Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by SAT Reading Tutors

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Keith in Columbus, OH
In this session, we started off by reviewing some of the sample arithmetic reasoning problems the student worked on from a PowerPoint reference she initially provided. Because she had not completed all the problems when she timed herself under test conditions and had missed a few of the problems, we both agreed to spend the session reviewing the problems missed. The biggest opportunities we both observed during the review were (1) working with fractions when solving word problems and (2) finding the most efficient way to solve a problem when there were multiple ways to go about solving them. We discussed strategies for addressing both. Afterwards, it was decided that she would rework the problem set from scratch and time herself again to see if she could apply the concepts we discussed when working the problems together and complete the questions within the allotted time.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Connor in Columbus, OH
In this week's sessions, the students completed a full length practice exam under realistic time constraints. We graded each section after it was completed. They performed above expectations on math, but they struggled somewhat on verbal and reading. This indicates that we must bias our time towards fundamental verbal skills in general. As usual, I believe that the meetings were productive due to their high level of interest in improving. For extra practice, I recommend working on vocab lists out of class.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Katie in Columbus, OH
The first student and I worked on a review of his essay. He had a good base already written, so we're going to work through editing his words into a more formal language and finishing up the final product for next time. With his reading, we worked a lot with inferences and summarizing, with which he seemed to excel. He needs a bit more practice, but he has an intermediate understanding of the topics. The second student's paper was also well written, and we worked together to finish writing the rest of the paper, which we'll work on editing and finalizing the next session. His reading focused on writing strategies, like onomatopoeia, personification, and metaphors, all of which he could recall from memory. He excelled using the 6th grade passages, so I'd say his ability is well above grade level.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Julian in Columbus, OH
The student and I continued to work on his writing. I encouraged him to first and foremost write in a direct way. He tends to attempt to artificially elevate his language in a way that works to the detriment of its readability and clarity. He is definitely progressing however. We will keep working on this.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Gaurav in Columbus, OH
The student and I discussed his strengths and weaknesses for his upcoming exam. He understands content very well and has spent most of his time studying that. I emphasized doing 50/50 content/practice for three weeks and then all practice for the last few weeks. I looked over the notes that his previous tutor left behind and went over a few practice questions with him for him to show me how well he had applied her advice. Based on that, he has made significant improvement with succinct note-taking and mostly needs to learn to read the questions for the most pertinent details.
