Tutoring review by Julian in Sweetwater, FL
Today the student and I met for our first session, covering the basics of statistics, such as quantitative vs qualitative data and the definitions of mean, median, mode, and standard deviation, as well as how to calculate them. We discussed how different measures of the center of a distribution differ, for example how mean and median incomes can give vastly different impressions as to the wealth of an area. His course is heavily Excel based, which he is comfortable using to manipulate data sets, but he wants to make sure he knows how to do calculations by hand for his midterm and final exams. We covered the calculation of median, mean, range, interquartile range, and standard deviation. We then looked into probability, using examples of dice and coin tosses to learn about sample spaces and probabilities. We used this to look at combined probabilities and discrete probability distributions. We looked at specific examples and how to do the calculations necessary. He has homework problems on this material he intends to do before our next session, so that we can see if he has any lingering questions on the material and to move on to the next section, continuous probability distributions. He picks up the material quickly, but is unfamiliar with reading mathematical expressions, which he will need to understand for hand calculations.
