Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Geoffrey in Las Vegas, NV
The student and I talked about organizing his binder today. Since the timing was a bit off from last time, we were not prepared to spend much time diving in to organizing the binder, but we will be doing that on Friday. Instead, we reviewed some of our old study skills concepts (goal setting, learning styles, backwards planning) and spent some time reviewing math concepts like finding angles on vertical angles and creating equations from word problems. Last, we ran lines for his upcoming play. He shared that he received an 86 on his last Language Arts quiz, which is a win. He seems compliant but not joyful when it comes to his weekly planner. We will continue working on making this a necessary and worthwhile habit!

Today the student and I talked about his day at school, which was particularly eventful especially in his physics class where his teacher did a number of elaborate demonstrations of various physics concepts. He told me that he took his test on Tuesday and that today, he took a quiz in trigonometry. He got the highest test grade since the first quarter of this school year on his test (60% before the curve), which is an accomplishment we celebrated! He felt very confident about how he did on the quiz and we discussed the problems he could remember-- based on the fact that he has been acing the problems on the homework, I don't doubt his comprehension of the concepts and performance on the quiz. He brought with him a final packet for readings, which he nearly completed by the end of our session.

The student worked from the assessment exam packet. We emphasized his time management while working the problems. There were a few problems that he did not understand, so we took our time at the end of the session to go over those problems. He is doing very well. Next Monday, he will take a timed test as a practice.

We had another good session today. He was focused on making up his work. We spent the whole session on the assignment but planned out the rest of his work for the week as well as our plan for Tuesday.

I reviewed and suggested test prep strategies for the student's chemistry class. This included using a website to create practice quizzes for the semester to study. We used concept maps to rewrite notes and key concepts for quick review. I asked her to talk to her teacher/counselor about what she can do to prepare better for her tests. I suggested she review a chunk of content each day for 15 minutes since she needs to review the entire semester of chemistry for each test. She agreed to try at least two of the suggested strategies. Her test performance did improve from last week, but she still would like to do better.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Alexander in Las Vegas, NV
The student is getting pretty good grades, but he is ambitious and wants to come up with strategies to make them even better. We are targeting English, geography, and biology as classes in which he can improve. I am encouraging him to try thinking about essay writing in new ways and to experiment with different ways of organizing his thoughts. We worked on note taking while reading for geography and biology. The student is bright and seems committed to improving his grades. I also encouraged him to think about why he wants to improve and what his goals are for his grades.
