Let's face it: Math can be tough. So why not make it easier with a personal tutor there help explain the hard things?I have over 5 years of private and group tutoring in all math levels from middle school to high school. I have helped students with Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Trigonometry, and Calculus, as well as test prep for the SAT. In that time period, I have had the opportunity to work with dozens of students with different backgrounds, skill levels, and learning styles. As much as tutoring helps the student, it also helps me. My instruction incorporates the best techniques and explanations that I have found most effective over the years.I believe there are two critical ingredients needed to conquer any math issues. The first, is the quality of the tutor. Without a doubt, many people can teach you how to do a math problem, but not everyone can help explain it in such a way that you understand it and can apply the knowledge to future problems. The second important ingredient to successful learning is a positive attitude by the student. When tackling tough math problems, many students begin to feel overwhelmed by the material. I make sure to teach the material at a level the student can understand before progressing to more difficult problems. I have found that this approach allows the student to build up their confidence in the material, which directly translates into a willingness to learn and work hard.In addition, I highly value communication during the tutoring process. This involves keeping parents updated with how lessons are progressing and what was covered and could also include reaching out to school teachers to learn more about the material being covered. This also allows both the student and parents to give me feedback if a certain style of teaching helped a lot or not as much. A big support system around the student is incredibly important to creating a productive environment.I love seeing that aha moment on students faces, and Id love to see one on yours! I encourage you to reach out if you not only want to meet your goals, but exceed them. I look forward to hearing from you.

During my time at Drexel University, I worked as a teaching assistant for a graduate level Anatomy course for a year. Although I am very passionate about learning, I make sure all my students have fun. During a typical tutoring session, I try to incorporate videos, textbooks, and models to help the student stay engaged. I make my sessions interactive in hopes of creating an environment where students can learn the material in a style that is most effective for them. In addition to Anatomy, I also tutor Physiology, Biology, General Chemistry, Physics, and elementary math. When I am not working as a tutor I love to travel, play music, and spend time with my friends.

I strive to embody these traits and qualities every day in order to become a great teacher.

Hi! I'm Sophie, and I'm a medical student with a passion for teaching. I want to work with patients, but my other goal is to go into academic medicine. I can't picture my present or future without education in it. I began tutoring for my little sister when both of us were in high school, helping her with math, English, science, and Spanish. In college, I started branching out to tutor friends. In 2019 I began volunteer tutoring for my college's chemistry department, and soon after, I took on a job at a local tutoring center teaching biology and chemistry (and occasionally physics and math) to high school students. Since taking the MCAT and scoring 99th percentile, I started tutoring for that as well. Biology and chemistry are my main teaching areas: chemistry because I've had the most tutoring experience in it, and biology because I have practical experience through lab research and patient care. I can also teach math or physics (I used to be an engineering student so I know those subjects well). I pride myself on bringing a real passion for the subjects I teach. I also strive to abolish simple; disjointed memorization and help my students see their subject matter through a logical, problem-solving oriented lens. I look forward to learning with you!

I have been tutoring middle school, high school and college students in Chicago through Varsity Tutors since November 2014. My own passion for math and science and my academic history of them has resulted in a focus in tutoring within these subjects. Of these, my favorite topics to tutor are Algebra and Chemistry, as they both have discernible patterns within the material which leads to a better understanding as one builds new topics on previous ones. I have found that students have the most success in first reviewing basic concepts to assess and address where they are having difficulty, followed by continuous problem-solving to reinforce the concepts and strategies until they become second nature. Like the subjects that I teach, I believe that education is an ongoing and ever-growing component that is necessary for a happy and fulfilling life, and that there is always something new to learn each and every day. In my spare time, I like to exercise, volunteer, play basketball, go snowboarding, watch sports (mainly football and soccer) or play video games.

Hey! I bet I can help you. I am generally laid back in my approach to teaching and strongly believe that EVERYONE can succeed in math and science. The nice thing about these subjects is that there is a right answer and there is always a way to get to it.About my styleI love when students have questions. It will help me to help you. I remember hating when my teachers didn't take the time in class to explain the answers to my questions and I promise that whether you want the long or short answer I will give it to you or research it until I can. If you decide to set up sessions with me, it will be a discussion and an interactive learning process (you get lectured enough in class). When solving problems, I like to guide students to the answer without giving it to them; I have always found this to be the best way to learn. I can also provide full solutions when it comes time to study for that big test.My backgroundI am a graduating senior completing both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the accelerated Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics program at Drexel University. In addition, I have completed all of the pre-medicine coursework requirements. I am a member of the Pennoni Honors College and an officer in Pi Tau Sigma, the International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society. Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who attended or graduated from Drexel University bring both academic expertise and real-world experience. Many have completed rigorous coursework in their subject areas and have navigated Drexel's cooperative education program, which emphasizes practical application alongside theoretical knowledge. This combination means they understand not just what to teach, but how to connect concepts to real-world problem-solving—a valuable perspective when explaining complex material to students.

Learning from someone with Drexel experience offers a unique advantage: they've already mastered the material you're working to understand, and they can share strategies that worked for them in rigorous coursework. Drexel's emphasis on hands-on learning and co-op experiences means these tutors often bring practical examples and problem-solving approaches that go beyond textbook explanations. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors from Drexel's diverse academic programs, including engineering, business, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and more. Many also excel in test prep for the SAT, ACT, and GRE—areas where strong foundational knowledge is essential. Because Drexel emphasizes technical and professional fields, you'll find particularly strong expertise in STEM subjects and business-related coursework, though tutors are available across many academic disciplines.

Drexel's cooperative education program requires students to complete multiple internships alongside their studies, giving tutors real-world experience in their fields. This means they've applied what they learned in the classroom to actual job settings and projects. When you're struggling with a concept, a tutor with co-op experience can explain not just how to solve a problem, but why it matters in professional contexts—something that can deepen understanding and motivation, especially if you're working toward a specific career path.

Yes. Drexel's curriculum is known for academic rigor, particularly in engineering, mathematics, and sciences. Tutors who have completed these programs are well-equipped to help with challenging upper-level courses, technical subjects, and problem-intensive material. Whether you're working through calculus, organic chemistry, computer science fundamentals, or any other demanding subject, connecting with a tutor who has successfully completed similar coursework at Drexel provides confidence that they can guide you through complex concepts.

While textbooks and online resources present information the same way to everyone, personalized 1-on-1 instruction adapts to how you learn. A tutor from Drexel can identify gaps in your understanding, adjust pacing, and focus on exactly what you need—whether that's filling in foundational knowledge or diving deeper into advanced topics. Research in educational psychology shows that 1-on-1 instruction significantly outpaces traditional classroom learning, and having a tutor who understands rigorous coursework firsthand means they can explain material in multiple ways until it clicks for you.

Varsity Tutors makes it easy to find a tutor with the background you're looking for. During the matching process, you can specify that you'd like to work with someone who attended or graduated from Drexel University, and we'll connect you with a qualified tutor who meets your needs. You can then start personalized 1-on-1 instruction tailored to your goals—whether you're working to improve grades, prepare for a standardized test, or build confidence in a challenging subject.
