lithuania, Australia, and The United States with this group. I also recorded an album with an artist called "Paleface" in 1993 and it did not sell many copies, so I decided to become a teacher as I always loved working with kids. I decided to become an ESL teacher because I myself spoke only Lithuanian when I entered kindergarten in 1967, when there was no such thing as ESL in schools yet. I got teased and harassed some by the kids that were fluent in English, and it wasn't a fun time for me for a few years until I learned English.I got my first teaching job at The New York City Dept. of Education in December of 1995 as an ESL teacher. I taught ESL for the next nineteen years not only in school. Many of the newly arrived kids knew very little or no English at all and their parents often asked me if I could tutor their kids privately after or before school, sometimes even on the weekends. Many of the newly arrived parents of the kids I was teaching also asked me to tutor them in English. I really loved my job because I felt that I was a very important part of the newly arrived students' and their parents lives. When I got to tutor I felt that I was getting closer to my kids than teachers of other subjects would. I also didn't only tutor my kids in ESL. They came to my class for ESL once or twice a day and then had to go to their other four "core" subject classes, Science, Math, Social Studies, and English. I had to find out from the other teachers how my kids were doing in their other classes, and then I had to decide how I could best help them with those classes while they were in my class. I got interested in the other subjects the kids were taking and learned a lot about them.I am able to tutor in at least ESL and the four "core" subjects my kids took and did so. I really don't have a favorite subject to tutor and don't want to sound arrogant, but I am interested in basically anything from A stronauts to Z ebras and once I get interested in some new subject, my mother was a librarian, and she can still get me books on any subject I become interested in. My dad was the Head of Engineering at Grumman and is now an inventor, and whenever I go over my parents' house I find that he can shut my car off from inside the house, and I don't know what he's exactly up to now, but my phone doesn't work anywhere near my house and he won't tell me why. He has told me that since he worked at Grumman he has had top secret clearance. Recently I punched in my last name, "Janusas" into Google, and up came a photo of a UFO in a newspaper from Brazil called "The Janusas Photo." You can try it yourselves, and you'll see what I saw. I actually printed out the article I accidentally "Googled" and made copies of it for my ESL kids for a lesson. They were extremely interested in what was written there, with my last name there, and I was quite amazed that my slightly above beginner level students were so interested in the picture and the article that all I basically had to do during that class was sit back and watch them all become team players, getting into a big group on their own. They were gleaning English words they knew from each other and after twenty minutes were able to give me a summary in English of what this advanced adult article was about.That sums up my teaching/tutoring style. The kids are just like me...If they become really fascinated and challenged by something, I feel like my job is almost done. I may have to guide or help the students or student some, but if this becomes the case, both the student and teacher are reaching their maximum potential. This kind of interest is what I strive for every time a have to put a lesson together and teach or tutor.

I am excited to be a tutor for Varsity Tutors. I have a Biology/Spanish degree from Fordham University and have since worked as a New York City high school Biology teacher as well as in biological research. In addition to running and exploring the city in my spare time, I am a mentor for a New York City program that boasts 100% college acceptance rate for participating students. In high school, I received scores on my PSAT/SAT that helped me get into a great college and earn a full-tuition National Merit Scholarship. Through that process, I learned many tricks to raise standardized test scores and to really use the results to my best advantage. I also like to help students with all subjects and in particular, Science, Math, Writing, Regents exams, high school entrance exams, and PSAT/SAT. As a teacher, I understood first hand that everyone learns in different ways and at different ability levels, but every student can achieve at their best when they receive personalized instruction tailored to their needs and interests. As a tutor, I hope to help students throughout the city understand how they can best perform in school and on tests to achieve their academic and personal goals.

I am certified to teach ESL in New York State (K-12) and received my Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) through Fordham University. As a NYC Public School teacher for 6 years, and as a private tutor in South Korea, I have experience instructing elementary, middle school, and high school students, as well as adults, to reach their academic goals. Additionally, I have taught test preparation for the SAT, PSAT, SHSAT, NYS ELA Regents, NYSESLAT exams, and more.I specialize in increasing the literacy skills of all learners through vocabulary building, step-by-step approaches and inquiry. I use direct teaching, video, audio, PowerPoints, and even props to demonstrate concepts. I have been teaching young students for two years, while in grad school at Columbia University, studying early childhood education. Before starting grad school, I went to Fordham University where I mentored and worked with young students in many different settings. I am an experienced teacher and a tutor. My Bachelors Degree was in Teaching English and I also have MBA in Finance from Fordham University School of Business. I have more than 10 years of teaching experience and for the past three years I have worked as a private tutor. I find teaching extremely rewarding, especially right now, during pandemic where thousands of children and adults have suffered from a learning loss. I originally began college with intent of pursing a degree in Mathematics but quickly decided to dual-major in Mathematics and Economics in order to explore practical applications. While I continued my studies in liberal arts, slowly but surely I developed a passion for finance which guided me beginning my career at a multi-family office advising clients in portfolio management. While working in a number of roles through my 20s, I attained my CFA Charter. It would be my pleasure to work with you on any math, econ or financial endeavors towards the pursuit of your goals.

I am passionate about helping students build confidence in their academic abilities, especially when learning feels overwhelming. As someone with ADHD, a processing disorder, and testing anxiety, I understand the challenges many students face in the classroom. I also understand the growth that comes from developing effective strategies and learning how to adapt. I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, and viewing mistakes as part of the learning process. I believe problem-solving is a critical life skill that extends beyond any single subject. My goal is not only to improve academic performance, but to help students recognize their own resilience, capability, and potential.
