Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Ken in Boston, MA
The student did a full 65-minute reading section to determine his speed. He finished four of the five passages and had 35 correct and 7 incorrect. He only had five minutes for the last passage and had 3 correct and 7 incorrect. We will work to improve his speed in both reading the passage and answering questions.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Justin in Boston, MA
Today was my first session with the student. I first went over one SAT Reading passage with him. I then went over one SAT Writing section. He has the potential to do well on both sections. He was frequently able to answer the questions correctly without my guidance, although he needed help a couple of times with defining words because English is not his first language. He mentioned that timing was a challenge for him. I will focus on timing more once I see that he is comfortable with the basics. For our next session, I assigned him one SAT Reading passage and one SAT Writing passage to do on his own.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Irina in Boston, MA
We completed another paired passage and an older speech for the Critical Reading section. The student seems to have the most trouble with command of evidence questions, so for his homework, we focused on going back to the passage to find direct quotes to support each answer. His writing has improved, so we just selected the harder questions to complete, with a focus on organization and style. We derived the formula for the area of an equilateral triangle based on the side in order to solve these types of problems as well as those involving regular hexagons. We also covered changing the subject of a formula.

We completed one passage of the SAT Reading portion and started working on a paired passage. We reviewed strategies for the reading portion such as annotating based on references within the questions and previewing questions prior to reading.

SAT Reading Tutoring review by Jean in Boston, MA
We covered general test taking strategies like active reading, using process of elimination, and selecting conservative answers. Content-wise, we covered how to find the main point, purpose, and structure of the three types of SAT passages. At the end of the lesson, we reexamined the student's practice test (on which he missed 13 reading comprehension problems), and he was able to correct all of his mistakes on the first passage we went over. For homework, I'm sending him two long articles to analyze as well as reading from prep book. Also, I'd like him to complete Practice Test 1's Writing portion. He did well in the lesson, and I look forward to working with him more.
