Session Summaries by Social Studies Tutors

Social Studies Tutoring review by Shawn in Miami, FL
During our first session, we spent some time discussing the student's case and needs. When I sat down to work with him, we agreed to rewrite a paper discussing the purpose of government. The case provided indicated a hypothetical country was collapsing, and we were to make the case for the continuance of government. We later reviewed a sheet in which a number of statements were made and the student was required to determine whether the statements were typical of a totalitarian or a democratic government.

The student and I met Thursday evening in preparation for his next AP Government/ Politics test. This exam covered the two chapters for which I'd previously helped him prepare for, as well as two more. He had received a study guide, and we spent the session working through it, trying to get all his information organized in the same place. I worked through each study-guide question with him in great detail. Using Word, we created a sort of guide to the guide, wherein for each question, I helped him find the relevant page numbers in the textbook, highlighted the key information pertaining to that topic, and then wrote out a preview (in Word) of what he'd need to know and cover to succeed with that topic. Essentially, this document served as a blueprint for his study guide, with some of the gaps to be filled in on his own time, through his own textbook perusal and in-class work. During the next two days, he will be in a position to fill in those gaps via class lectures, then we'll meet and put it all together, with me being sure to quiz him thoroughly on all parts of it. While scanning the textbook, I routinely pointed out to him how important information was found in the topic paragraphs of a section and within individual topic sentences -- a cognitive element of the reading comprehension skills we'd worked on throughout the previous semester. I also revisited another idea from that time -- context -- to emphasize the importance of being able to discuss the topics in detail -- to be able to provide examples, historical frameworks, etc. -- not just to be able to list and define. We'll resume work on this on Monday, and perhaps briefly on Sunday, knowing this time that we also need to expand our focus beyond the study guide.

The student and I spent the entire session discussing her final project in Asian history which is to explain an insight she gained from each country that they studied as a class. This is the realm in which I think I am the most valuable to her, as we were able to bounce ideas off of each other and really get to the pith of her ideas, which, though very nuanced and original, can be sporadic and lack focus.

Tonight, the student and I finished her DBQ paper. We went through her work paragraph by paragraph editing and condensing together. We practiced writing strong sentences that make her point quickly and clearly. She made a lot of progress, and I'm excited to see what grade she gets on her paper!

Social Studies Tutoring review by Michael in Miami, FL
We started with a grade check, and the student's grades going into the final look good. We then spent time working on study guides for English and Science. In English, we reviewed The Odyssey and Night. He knows the major themes and plot points and just needed some review on the details. In Science, there were 140 questions on the study guide that we had to review and get the answers for. We did finish, and it took 9 pages to do it. He now has everything he needs to succeed on his finals. The rest is up to him. I know he will study and do his best.
