I am a Biology major with a strong passion for making learning feel approachable and stress-free. I understand that students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions and building understanding step by step, rather than feeling rushed or pressured. My tutoring style focuses on slowing things down and breaking concepts into clear, manageable parts. I believe confidence grows when students are given space to think, make mistakes, and gradually connect ideas. Instead of memorization alone, I aim to help students understand the "why" behind the material so they can apply it independently. I'm especially motivated to support students who may feel overwhelmed or discouraged in subjects like math and science. My goal is to create a supportive environment where learning feels structured but calm, and where students can steadily improve at their own pace.

I like to approach everything in life with multiple perspectives because it is the best way to grow and understand. I try to bring this way of thinking to my students because there are so many different ways to get to the same answer. In my spare time, I like to sew, read and write, and attend concerts.

I have spent a huge portion of my life in education, both pursuing it and dispensing it. I have a B.S. in Environmental Science from Drexel University, and a M.S. in Environmental Science from Stockton University. I first started working as a tutor in 2012, when I tutored students in writing at Drexel, and went on to work as a tutor in a wider variety of subjects - environmental science, biology, writing, European and U.S. History, and other social studies courses- for students ranging from middle school through college. I am currently working as a lab instructor at Temple University, where I teach both underclass and upperclass biology courses.I aim to make learning fun and take pride in engaging my students on the topic of the day, even when it's something they may not be as passionate about. I work hard to engage my students, and try to approach the material from an angle that will draw them in. I am comfortable in group settings, or one-on-one, either in person or virtually, and like to tailor my sessions to the individual needs of the student - whether they need help understanding the material, with strategies for studying, or even just with motivation. I have a good deal of experience working with students who are studying for the AP exams, and have many strategies for studying for them (especially for those students who don't like to study!).

I started as a pre-med major at Pomona College. However, the academic success I achieved in high school did not translate I had to relearn how to approach academics. A large influence on my change was my experience with Building Leaders on Campus (BLOC), an organization predominantly comprised of men of color to develop our leadership potential. This organization developed me as a leader and gave me a foundation for understanding what it takes to lead a team. I started this organization as a freshman, and devoted a large amount of my time to it by fundraising, organizing diversity-centered events and developing it into a self-sustaining entity that comprises at least thirty students every year. This was my first opportunity to act as a conduit helping people in my community learn more about taking care of themselves. I helped build a safe space for students who felt marginalized and silenced. Like the way I wanted to help people in my community with their health issues. It gave me the leadership and interpersonal skills needed to become a physician.I entered a rigorous graduate program to become a more competitive applicant. While in school I volunteered at the Ronald McDonald house also while working 20 hours a week as a server and 20-30 hours a week performing research. This taught me how manage my time well like how I would need to in medical school. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House allows me to experience numerous disparities firsthand and to build a personal connection with families whose child is undergoing long term care. This is the difference between treating the symptoms and considering the factors that may cause them like ethnicity, environment, and socioeconomic status. This work I can bridge the gap between treating a patient and treating the person. It allows me to see a side of healthcare that I feel is missed.Pomona's interdisciplinary approach gave me the opportunity to learn about the sociological determinants of health, about how disconnects between doctors and their patients are anything but rare, and about how these disconnects can be improved through cultural competency. This mixed with the leadership skills I gained with BLOC fueled my desire to become a physician. By combining these skills with the understanding that I gained from my coursework of the sociological structures that influence health outcomes in those same communities, I will be a leader in my community who will educate others. I want to communicate between the unaware and the informed to decrease these disconnects in my future community. In the future, I would like to work in a hospital that caters to low socioeconomic populations, much like Ben Taub hospital, and volunteer at free clinics. I would like to influence medicine so that I will be able to cater to communities like my own and improve health outcomes among minorities. I am drawn to primary care because it will allow me to bridge disconnects between underserved communities, patients, like Guillermo, and their doctors. I am confident that my ability to communicate empathetically with people from various backgrounds will be beneficial in an intensive care setting. I am excited to dedicate myself to a career as a physician serving the underserved, eagerly awaiting the opportunities and challenges ahead.

I received my PhD in mathematics from Drexel University in 2019. I really enjoyed teaching as a graduate student, and working as a tutor here seems like a nice way to get back into it. Before graduate school, I went to Johns Hopkins. I started out as a "chemical and biomolecular engineering" major, but then ended up switching to a double major in math and electrical engineering. I graduated with a BA in math and MS in electrical engineering. From there, I went to Drexel University to write and defend my dissertation in mathematics, which was about two unsolved problems in linear algebra. While in Johns Hopkins and Drexel University, I ended up teaching a lot of math and a bit of science not only as a tutor, but also as a teaching assistant and as a primary instructor. Since then, I've been working as a mathematician; I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Free University of Brussels for one year, and then as a research scientist at the Air Force Research Lab in Dayton, Ohio for two years. It's been a rewarding career, but I have missed teaching. When it comes to teaching, I try my best to take a flexible approach and meet students where they are. I am a big believer in the power of intuition and curiosity, so I try to teach in a way that nurtures both. I find that it is important not only to know how to get from problem statement to solution, but also to have some understanding of why the pieces fit together the way they do. Besides math and teaching, I enjoy singing, playing piano, playing online chess, and doing the New York Times crossword (and other word games). Lately, I've been trying to get back into running and yoga.

