Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Abigail in Cary, NC
Today the student and I wrapped up our unit on the study process by reviewing strategies for learning topics in her outline that she has a harder time "sticking" in her head (e.g. knowing which topics need constant repetition vs. which topics need practice questions and deeper understanding). Based on the process she did for math, she developed a detailed study plan for her English midterm, and is going to outline half the material in the next week. We spent the remainder of the session on a question she brought about a new concept in math class. She did a great job using our time to really be useful to her.

The student said he felt good about his test on Thursday. We briefly talked about some of the new nuances of notation and rate of change. We then began work on his social studies and science homework. His civics work reviewed the Articles of the Constitution and the powers of the governor of his state. I quizzed him on the powers established by the first 3 Articles of the Constitution, and he quickly completed his homework on this topic. I encouraged him to make an outline for a writing assignment of his and to make examples for each point in the outline.

We mostly discussed the student's Social Psych reading for tomorrow. She has a good handle on the central points of what she's read so far. Next session, we'll talk about how the class discussion went and see if we can make progress on figuring out what the teacher is intending people to get out of the text.

We reviewed for the student's upcoming math test, which will be coming up this Friday. It covered squares and cubes, sq rts, and cube rts. He seems to be well-versed in every math topic but stumbles a little with basic multiplication with decimals. He also said long division was difficult for him, so we focused on those concepts within the test review. I also showed him some shortcuts to test the accuracy of an answer. I left him with more test review and long division to work on.

We discussed how the student should organize her ELA and math binder. I also reviewed factoring polynomials as well as some basic factoring rules (e.g., how to tell if something is divisible by three). We also discussed some novels she might enjoy reading in her spare time. Next week, I'd like to see a copy of her grades so we can start going over academic skills.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Andrea in Cary, NC
The student covered his Latin homework for both Monday and Wednesday night. He did very well when I tested him on the culture material. He completed his other social studies homework and turned that in. He fully developed his thoughts about the critical thinking question by himself without much prompting. I also briefly went over his math and science material for his quizzes tomorrow. He knew both of them very well.
