Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Bishoy in Ann Arbor, MI
We went over student's essays today, highlighting elements of essay structure we talked about last time - introduction from general/background info to specific main ideas, body paragraphs, and conclusion. We talked about lending own voice/explanation to the supporting details in the body paragraphs and looking for links between supporting details, as well as introducing each main idea in the first sentence of the body paragraph. We talked about methods to write the concluding paragraph - either posing an original question and answering it, or introducing a counterpoint to one of the main ideas and demonstrating why it wouldn't work in the context of the essay's contents. We also talked about how to write an attention grabber for more specific essay prompts, and talked through one example like this - I told him to look for dichotomies or contrasting ideas that he can pose in the opening sentence of the introductory paragraph. We then spent the rest of the session going over the student's assignment of picking out literary element from "The Odyssey," clarifying parallel structure vs repetition.

The student and I met up to see how the first week of her schedule we created worked for her. She likes the schedule but needs reminders to keep her on task; so we worked on entering the reminders into her calendar and I showed her how to do this and set reminder alerts. We also discussed how nights before exams she should go stay with her grandmother nearby to help her stay focused.

The student had a math test coming up this week on circles and circle angles, tangents, and chords, which we practiced by reviewing her assigned math homework. The student wrote a lovely reflection essay using the outline of Eli Wiesel's 'Night' that we worked on the week before, and I am hopeful that she will score very well on the essay when she gets it back!

I met with the student today to continue our work on his upcoming history essay. We discussed his work on finding sources and his initial work on reading those sources and gathering his research. We have agreed to finish this Sunday and to begin looking at all of his research as a whole in order to pull out the major themes and arguments around which he will organize his essay. The student and I also spent some time discussing his weekly schedule. I hope this allows him the extra time to get through the research phase of his history essay so we can hit the ground running on Sunday.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Meredith in Ann Arbor, MI
The student has been doing an excellent job keeping her planner organized. Her current system has been working very well for her and she has not fallen behind this quarter. Her weekly planner has been harder to work with so we found a better place for her to place it. We also planned out some of her focus activities for the weeks. We finished the session by trying to finish some projects from her planner.