I really care about each student I tutor and I believe that every student has the ability to succeed if they are dedicated.I usually only tutor one or two students at a time because then I have enough time to give each student the attention they deserve and I prepare extensively for each tutoring session so they are as productive as possible. My previous students have received A's in difficult engineering courses such as thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and fluid dynamics. As a Ph.D. student, I am constantly confronted with challenging engineering and science problems which require critical problem solving and I try to help students with develop this same type of intellectual autonomy which is usually neglected in large classrooms. Besides helping students develop to their full potential I also often help students with academic planning to get the most out of their college or high school experience. I have also received numerous scholarships and fellowships and can help you apply for these as well.Best Regards,Serge S.

I loved my college experience and want to show high school students that with practice and diligence, they too can perform well on standardized tests and go on to the university of their choosing. To accomplish academic goals at any level, it is important for the student to have fun while learning! I personalize my teaching approach to fit the student's learning style so that he or she can easily transition from learning a concept to applying it to a given problem. Hi! I'm Sophie, and I'm a medical student with a passion for teaching. I want to work with patients, but my other goal is to go into academic medicine. I can't picture my present or future without education in it. I began tutoring for my little sister when both of us were in high school, helping her with math, English, science, and Spanish. In college, I started branching out to tutor friends. In 2019 I began volunteer tutoring for my college's chemistry department, and soon after, I took on a job at a local tutoring center teaching biology and chemistry (and occasionally physics and math) to high school students. Since taking the MCAT and scoring 99th percentile, I started tutoring for that as well. Biology and chemistry are my main teaching areas: chemistry because I've had the most tutoring experience in it, and biology because I have practical experience through lab research and patient care. I can also teach math or physics (I used to be an engineering student so I know those subjects well). I pride myself on bringing a real passion for the subjects I teach. I also strive to abolish simple; disjointed memorization and help my students see their subject matter through a logical, problem-solving oriented lens. I look forward to learning with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from Drexel University bring both academic expertise and real-world experience. Many have completed rigorous coursework in their subject areas and have navigated Drexel's cooperative education program, which emphasizes practical application alongside theoretical knowledge. This combination means they understand not just what to teach, but how to connect concepts to real-world problem-solving—a valuable perspective when explaining complex material to students.

Learning from someone with Drexel experience offers a unique advantage: they've already mastered the material you're working to understand, and they can share strategies that worked for them in rigorous coursework. Drexel's emphasis on hands-on learning and co-op experiences means these tutors often bring practical examples and problem-solving approaches that go beyond textbook explanations. They can also provide insight into how different subjects connect to real career applications, which helps contextualize why you're learning something in the first place.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors from Drexel's diverse academic programs, including engineering, business, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and more. Many also excel in test prep for the SAT, ACT, and GRE—areas where strong foundational knowledge is essential. Because Drexel emphasizes technical and professional fields, you'll find particularly strong expertise in STEM subjects and business-related coursework, though tutors are available across many academic disciplines.

Drexel's cooperative education program requires students to complete multiple internships alongside their studies, giving tutors real-world experience in their fields. This means they've applied what they learned in the classroom to actual job settings and projects. When you're struggling with a concept, a tutor with co-op experience can explain not just how to solve a problem, but why it matters in professional contexts—something that can deepen understanding and motivation, especially if you're working toward a specific career path.

Yes. Drexel's curriculum is known for academic rigor, particularly in engineering, mathematics, and sciences. Tutors who have completed these programs are well-equipped to help with challenging upper-level courses, technical subjects, and problem-intensive material. Whether you're working through calculus, organic chemistry, computer science fundamentals, or any other demanding subject, connecting with a tutor who has successfully completed similar coursework at Drexel provides confidence that they can guide you through complex concepts.

While textbooks and online resources present information the same way to everyone, personalized 1-on-1 instruction adapts to how you learn. A tutor from Drexel can identify gaps in your understanding, adjust pacing, and focus on exactly what you need—whether that's filling in foundational knowledge or diving deeper into advanced topics. Research in educational psychology shows that 1-on-1 instruction significantly outpaces traditional classroom learning, and having a tutor who understands rigorous coursework firsthand means they can explain material in multiple ways until it clicks for you.

Varsity Tutors makes it easy to find a tutor with the background you're looking for. During the matching process, you can specify that you'd like to work with someone who attended or graduated from Drexel University, and we'll connect you with a qualified tutor who meets your needs. You can then start personalized 1-on-1 instruction tailored to your goals—whether you're working to improve grades, prepare for a standardized test, or build confidence in a challenging subject.
