SSAT Tutoring review by Dana in Portland, OR
The student and I began our session today by reviewing her homework. She indicated that the reading comprehension section was easier for her, but she had a lot of difficulty with the analogies. We spent a large chunk of time reviewing her homework and clarifying anything she did not understand. The student does a great job at identifying the main idea of the passage.

SSAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Portland, OR
For this session the student took a practice reading section for the first time so she could see how quickly the test would go. This also helped us to gauge how quickly she was reading for the test and give us ideas on strategies that could be implemented for her during testing that would help her to read more effectively so that she can finish her sections in full. After going through different strategies I asked that before we meet next time she take another practice test in her study guide book so that she can practice the strategies we used. During our session she completed 34/40 questions in 40 minutes (a very good pace for her first practice test) and we are hoping to improve on that using the strategies before next week's session.

SSAT Tutoring review by Channing in Portland, OR
We reviewed various questions from the verbal and quantitative sections of her diagnostic. From verbal, we covered techniques (roots/similar words and word charge) to apply when she encounters an unfamiliar word. She also learned how to make and use sentence bridges for analogies. Regarding math, we focused on unknown but imperative vocabulary (consecutive, average, reciprocal, etc.).

SSAT Tutoring review by Tara in Portland, OR
The student and I looked over the verbal section of his practice test. We started going over vocabulary and made a list of words to put on notecards. We also discussed strategies for approaching the verbal section- specifically the antonym/synonym section. We went over how to use prefixes and word roots as clues for unfamiliar words. I stressed the importance of skipping a problem if he could not eliminate any answers (I briefly went over the scoring process and the concept that some of the problems would be at a 7th or 8th grade level). I gave him a list of prefixes to look up and start studying as well as a vocabulary list to start developing. I also explained the essay prompt and assigned him the practice essay to complete.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ginger in Portland, OR
The student and I started off by doing a fast-paced arithmetic review. I had her do sample problems of fraction, decimal, and whole number operations, along with conversions between fractions and mixed numbers and fractions and decimals. We then took a break to go over strategies for the synonym and the analogy sections. I typed out strategies and tips for her, and we practiced 10 questions each of those sections. After that, we returned to math, where I taught her how to split up square roots and how to combine exponents in multiplication and division.
