I've always had a passion for teaching, but it originally started as a passion for learning. I wanted to take every bit of information I could get my hands on and be able to understand it as well as use it in my daily life. Over time I gravitated to the topics that interested me the most, but still maintained an interest in the process of learning something new. My experience as a mentor, tutor, teaching assistant and college athlete has allowed me to work with students that exhibit many different learning styles. Through my approach and focusing on how students learn, I've been able to help students push themselves to new levels academically through taking the time to find what works best for them. Our students deserve the time and attention required to make sure they not only learn the information but also how to apply it. As a tutor it is my duty to work with students to get them to their goals and I can't wait to help you all achieve success.

I also love teaching writing. I enjoy working with students from a wide variety of age levels and educational backgrounds. While the rules governing grammar, usage, and essay construction may appear challenging for many, I believe that, with effort and guidance, anyone can learn to write well. I enjoy helping students acquire the skills that will allow them to express themselves clearly and fluidly.I take a similar approach to teaching reading, literature, and math. When working with students, I do all I can do demystify the process of learning a subject, working with them to uncover its inner logic and obtain the tools and knowledge they need to succeed as students. Finally, I think that learning is fun. I communicate that sense of enthusiasm to my students, so that they will be encouraged to exert the effort and focus necessary to achieve mastery over a subject. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, going to see theater, trying new restaurants, and exploring Boston.
I graduated from Carleton College in the spring of 2020 with a degree in Political Science. For the past two years I've interned for a literary magazine called the Chicago Quarterly Review, considering story submissions and writing reader reports for the senior editor. Although currently living in Sag Harbor, I am in the process of applying to law school, with the goal of becoming either an attorney or a law professor. In my four years at Carleton, I tutored sixth graders in reading and math through the Northfield Tackling Obstacles and Raising College Hopes program (TORCH). I greatly enjoyed this experience, as I discovered my love of teaching. I tutor students of all ages in reading, math, government, and chess. In my sessions, I strive to encourage young people to arrive at ideas and solutions to problems themselves, with an emphasis on instilling habits of critical thinking and open-mindedness.Outside of academic pursuits, I have a love for blues guitar (Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are my favorites), chess, and old movies.
I fell in love with Biology when I first took AP biology in high school and went on to major in Biology at Carleton College where I got my B.A. In college, I first began tutoring local high school students in AP biology and found joy sharing my love and knowledge of biological systems. From high school throughout college I have studied French, and lived in Paris with a host family for a summer and would love to help beginning or intermediate French students with grammar or conversation. After graduating, I worked as an AmeriCorps tutor at an elementary school in Boston and primarily tutored in math and reading. I am a graduate of The Brearley School and Juilliard Pre-College, as well as a current student at Carleton College where I am studying Anthropology and Archaeology. I have previous tutoring experience in both essay writing/editing and SAT verbal. The subjects I am most passionate about are History, English, Creative Writing, and Literature. I truly love everything related to history, and am constantly reading and learning about the subject on my own time. I strongly believe that a student's best work is done in an environment where they feel they can ask questions and learn at their own pace.
Hello! My name is Jon, and I can't wait to share my enthusiasm and years of tutoring experience with your student. Although my favorite subject is physics, I have enjoyed working with elementary school through college age students in a wide range of subjects. As my BA hints, I have earned a liberal arts education at a rigorous and stimulating institution, where critical thinking is the first priority. I believe your student will benefit as I have from learning how to approach any problem. This flexibility is, in my opinion, much more useful than memorizing superficial solution procedures often taught in schools. Let's get to work!
I have experience mentoring young and mature adults in reading and writing skills. As a New York public school teacher, I taught reading comprehension and writing skills to South Bronx high school students at The Metropolitan High School. I have contributed to the above average ELA Regents pass rate at my high school through assignments developed to build confidence in reading and writing skills. I also helped develop a college prep course focused on the skills required to improve career decision-making and scores of college entrance assessments. As a production manager for ten years, I also have experience mentoring clients of small publishers and printing companies as they prepared their texts for print production in a global marketplace. My experience in public school teaching and in copy editing and proofreading helps me teach students the reading and writing skills required in academic and business communication.Data from students’ written work and assessments helps me plan curriculum that increases understanding of basic reading and writing mechanics. I use graphic organizers to help students analyze literary and informational texts. When possible, I incorporate technology in classroom presentations to modify instruction for learning modalities.
I am passionate about helping students when they are feeling stuck or frustrated, especially in math classes. For 2 years, I have tutored Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. I have found it is most helpful to reteach concepts in a setting where students can ask questions along the way. When students feel comfortable asking for help and can work through adversity, they are better able to succeed in the classroom and learn valuable problem-solving skills they can use in the future.
I have a passion for helping students reach their full potential. My extensive chemistry tutoring experience has given me a host of tools to help students work through complex technical problems!
My passion for tutoring stems from my experience as a TA, where I discovered that effective teaching goes beyond just delivering content; it's about building relationships and instilling confidence in students. With over two years of tutoring experience in math and computer science, I focus on fostering an interactive learning environment where students actively engage with the material. I believe in the power of practice over passive learning, guiding students to identify their challenges and develop effective study habits. As a National Merit Scholar, I've honed my own test-taking strategies, which I enjoy sharing for SAT prep as well. I'm excited to support you on your academic journey!
